Venables Sunday afternoon update: Still in Clemson, OU still waiting | OU Sports

CAMPUS CORNER -- Posting here a Brent Venables update I just sent in for the website. Heard bits and pieces last night about Venables being in Clemson. The

  • Probably one of the beet sources on the situation.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney wasted little time in filling the spot of defensive coordinator that was left vacant just this past Thursday when coach Kevin Steele and Clemson parted ways. Multiple sources close to the situation in Clemson have confirmed to The Clemson Insider that current Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables will be named the new Clemson defensive coordinator.

Venables has been on campus since yesterday, and is still on campus today and has been introduced to several of Clemson’s recruits over the weekend. The Clemson Insider expects an announcement from the school later in the week, when the formal process is complete.

As with any situation like this, things can remain fluid until all parties have signed the dotted line. Coach Venables would most likely head back to Oklahoma to inform folks there of his intentions to step down from that program, so one could expect a full court press from Sooner head coach Bob Stoops to try to keep Venable’s services in Norman. Sources reported just yesterday to The Clemson Insider that Coach Stoops had already offered to nearly double Coach Venables salary from a reported $440,000 per year to $750,000 per year. Sources have also told us that Clemson has tendered an offer of more than Oklahoma’s $750,000 per year offer.

1 million a year. I guess Clemson is looking to make their DC and OC the highest paid coordinators in College Football. I can't wait to tap that ass for a 4th year in a row. I can't wait. The signs for this years game are going to be nothing short of amazing with all the ammo we have.

  • Just another loudmouth. Hasn't exactly shined at Oklahoma despite a wealth of talent.

  • terry don loves writing checks. Wonder how many years of his salary td will have to pay out when they can this one.

  • I think it's pretty telling that OU brought back Mike Stoops and wouldn't come close to matching Clemson's offer for Venables. They seem to be fine with Clemson taking him off their hands.

    Thomas Sumter

  • I read it as saying OU offered 750000 same as SCUM.

Man they are spending some serious coin. That's 2 million a year between just the OC and DC, not even counting the HC. That's craziness.

    And you know it's multi
Year. Despite what some of you say, thank God for Eric Hyman. This is gonna come back to bite the tiggers.

  • Venables' defense was ranked 55th at OK last year. Clemson's was 71st. Not much improvement.

  • But if you take away SCUMs losses they are a top 5 defense! Still behind USC! FUK clempson

  • OU fan asked Haney on twitter, "Is Clemson really interested in him?". Sounds like Sooner fans are viewing this as we viewed Tyrone Nix's departure. They don't sound upset at all over this.

May bite them if he isn't a good coach, but that salary isn't bad (sure it's high, but it's where we're headed at some point - SC is just behind the curve).

The football programs make a ton of money, and they don't have player salaries to worry about. The only ones paid are coaches - thus shelling out $3-4 million on a head coach and another $4-5 mil on the assistants should be par for the course. Consider each SEC team gets $15-20m just from the conference each year, not counting what they make from home games, merchandise licensing, etc.

It's also why many are frustrated we didn't bring on a Lance Thompson - because of the perception that SC won't pay.
