Top 5 QB's in the SEC next year...

  • Here is my opinion.

    1. Tyler Wilson
    2. Connor Shaw
    3. Aaron Murray
    4. James Franklin
    5. Tyler Bray

Taking into consideration all-around QB stats and who I believe will be the most effective in leading their respective team to victory. Please discuss and share your opinion as well!

  • I'd switch up Connor and Aaron. I really like Connor, but I definitely wouldn't be complaining if we had Murray on our team. Other than that, I like your list. I would make AJ McCarron my 5.5.

  • I think I'd have to AJ McCarron in over Franklin. I also think Tyler Bray is a primadonna and a headcase playing for a weak, dead man walking coach. Thats a recipe for toxic stew that could lead to Bray having not nearly the sort of year his talent suggests he should have.
Edit: hold on. Who is James Franklin? Head coach for Vandy?

  • Bray certainly belongs from a talent perspective, but I'm not sure many coaches would want him on their team.

    QB for Missouri.

    2011 stats:

    Passing Stats: 2,733 yards, 20 TD, 10 INT, 63.2%
Rushing Stats: 199 att., 839 yards, 13 TD

I think he'll be a solid QB regardless, but his production will go down in the SEC.

  • I cant remember the last time the SEC had so many great QB's in one season.

Wilson is a great QB but I'm interested to see how he does without the stable of WR's he had last year (Not to mention the rate at which they are kicking WR's off the team) and no Easy Rider on the sidelines. A healthy Knile Davis will help though.

Bray is good but having had Rogers and Hunter definitely helps his cause and he hasn't really shown that he has the mental capability to put the team on his back and lead that group of misfits in Knoxville but that team is so screwed up from the inside out its hard to judge (or blame him).

    I would rank them:

    1)Murray
    2)Wilson
    3)Shaw
    4)McCarron
    5)Franklin

Agree... Also wonder if he can survive a full season.

You would rather have Erin Murray than Connor?

Erin probably has more arm talent than Connor, but Connor's work ethic, desire, attitude, leadership abilities, etc are so far out of Erin's league it is ridiculous.

For example, the drive against Miss St that Marcus got hurt, Erin would have mentally crumbled right there. We lose that game if Erin is our QB.

This year will be very telling about Tyler Wilson. He had 3 senior badasses for receivers last year, two very good RB's, and a stout OL. He is no doubt #1 right now. After the season, I have a feeling we will all pick Connor ahead of him.

Connor just works hard and wins. Oh, and he doesn't act like an ass, or whine, or get arrested, or beat up women.

Ahhhhhh! I forgot we have new teams coming in.

  • Connor went 75% with 8TDs and 1int (not including his rushing numbers) against UF, clemson, and Nebraska, major conference opponents. I'm confident SOS will take that until Connor gives him a reason to think differently.

  • I love Connor Shaw, and I'm excited about what he can do and bring to the table. But, if you ask anyone who is not a south carolina fan about top 5 QBs in the league, my guess is he doesn't get named. Doesn't mean he's not in my top 5, but his stellar 4 game run to end the season doesn't compare to what Wilson, Murray, Franklin or even Bray (when he wasn't hurt) and McCarron did last year. At least to everyone outside of Columbia.

My guess is Connor has a great season, but I imagine at the end of the year, he'll still be behind Wilson, Murray and Franklin at least. Partially, it will be due to the kind of offense I expect we'll run, and partially b/c I think those other three quarterbacks are the cream of the crop in the league.

That being said, I hope Connor proves me wrong. He'll have no bigger fan in the stadium than me on Saturdays.

From what I read he isn't even A lock to be the starter.

  • My list based on importance to team (MVP-like):
    1 Murray
    2 Shaw
    3 Wilson
    4 Bray
    5 McCarron

    My list based on talent:
    1 Murray
    2 Wilson
    3 Bray
    4 Shaw?
    5 McCarron?

My list based on last year's performance:
    1 McCarron
    2 Wilson
    3 Murray
    4 Shaw
    5 Franklin

    Top 5 QBs NEXT year:
    1 Murray
    2 Shaw
    3 McCarron
    4 Bray
    5 Wilson

Shaw probably doesn't make any of these lists if I'm an outsider. After watching plenty of SEC games and USC games in particular, I think he belongs on all of them.

Energizer Award goes to Tyler Russell. I've never seen a guy get clobbered so many times and get right back up. Our D was all over him the entire game last year. His stats were garbage, but he gained my respect that game.

Also, I don't know how much he plays this year, but I was very impressed watching Jeff Driskel (the QB at UF). I think he'll be on these lists pretty soon.

Shaw had the second best QB rating last year. Only trailed Wilson by .1 of a point. Not sure how I just found out about this a week ago.

Agree about Murray. Also, I'd place McCarron over Bray and leave Franklin out.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

  • I'm not feeling Murray as #1 QB in the SEC. Yes, he has put up some good numbers, but he also consistently chokes vs. quality teams. I'm not even sure if he's beaten a Top 20 team yet as a starter, and that's something Shaw has already done twice. Considering the talent Murray is surrounded by, there is no excuse for that.

Anyways, if you were rank them as of now, I'd go with:
    1) Wilson
    2) Murray
    3) McCarron
    4) Shaw
    5) Franklin

However, after the season is over, I see it more like this:
    1) Wilson
    2) McCarron
    3) Shaw
    4) Murray
    5) Mettenberger

Even with Petrino gone, I still think Wilson remains the #1 QB. Both Shaw and McCarron should improve a good bit from last season and will be asked to do a little more overall. Murray will put up great numbers, but I just don't see him being the leader UGA needs to win big games. Mettenberger replaces Franklin since I don't see Franklin's shoulder standing up in SEC play, and somebody "unknown" seems to emerge every season. Mettenberger is the safe pick given the talent he will be surrounded with IMO.

I don't think Bray is a Top 5 QB. He's got a great arm, but his stats are inflated vs. weak competition and he is a locker room cancer.

I think Murray is the best QB but I wouldn't put him first until he learns to win in big games. Personally, I'd switch Murray and Shaw, and then replace Bray with the kid from Bama.
