Tiger Woods

  • Tiger is 1 shot back heading into final round at AT&T National. Seems to be getting a little mojo back. Question for the board-- do you think he will pass Nicklaus?

    Scurvydog74

  • Hope he does, but chances are going down.

I think he is still finding his game and getting it back. Still ahead of Nicklaus at his stage in his career.

If he wins today he will arguably have won the three biggest non majors this year. What he really wants is majors but he's still better than rory, Donald, etcetera more often than not.

I think he may get close, but I think he taps out at 16 or 17. Not a Tiger fan, but I respect his accomplishments. Tiger and Jack both had very little competition while they were winning the majority of their majors. For Jack in his early career it was he and Palmer, who was on the back nine of his career. Mid-Career it was Player and the two of them won pretty much everything in the late 60's to the mid 70's. Late career it was Watson.

Tiger started his career with a bunch of major winners who were getting up there in years, mid career it's was Singh, Harrington, and Lefty. Now though, he is trying to make a comeback against a whole field of guys capable of winning majors.

The other issue I see is that Tiger just isn't putting the way he used to. When he was dominant, he never missed from 10 feet in. He struggles mightily at that distance now. The majors, especially the Opens are going to be really difficult for him unless he starts making those 10 footers like he used to.

I will give you Memorial, and in the past the AT&T national, but have you even looked at this field, it is best described as mediocre. Can't explain why it went down this year, but tournaments are determined as big time or not by who plays and there are not a lot of top 50 guys in dc this weekend.
Also, the top tournaments outside of the 4 majors, are the TPC, Wells Fargo, and the Accenture Match play.

  • I don't think Tiger stays healthy enough to break the record. He is an old 36 and the roids upped his aging pace.

Memorial and Bay Hill had better fields than the PGA or British Opens will have.

Don't turn it to NBC around 5:30 then or you're going to be very disappointed.

I was reading an article the other day on msn that was comparing the competition between Nicklaus and Woods major runs. Pretty interesting, the article said Nicklaus had a lot harder foes during his heyday.

    pga tourneys?

    possibly today

    majors?

I'll admit it...I'm waffling on it

He needs to win a major to really get his mojo back

  • And didn't Jack have 3 kids before he was 25 - makes a difference. I think Tiger wins another major or two, but I don't think he passes Nicklaus.

Steve, do you actually follow golf and know who is in the top 50? Don't classify people playing well that you have never heard of as a weak field. The PGA, british, and us open all have a ton of golfer due to the ability for course pros and anybody to qualify. Barring injury, every top 50 plays in the PGA and british.
Memorial had 7 of the top,25 not show
Bay hill had 13 of the top 25 not show
AT&T national has 8 of the top 10 and 20 of the top 25 not show
The TPC had 2 of the to,25 not show

Also note, that Dustin Johnson was one that missed all of the due to injury, except this weekend.

You make it to easy to prove you wrong, bay hill, and memorial are elite tourneys but not the Next best after the majors. AT&T is about the same as the heritage this year.

No doubt Kyle4usc good post. Really hope Dustin Johnson could put it all together but always fades in the last round

They may be a complete joke but it is what we have to go by. So I am correct and you are wrong, thank you very much!

Also, I want to state that Tiger winning these tournaments is a great feat, however, he will be judged by major wins and right now, his game is not nearly complete enough for him to win a major. He had a bad round at his tournament this week, you can't have bad rounds in majors and win. Once he proves he can play all 4 rounds with some level of consistency then I don't believe he will match or surpass the record. He has about a 4 year window to make it happen, so 14 more try's or so before he moves to the area were his body won't be ale to do it. He has some knee and ankle problems and those won't go away without a lot of rest and rehab.

Why will watching the Tour de France disappoint him?
