USC makes fraternities quit

I was a fraternity president back in the day and dealt with Jerry Brewer numerous times. In short, he's a pain in the ass. He's had a hard on for fraternities for years. Binge drinking is a concern, sure. But fraternities are hardly alone where excessive drinking on the average college campus is concerned. Unless you're at the Baptist Student Union on a Friday night helping to paint the gosh darndest best sign to hang at the game on a Saturday, the odds are you're drinking a beer or 12. As pledges we had to paint those damn signs that were hung around the stadium on Saturdays. We particularly hated noon kickoffs because that meant our Friday night routine was: Paint the damn sign to try and win the $100 that the saintly BSU ALWAYS won. Then drink until 1:00 am only to head out and find a bamboo pole to cut down for tomorrows tailgate. Then you had to get up around 6:00 to get that stupid sign into the stadium to hang and then go over to the Tally Ho club to set up the tailgate. Then you grab a shower, put on a shirt and tie on a 99 degree day (why???) and go to the game. Good times. The best sign we ever did was to do a pretty good drawing of Cocky with a halo and angel wings and next to it we painted "God bless the Baptist Student Union. We didn't want the $100 Anyway".

Just wondering... why the hate for BSU?

  • With all due respect, Brewer was a fraternity man himself at USC. There was once a trophy in our house deeming him champion of the "great greek beer grog"- what ever the hell that meant.

  • No hate at all for BSU. Didn't mean to imply that at all! But I will say, they always won the banner contest so we took a little shot at them that one time.
But BSU was/is a great organization.

  • As someome who has to take care of the drunk idiots, the frat leaders need to a much better job of protecting the Freshmen from themsleves and limiting the alcohol. It is ridiculus for them to get so drunk they end passing out somewhere on campus. If the frat leaders kept it on house and in moderation then they would not have this problem.

As President of my own house (and the one of which he is an alumnus), I had more than my fair share of run ins that caused me to end up in his office or in front of the director of Greek Life (swimming pool built in the house showers on the old quad, underage knucklehead pulling his car on the quad and doing drunken donuts during happy hour, violations of dry rush policy, punching a Kappa Sig for entertainment). He was a couple of notches lower on the ladder then than he is now. I always found that. if you approached him with a reasonable plan to correct what we had done, he usually gave us a chance.

Liability was a lot different animal then than it is now. Let's be honest, its liability that drives these types of decisions.

I always found him to be an annoying little worm with an agenda. On even the smallest issues, he was always puffing his chest out, making threats and trying to intimidate you because he felt that he could.
Your statement on liability I totally agree. Universities have to be very vigilant with that stuff. But he'd get worked up over stuff big and small. Just never cared for the guy.
p.s. I'm glad I wasn't the Kappa Sig you punched.

Agree, and that's why they are acting crazy. It's a CYA bigtime

What system do you suggest for limiting and moderating alcohol intake by freshman?

    LilJerySeinfeld

  • This is crazy, dirty rush has been going on for years at Carolina. Either this year is especially out of control (hard to imagine it is any worse than it has been in the past) or they are trying to crack down on Greek Life. I can't believe they shut the entire thing down, that seems a bit much.

I am also happy that a Kappa Sig got punched.

Great idea to try and keep it in house but these same people who won't allow pledges to dd disallowed mixers and parties in the fraternity houses when I was in school. So now you force kids to drive to a random location where it is impossible keeping tabs on everyone

  • Fraternities are expecting an update on the policy at 2:00 this afternoon. Hopefully some common ground can be reached and things can get back to normal.

How are frat leaders supposed to control when and where freshmen drink?

What about the ones who do it in their dorm, or 5 points, or at a house?

What about the ones who aren't in a frat at all?

Glad to hear there is a chance for a compromise. I know a lot of the fraternities depend on the money from the incoming class to make their budget for the year.
