Top 11 "Championship Mold" Teams (Steele)

  • While Phil Steele has all but buried us in the SEC East to this point, we did make the cut in his top 11 "Championship Mold" teams for 2012. I haven't read the whole thing, so I'm not sure how some hype teams like So Cal didn't make it.

    (Alphabetical Order)
    Bama
    FSU
    LSU
    Mich
    Mich St
    Nebraska
    Okla
    Gamecocks
    Stanford
    Texas

Southern Cal allowed 63.9% pass completion percentage last year. The highest "contender" over the past 20 years in that stat was Oklahoma State in 2010 with 62.5% allowed. (In case anyone else doesn't want to read through it all)

  • This guy is a moron. He will say one thing one minute and then the very next minute he will say something different. He will use the premise that one is based on his opinion and one is based on statistics. This is the exact reason that I NEVER read his magazine because he is so inconsistent. I can deal with someone stating something that I disagree with but when someone tries to cover both sides of the argument I don't really have a use for their publication.

I don't because it looks like the code screen from The Matrix.

I think that he throws all those in there to become "the most accurate publication." When you have 20 different polls or lists, all pulling stats in different ways, no matter how objective they are, you're likely to hit on one of them that "predicts" the season fairly well. Kind of a blind squirrel/nut kind of scenario.

What I do like about him, though, is that he does use stats and thus is comparatively objective. Every decision that he makes on any of these polls or lists can be defended through the use of stats, no matter how questionable the stats chosen may be. His reasoning on some lists may be off, but his numbers are legitimate. This kinda reminds me of what I told my preacher yesterday. He was jacked up on 5 hour energy and mountain dew and was speaking at 90 miles per hour. I told him that I had no idea what he'd said, but at least he said it fast. Sometimes Steele has no real reason for the stats he picks, but at least they're real stats. I'd still much rather read that than listen to David Pollack's opinion.

  • He is inconsistant so whatever team does go on to do great things he can look at one of his many polls and estimations to point to as to why he is a football expert and he gets things right every year.

  • Don't get me wrong. He's definitely all about covering his a$$ so he can claim to be the "most accurate" each year. Any team that has a remote shot of being a sleeper is covered in some way, then when two of 15 teams improve by 1-2 W's he can pat himself on the back. Like I said, I didn't read it yet. The one thing I do appreciate is the depth of stats.

Food for thought, and I thought it was interesting we were one of the teams.

  • Just as a reminder: Phil always picked us and showed us love when we sucked and everyone, almost to a man, lauded him as the most fair and unbiased scribe in the business. God forbid, now, he doesn't predict us as national champs now.

Just as a reminder, we play Georgia, @LSU, @Florida, and Tennessee in the month of October. As good as I hope we are, that's a DAUNTING schedule and one that is almost impossible to come out of unscathed. That's where his season predictions are coming into play.
