Was the national seed lost?

South Carolina had two chances - one against LSU and another against Florida - to clinch a Top 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Is there still a chance for a national seed?

  • at least mike zunino will be on jersey shore or the minors next year. Tired of seeing his ugly mug

  • not scared to be wrong, i think we actually still get a national seed.

  • let me let you in on a secret. I don't give a rt's arse about the SEC Tournament. The big deal is Omaha. We'll definitely get an opening round home series. Past that it's al a crap shoot. We are extremely young team. AlmostMost of real our experience is wrapped up in 5 kids.
Roth, Price, Walker, Marzilli & Matthews.
The rest of our squad has vertually no experience. But here we are a definite top 10 team.
I personally thing Ray Tanner has done his best coaching job this season. He's not done yet.
Let's win a regional nd then a super-regional and see where the chips fall in Omaha.
Anyway you slice it this has been an outstanding year for USC.

    I second this.

Maybe he will take up beach volleyball, or start entering mustache competitions.

  • Hopefully having Eric Hyman on the selection committee will help.

  • Last year the Holes lost 4 of their 5 weekend series including going 1-2 in the ACC Tournament. Their Assoc AD Larry Gallo sat on the selection committee. IMO that was absolute highway robbery that a team with that poor a performance down the stretch in a weak conference should be awarded a national seed.

This season the tables have now turned. We are in the same position as the Holes were last year only we are in a lot tougher conference and with our AD on the selection committee. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

  • I think we are in but could use Oregon state and California winning another game

That could drop Oregon below us rpi wise

They will need one PAC 12 team to host but I don't see how two PAC 12 teams below us in rpi could jump us especially with Hyman on the committee

  • I think we still get one

    mpcoan

  • I'm guessing it works out for us. However, even if it doesn't, we have the kind of team that is very capable of either winning at anyone else's field or losing on ours. We just need to get hot again.

  • in other college sports a two time defending national champion would get some benefit of the doubt. i know its not football or hoops, but tradition means something.

i never thought i would live to say that

  • Maybe for the reasons Bosscock states we get one, but it's probably not deserved. Our record against the top RPI teams on our schedule is not very good, and I think that is what costs us ultimately.

  • I can't speak one way or the other to knowing if we're in, but I don't think we deserve it. We haven't performed against the top teams. Imo we needed to at least beat one of LSU Kentucky or Florida, and we didn't beat any of them.

Well if the other teams records against the top RPI teams is better them must not have a very good record against the lower rated teams.

I guess the question is does it hurt you more to lose to higher ranked teams or lower ranked teams.

My thoughts are there are not a lot of teams that are really that much better than the rest. There are a couple of locks. But even the ones consider locks have questions in my opinion. I guess it is going to come down to where each teams stands in the different areas they look at. Record against top RPI teams is part of the equation but it is just part.

I personally think right now it could go either way. But if we get one I would not say we didn't deserve it.

    It will be deserved!

  • I think another key question is if we do not get national seed, who will we be matched up against? Certainly the first hope would be the opposite team loses and then it becomes irrelevant about a national seed because we would host anyway.
The scary thing to me would be if is they go 8-9 and match us up against Stanford, remember we had to do that once before...I know I saw a stat a few years ago (not sure if it's changed since) but no team from the east has ever gone cross country and won a Super.

The answer is yes... we will be the 8th seed.

for a top 8 seeding i think you have to have a competitive record against the better teams on your schedule - be at or close to break even. our overall conference record to date is pretty darn good, but we're 5-11 vs the top half, and 14-2 against the bottom half. I just seem to recall the committee mentioning "record against top RPI teams" in the past as a turning point, for or against; as well as how you play down the stretch. neither is an asset for us right now.

There is no doubt it will come into play. And it is a concern.

But the other teams have some things going against them too.

We will just have to see. As I posted I have no idea which way it will go. It could go either way. I think Kentucky losing today helped us. If we could get Stanford to drop another I would feel better.
