USC license plate

  • Now that I'm a SC resident (all of 3 days!), eventually I'll need to trade over my plate from FLA to SC, but driving around charleston, I don't think I've seen one USC plate. Is there any reason for this? Do people not to drop the 70 bucks (every 2 years), or do people prefer the sunset (standard) plate? I'll probably get the USC plate, but didnt know what people's feedback on it.

  • I have one and see them all over the place but I do live in Columbia.

EDIT TO SAY: I don't know how anyone could stand the orange on their car from the state issues plate.

I had one until I switched to the "P" tag to be able to park downtown.

  • I want one but I think the cost is ridiculous. Just haven't talked myself into paying it! Still trying though.

I know this sounds argumentative but... An extra $23/year holds you back? A regular plate is $24, the USC plate is $70 every two years. Think of the kids you are helping with the scholarship money.

Also, do we want to have more Clemson plates than USC plates out there? We always claim to have more fans but they have just as many plates out there as we do. Plus they have Georgia plates and we don't.

"The University of South Carolina plate is $70.00 plus the registration fee. Forty dollars of the special plate fee will be sent to the specified school for scholarships. You may use Form MV-95 to apply for these plates. This plate can be purchased for cars or light trucks with an empty weight of 9,000 pounds or less and a gross vehicle weight of 11,000 pounds or less."

Go to this link and fill out form MV-95. The option to buy the USC plate is on page 3.

Had one a long time. Getting pretty grungy. Regular plates they change every few years. When I asked about a replacement they told me I had to purchase in addition to the $100 every two years. Pissed me off. I'll use this one until it rusts away.

  • What's the process for getting a Carolina plate in Georgia. I see Auburn, Fla, Bama, Clemson, Tenn, and even Kenessaw State plates every day.

    uh ohh....here goes this discussion....
You need a petition of 1000 people in the state of Ga to apply for the plate. SC has to have a much smaller number for Auburn, Uga and UNC to have a plate in SC. Last time there was a thread it made it sound like they are hundreds short.

  • You'll see them around. Come over to my office in Mt. P and drive through our parking lot and you will see one anyway. The newer ones are actually more of the correct color and you will get one of those. I have had mine for quite a few years now and it is more red than garnet. I think it will be replaced later this year finally.
