  • A little story on our fine public servants in the columbia area. I have a moped, as I am a college student and broke as hell. While I was at midlands, I got pulled over on that four lane rd that goes right by midlands( I cannot remember name). I got pulled over by an unmarked, right as I was turning left. The guy gets out and opens his wallet and shows me a drivers license. Like I said, the car was unmarked, but had lights and stuff. I asked him to show me a badge, and he opened his wallet and closed it again real fast. I told him I was going to call the cops and was leaving.
Just as I was pulling away, a springdale cop in a marked car pulled up. He first said I was speeding, then I explained that this was a moped, and the limit was 45, and It was incapable of speeding. He then said my infraction was being in the left lane, and slower traffic is to stay right. I told him I was turning left. The guy that first pulled me over was standing there, and putting in "yeah boy's" like flava flav.
The cop then called in my license plate as "M-O-P-E-D". He then told me that my license plate was not registered
I tried to tell him that all mopeds have the same 'license plate', but he wasn't listening. He had my moped towed, the tow yard was across the street no less.
I went to court, and the guy that initially pulled me over was the guy that works the front desk-not a cop. The uniform that came on the scene second lied in court and said the secretary guy did not pull me over. The judge was flabbergasted to say the least, and had to reimburse me for the tow. They also had lost my license plate and drivers license.
looking back, I should have gotten a lawyer and sued, but I was broke and busy with school and all.
Point of story, the cops in and around columbia are total morons. They are also mostly complete fat slobs, and if anyone runs, they are screwed, bc if they chase, their arteries will explode. I have no respect for these stooges.

So......whoever killed him faked the suicide so well that they stored his body for 10 days, then snuck him back into the crime scene and then went upstairs broke into his office and planted a suicide note that they made him write before they killed him since it is in his handwriting. More likely that he went to his office that Saturday, decided to end his life, wrote a note, stashed it in his desk (where he was sure that someone would look once they found his body) went to a secluded spot nearby that he knew well (since he was a smoker) and he killed himself.

That's a pretty hefty imagination you have.

I'd say it was more likely he disappeared by himself for a couple of days, came back under the cloak of darkness, put/wrote the note at his desk, then went down to the garage closet and ended his own life.

I'd be surprised if the dogs missed the scent, though that could have happened.

edit: just read the bottom half of your post. Yeah, we agree on that. After reading the first sentence, I figured the rest was just some par for the course rambling.

This is the most bizarre story. They showed the note on the news tonight. It puzzles me that a 60 year old that is very well off would kill himself because his employees let him down. I know a lot of folks on here know him and I'm truly sorry for your loss, however this is really bizarre and there's obviously more to come.

Ask yourself this question, why would a much older man hire a young woman with a very questionable financial history to handle the money for his organization and despite her history give her so little oversight that close to a million is missing?

Rachel Duncan had been charged three times previously for passing fraudulent checks, had declared bankruptcy in the past and was losing her house to foreclosure but Sponseller put her in charge of the accounts of the Hospitality Assoc.

How did you get from this story that I fled from police? A man-secretary pulled me over impersonating a cop. One of his cop buddies came up, and called in my license plate as M-O-P-E-D, and surprise, its not in the database. He then towed my moped one half a block, for said license plate not being registered. In case you are wondering, all mopeds come with a plastic tag on them that say MOPED, you cannot get a regular license plate. Anyways, no one fled from police, I was getting ready to drive off when that guy who was impersonating a police officer pulled me over and could not produce a badge or police id, but the real cop pulled up before I left.

The cop lied about the secretary guy playing cop and trying to pull someone over while taking one of the spare cars with lights on it for a donut run. Cop lied in court. Judge found in my favor, and for ten minutes thought he was on some reality show on tv, because he could not believe that a real cop would be that dumb.

I am sure not all cops are total fat slob morons, just every one I have met is. They harass young people every chance they get, as well as poor people they judge to be incapable of recourse. Most got the job to take their revenge for getting their heads shoved in toilets every day in school.

