Watching the 1962 US Open special

  • Jacks first major. Fans were heckling Nicholas, calling him fat and stomping their feet when he was putting. What was Nicholas' response? I wasn't paying attention, I was playing golf.

Interesting. I've always thought fans should be allowed to cheer, boo or heckle in all sports. And that sort of flies in the face of the 'golf's a gentlemens game'.

Nicklaus had a mental toughness today's players simply cannot grasp or replicate.

    agree

Guy's concentration level was off the charts

    people talk about grinding....

I've never seen anyone grind over a 4 footer like Jack. If you didn't know any better you'd think he feel asleep over it. He'd simply NOT pull it back until he visualized it going in the hole.

Best clutch putter of all time = GOAT

Even with that concentration, fans weren't hush hush and attempted to impact a putt by stomping the ground. I see no difference in this and when someone is attempting a free throw. It's said that one of the toughest things to do in all of sports is hit a baseball, and people scream and clap and attempt to distract players all the time. Golf fans should be allowed to be vocal

Arnie's Army was in full force back then and they would do anything(heckle) to distract this overweight kid from Ohio ("Fat Jack") who was threatening their "King's" success. Hell it even embarrassed Arnie who epitimizes class. It wasn't right and has no place in this particular game then, now or in the future.

(To Jack's credit he did something about the Fat Jack comments by buying a complete wardrode overall the winter of 1970, several sizes smaller. The idea was to give him the incentive to lose the weight in the offseason. He went from around 230 to a svelt 175. Guy went from Goldfinger to Robert Redford(no homo) and was now adored. But it's a shame he had to lose the weight to shed the image....his game did the talking throughout his career.)

  • Thanks for the posts. I learned a little about Jack this morning.

  • Concentration is more than putting on a game face - Tiger puts on a game face - Jack was focused at a different level.
