We're So-o-o-o close to getting a 4-team playoff

  • BCS athetic directors have been meeting in Hollywood, Fla., and reports are that the idea with the most support is to have two semifinal games on New Years at neutral sites (maybe rotating the current BSC bowl site), pitting #2 vs #3 and #1 vs #4, then play the championship game a week later.

Had that plan been in place this past season (and the seeding done according to the BCS rankings) the semis would have been Bama vs Oklahoma State, and LSU vs Stanford.

To me, that would have been perfect. The only other 1-loss teams after the conference championship games were Boise State and Houston, neither of which were legit national championship contenders.

The new plan could be adopted as early as this July and put in place for the 2014 season, when the BCS' new TV contract goes into effect.

However, ESPN's Chris Fowler (I know. booo!) is already trashing the idea as a half-measure. I guess the World Wide Leader wants to make the college football regular season into what the hoops season has become -- just a prelude to a playoff.

  • Funny that it would have ended in the same National Title Game.

  • I am opposed to the playoff idea in full. The current system isn't perfect but it does pretty much guarantee the SEC champion a spot in the national title game. If we went undefeated in the SEC I would hate the idea of having to travel to a neutral site to play an Oklahoma and then the next week travel to another neutral site to play a team like Southern Cal.

  • It is surprising to me....thought the Big 10 and Pac 12 would ban together and fight for top rated confrence champions to play. If this passes....can pretty much count on SEC dominance continuing for the forseeable future.

No doubt about that. I'm all for it though.

  • I hope they don't do some lame champions only rule. Top four BCS teams would work fine with me. It seems strange to have almost a one month break and then only a week between semfinals and finals though.

Define "prelude" when u get a chance. I believe an 8 game playoff is exactly what we need and still keep all the other bowls. I'd even have a bowl pretty much for every team out there in div 1A, but only have a top 8 team playoff.

  • 4 teams is perfect. No one outside of the top 4 has ever had a legit claim as a contender Imo. Expect more SEC vs SEC championship games.

"Prelude," as in teams locking up playoff berths before the end of the season, and thus rendering their last couple of games meaningless. Like college basketball and the NFL.
The greatest thing college football has going for it is that it has the best regular season in any sport.

I would favor an 8-team playoff if it were the champions of the six best conferences (evaluated annually on objective factors like no. of ranked teams, winning % vs out of conference opponents, strength of schedule etc) plus the two highest-ranked non conference champs.

back to automatic qualifiers (^^^^^^^^) badidea
    .
all they need for now is plus one

  • 8 Teams would be ideal! But hey, if we can get away from the BCS in general, I'll take that as a start.

Read what I said. There would be NO automatic qualifiers, Conferences would have to earn their spot every year.

  • I totally disagree with 8. Arkansas, Southern Cal, Oregon, and BSU did not earn a right to play for a championship. 4 teams removes the doubt about a real champion while preserving the importance of the regular season and conference championship games. 5-8 have no legitimate right to play for all the marbles.

ok. so voters would decide if the acc or big east deserved to be represented after the conference championship every year? then they vote on a major conference getting 3 teams (sec ly)...........buncha voting.
    .
i just had an epiphany.........i saw a commercial for 5 hour energy and thought i may develop 6 hour energy!!!!
what dbag is gonna buy 5 hour when he could get another hour for the same price!!!!!

fair enough.....you call them evaluators, i call em voters. that ^^^^wont happen anyway so for all intensive purposes it's a mute point

It's strictly math, nothing to do with voters. Not a new idea; it was discussed as a way to get rid of BCS automatic qualifiers.

So it's not a mute point, although it may be a moot point.

  • I want a playoff for sure but here are my concerns with this:

1.) There would be a possibility of an SEC championship game rematch 2 weeks after the SEC championship. Will people pay to travel to Atlanta then to a semifinal in God knows where 2 weeks later?

2.) and if they do and we win, will people travel across the country again for a championship game? It is a lot to ask of the fans.

I don't have a solution, I want a playoff but I want to be able to go! I can't afford to pay for season tickets, pay for Atlanta, pay for a bowl, then pay for another bowl.

    Just my two cents.

    carolinainsider

  • I think a lot more time needs to be given between games. It makes no sense to me to have four or five weeks to prepare for the first game, and then only a week for the national title game. Maybe if they moved the first set of games up to XMas, or even before that I would be completely behind this. I like the plus one, and have been supporting that model for years now. But they need to allow more time between games.

That's a very strong reason to not have the 8-team or 16-team playoff that so many of the sports pundits want.
