Well I actually went to the BB Game.......

Wasn't comparing anyone to Shaq, merely noting that just b/c you coach someone to do something properly doesn't mean they are capable of doing it. I'm sure Phil, Pat, and a myriad of other coaches taught Shaq proper technique and form, but he wasn't able physically or mentally to carry it out. Perhaps another comparison might be the constant criticism of Roy Williams' team's inability to defend the three on a consistent basis. Do you think Roy doesn't coach them how to defend properly? Or is it possible that his players don't listen or apply what he teaches? Which do you think is the more likely scenario?

"I never take advice" - Shaq on his free throw shooting. Also, like somebody else said, this is a guy who completely dominated the game at the highest level without really being able to hit shots consistently outside of 3 feet. I doubt he or his coaches were losing too much sleep over his free throw shooting.

As for Roy Williams teams inability to defend the three. lol. Apparently his players are listening and applying a lot better than ours are.

You are here...................................................................................................................................the point is over here. Nobody compared Shaq to our current players. But Shaq played his entire career as a late game liability. Teams devised a foul based defensive scheme for him he was so inept at FT's. To say he didn't "need" to shoot FT's is silly. Imagine what his numbers would have been if he could have shot 70% form the stripe? The point is that some of the greatest coaches in the history of basketball couldn't teach him to shoot FT's. Likewise, it's not Horn's fault ths team can't shoot FT's. There is much you lay at his feet. FT shooting isn't one of them.

Well, in that case. You are here...........................................................................................................OP's point is over here.

The OP never mentioned free throws in his original post. You were the one that brought FTs and Shaq up.

Easy Tiger. I misunderstood his point...and he made it clear. But we can disagree on one thing...Shaq didn't need to be a 70% FT shooter to be dominant or to help his team. Had he been a 7 and 5 guy I would think his inability to convert from the stripe would have caused a significant drop in PT for him. Of course he'd have averaged something sick for his career PPG wise had he been a more consistant FT shooter. Shaq was never able to do it. What I was trying to point out is we don't have anyone who can dominate a game like Shaq and therefore need more complete players. I agree it's not Horn's fault they can't shoot FTs. You can't make them hit those shots. You can recruit players capable of making jump shots and FTs though. It's all good. I misinterpreted.

people need to stop realize how big shaq was, how small the ball in his hands

it would be like me trying to shoot free throws with a tiny childrens edition of a roundball. it would not be that easy. and why practice that when you still could score rebound and generally scare the hell out of everybody

did you really want to keep fouling shaq? you go ahead, i aint getting that close

I was genuinely curious. That place is abnormal so like Taylor's said, I wondered if they didn't actually do halftime right there for all to see.

That is a quirky gym for sure. I'm glad you caught on that I was kidding. I really had no idea.

Wow, some of you guys really struggle with analogies. I was not comparing the talent level of our players to UNC's. My point is that Roy gets crucified by UNC fans for his team's failure to defend the three CONSISTENTLY. Did you happen to see Duke resurrected from the dead against UNC a couple of weeks ago by nailing threes down the stretch? Do you think Roy told his guys to stand back and let them have those shots? Or, is it more likely his team didn't apply his coaching? In every one of their losses this year, and many in Williams' tenure, their inability or unwillingness to defend the three has frequently been the culprit. Are they better than our guys? Well duh....But that's not the point.

Wrong again. I brought it up in relation to form and coaching which is precisely what the OP was complaining about, how our players had terrible form and it had to be a result of bad coaching.

He brought up form and coaching in regards to jump shooting and layups.

You brought up free throws and Shaq (lol) which is an apples to oranges comparison and really has nothing to do with what the OP was talking about.

I didn't bring up FT's. That is a little sidebar debate that broke out as is often the case in these threads. I really don't have too much issue with the OP. thought he made valid points based on what he saw first hand and did so in a well thought out way.

Apparently you have a huge reading comprehension problem when it comes to understanding analogies. I referenced two different situations in which excellent coaches had players who did not execute what they were taught because they either couldn't or wouldn't. Let me see if I can simplify this for you. Players are sometimes taught proper form and technique, be it jump shooting, free throw shooting, playing D, etc. Just b/c they don't apply what they are taught does not mean they were not taught or coached to do so. Ergo, the OP was implying that b/c our guys can't shoot properly they aren't being coached to do so. My point is that you don't know that to be the case, they may simply be incapable or unwilling to do what they are coached to do. Is that simple enough?

  • One more flaw with Horn that should be pointed out is the lack of defensive intensity. I don't care how bad they are at shooting there is no excuse for their lackadaisical style of defense they play. They have to be the most dunked on team in college basketball. I sometimes wonder if they actually have 5 guys playing defense they leave so many guys with wide open shots.

No, no I understand analogies. You've just presented a terrible analogy ITT. Let me break down what you've asserted:

Our shooting woes and inability to hit layups may not be a coaching issue, because Shaq is a terrible free throw shooter and he's had great coaches who surely taught him proper FT technique.

Now, think about how dumb that argument is. You are trying to imply that our players MIGHT be well coached based on the fact that SHAQ (7-1, 325lbs) can't hit FREE THROWS. Smh. AND you conveniently ignored Shaq's "I never take advice" quote btw.

If that's what you got out of my comments, your ability to comprehend is even more remedial than I initially thought. In my business we have a saying: "you can't sell stupid," meaning some people will simply never "get it" no matter how hard you may try to simplify and explain things. I'll just leave it at that. Have a nice day.

There really isn't much to "get". It's pretty much exactly what you said.

    Nice deflection though, I guess

Really?? Is that all u got now in your defense of Horn and our pathetic play? Blame it on the refs? Pathetic. Wake up! We are by far and away the worst team in the Conf and it isn't going to get better next year or anytime under Horn.

I was not trying to defend Horn. I was making a statement about the game last night. Tell you what, replace USC with any team in the SEC in that game, and Vandy still wins. No SEC team could overcome a 28 to 4 ft difference.

It's called being the aggressor. If you constantly settle for outside shots, you're not going to get a lot of fouls called your way. Pretty simple.

We didn't constantly settle for outside shots. We got the ball in the paint a lot.

It's because all we do is shoot perimeter shots and refuse to attack the basket and draw fouls.
