Vandy tough place to play

  • "Win is a win" and I am pleased with the outcome. I think Vandy is probably a difficult place to go into and play with high energy. It seemed more like a High School or ACC atmosphere than an SEC game. I don't remember it being that bad in past years. They seem on a down slide and they don't have far to slide. The stadium half empty and very little energy from those that were there. I could hear the Gamecock fans over the Vandy fans many times and we did not have a lot to cheer for till late in the game. Credit the coaches and players for bringing it up a couple of notches in the second half.

I expect that you're right about the lack of energy in the stands working against visiting teams. I've read quotes from ACC coaches saying that Duke is a tough venue for the same reason.

  • They reported only about 33,000 there last night; can't be that tough to play there, just saying.

I think what they mean is that it's tough because of the lack of crowd. I was there and it's true - it's almost like a practice atmosphere. Personally I think that should mean it's much easier not tougher, but I can see where an atmosphere like that really tests your focus mentally, where you have to be sure you aren't just going thru the motions with no effort or emotion.

Unfortunately for Robbie Caldwell I think those types of crowds show what his chances are of getting the job, because it was one of the worst Vandy crowds and atmosphere i've seen - which is saying something. The stadium was maybe half full at kickoff, and there maybe were 200 students there. Student section filled up a little bit as the game went on, but it was pitiful.

  • There is absolutely no way there was 33,000 there last night. The place seats 39,000 so I would guess it was closer to 26,000-28,000. The good side to the bad crowds is we got 4 tickets on the street for $29.

You are absolutely correct. I don't care what the "atmosphere" is. if we think vandy is a tough place to play, we really have problems.