If the police truly did not thoroughly search his desk than that is inexcusable. I have no idea how in the world that is even possible

From an interview I heard today, Jefe de Policía Scott indicated since it was not a criminal investigation they had no authorization to open his locked desk and search its contents. Sort of makes you stop and Say What?

why wouldn't it be considered a criminal investigation. Wasn't the possibility of foul play considered. that doesn't make much sense

The police chief said he was dissapointed in how this investigation was handled. He said the body and note should have been found before Tuesday and that caused alot of uneccessary agony for the family. He said they need to look at a police force on how they do "bidness". The police chief admitted that his officers did not search this room in the garage nor the drawer in his desk and did not have an explanation as to why they didnt and why it took so long for them to get this closet door open. The police chief also said the only reason they went back and searched this room was because the employees of the association broke into the desk of Sponseller and found the note. Had they not done that this closet wouldnt have been searched until the smell was so bad that they would have been forced to. To do the dog search they used a free company out of Swansea instead of using the offers of other police forces (Richland County) to assist (pride issue) and could not explain why they would do this.

Come on Man...be real, this was a poorly handled high profile case and the state newspaper and other news outlets like wistv are already asking all the questions of why this handled so poorly from the police force.

You did not quote word for word. Your reading into statements. For one, it was a missing person case at that time and the police have no right to go into other companies areas for missing person cases. Period. Its the law. There was NO evidence of fowl play to assume other wise. If there was evidence of fowl play then the cpd would have reason or pc to get warrants (by law) to search. That room was also locked and had to order a master key. If you just like blaming us police officers then there is nothing I can say to change your mind.

Is the parking garage not a public place? If that is the case the CPD shouldn't need a warrant. Secondly, if they needed a warrant to go look in the closet, why didnt the Chief say that. All I heard was they had to wait for a key to be located. Why not ask permission from whomever to pick the lock? How do you explain not searching a MISSING man's desk? This was incompetence at its finest. If the CPD were held to the same standards that those of us working in the real world are, heads would be rolling all over the place.

  • I know of no details first hand only what has been reported by the media to include a couple of sound bites from Jefe Scott. I'm just an inquisitve simpleton with no desire to bash or to be critical. It is from a view of ignorance that I ask - When the instructions were to check the building - since it was not a criminal investigation - any door that was locked was therefore not subject to the search? Curiously, had his office door been locked - would that office then be off limits too.

On day one I can accept it was simply a case of a missing person but after a week would the climate not change to something more nefarious?

Lastly, it was not clear to me which came first - the discovery of the note which led them to the closet or the discovery of the body which led them to the note in the desk? Was there probably cause to enter either of those places since they were both locked and there was no evidence of a crime.

  • K...Bravesman first, I really appreciate the work you and other officers do. It is work that many would not do and I understand there are many many great officers out there and that are not thanked enough for their work...I know great work is done but the ball was dropped in a high profile case and that does not help with the perception already out there of the CPD...
and to your point of needing a search warrant to search the mans desk, I honeslty dont know but is the following incorrect then? "In a missing person investigation, police don’t need a search warrant to open a person’s desk or storage areas if the people who have legal authority over the property grant permission to police to open the areas, or if those with legal authority cooperate in opening locked areas, said Reggie Lloyd, who is a former circuit court judge, a former U.S. Attorney and a former SLED chief." and the interim head of the Hospitality association was never asked for permission...Chief Scott was also told that all areas of the garage had been searched by his investigators when in fact it had not...he was also told the search dogs were taken around the entire garage which in reality it comes out now, they had not......If they did everything they were suppose to do why is your chief opening an internal investigation and saying people may be demoted or "worse than that"?

Totally busch league police work. Pretty standard if you ask me. Any outside observer can see that. The only person on here trying to defend is a cop. What a joke. This family had to wait 10 days to find out what happened, all the while this guy was 50 feet from his car.
