Today was the most important win in USC football history

  • I have followed the Gamecocks since the 1950s, and this is why I make this statement:

-- USC has historically had difficulty following up sucess with more success. Even the landmark 1984 season ended with a disappointing loss to Oklahoma State. The 1987 team, arguably the Gamecocks' best until this year, was blown out by LSU in the Gator Bowl.

-- The Capital One was the most prestigious bowl in which the Gamecocks had ever played, and they won in convincing fashion over a team that had won 9 games in the regular season. The result will be that USC gets its first-ever Top 10 final ranking. (The previous best was #11 in 1987).

-- The 1984 team was heavy with seniors, meaning that 1985 was necessarily a rebuilding year. Although this team will lose some great senior players, as well as a junior or two to the NFL, the amount of returning talent is astounding by past Gamecock standards. Carolina will enter the 2012 season ranked in the Top 15, and will clearly be a serious contender for the SEC East title.

In other words, CONTINUED success, something that has always eluded the USC football program, is now within our grasp.

  • Great post Kelso. I was trying to make the same point a couple of days ago and couldn't put it as well as you just did. Thanks again to our players and coaches.

I understand what you're saying. We haven't often won our last game of the year. This victory will give us great momentum going into next year.

  • Good post. Our preseason ranking will depend some on who stays and who goes but I think may start in the top ten.

  • Way to go Kelso!! You obviously sit around some very intelligent folks in Section 13. ;)

Seriously, nice post for sure and I agree. Let's keep this thing rolling!

  • I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. It was a huge win, but if we keep this level of sustained success we'll always point back to the Alabama game last year and say, that's where it all changed, where it started.

  • It all started when the HBC told Cliff that he was one DE away from beating Auburn!

I have to disagree with you. I think it was either the UK or Ole Miss game. There were moments in the Bama game that would have broken us and opened the flood gates in the past for sure, but I think the change had already taken place and allowed us to win that game. The playmakers were in place, the role players, the attitude, coaches, conditioning.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubble gum.
