What Mike Davis commitment means

  • 1) We stick a dagger in the hearts of taters everywhere. Make no mistake about it, they wanted this kid. The arrogance of them, thinking they were getting Marshall and Gurley, when both have been leg humper locks for months.

    2) It makes yet another statement by our staff and their ability to land top kids out of GA. I cannot remember the last time we landed 3 kids from GA that had legit commitable offers from UGA. Back to back wins over UGAy, UF, and UcheaT is huge for our recruiting and it is showing.

    3) James Davis is Clemson's No. 2 All-time leading rusher. It makes a statement to recruits in our state and others. It also gives us ammunition to use in recruiting. I'm sure Mike is well aware of what happened to James at Clemson, the broken promises, and other things.

    4) Yes, we landed Lattimore, he is an elite back, but we had built in advantages, he was in-state, his sister attended USC, and Marcus was exposed to our players and built relationships with them. With Davis, it was different. He is the brother of one of sCUm's all time greats. He is from an elite out of state program. He WAS committed to our enemies, the Gayturds. But we kept recruiting. we kept in touch and it paid off.

Times they are achanging when it comes to our football program. 11 wins and we have 4 parade All-Americans in the fold and could land another in Quinshad.

  • NOt gonna get him if he doesn't visit. Doesn't matter though, I think MD just finished off an excellent class.

Still amazing to me we were able to land JDs brother.

  • I think what we are witnessing is one of the final stages of "turning the corner". The first step was locking down our borders and preventing UT, UF, and UGA from raiding our state. The next step was taking the top talent instate from Clemson (4 straight Mr. Footballs). With those two steps complete and vastly improved facilities we are now beginning to get highly rated kids from surrounding states.

The more we win and the better our facilities get the easier this will become. I look forward to 10+ wins next season coupled with raiding GA and NC. IMO NC will be the key to finalizing the process of becoming bigtime.

  • If we are able to sweep UGA, UT, FL, and Clemson again, we should reap big benefits on the recruiting trail. Recruits are young and they have short memories. They'll perceive us beating these teams as the norm.

  • Is there a particular reason a select group of people are confident we land Quinshad? I thought Tony's article recently about his plans did not sound too good for us. Not planning on OV'ing here, etc. Would like to hear someone comment on this if they are optimistic he ends up at USC on signing day. Thanks in advance

So to be clear you are still done with Spurrier and his hard headed ways and bemoan the Ward DC deal or that's all out the window now? Just trying to keep up. I know I know my handle is appropriate. Heard that already. Just help me understand.
Because, like you I love the Davis commitment. You're just a tad manic these days so I'm trying to not to get ahead of myself.

I've never been "done" with Spurrier. His offense was NOT working. What we were doing early in the season did not work. We won because of our defense. To the credit of SOS, he finally changed the offense to do what Connor could do.

Ward would not have been my choice. I'm still not convinced he should have been given the reigns. He did a nice job in the bowl game, made good adjustments, but at the same time, we got off to a very rough start. I hope he can do the job, but we don't know he can....yet. I hope he can. I would have preferred a more veteran coordinator....so shoot me.

As for recruiting, I Am elated with the Davis pickup. Our recruiting is going to a new level because we are winning, not because we have a staff chocked full of dynamic recruiters. We don't, and Robinson and Botkin have no ties to this area and have done nothing to lead me to believe they will be able to recruit the way Shane Beamer, Jay Graham and Ellis Johnson did. I hope Botkin does bring fire and energy and is hungry to get out on the recruiting trail, but that is yet to be determined.

Every coach that leaves our staff gets more money, a multi-year contract and more job security. Until Hyman gets competitive with the Bamas, Auburns, LSUs, UGAs and UF's salary wise across the board we will continue to have a revolving staff. Coach Lawing could have left last year for more money and a multi-year deal to another SEC school, but his roots are here and he wants to be at South Carolina. To most coaches, its just a job.

We have to change that. Spurrier needs to really consider recruiting when he hires a coach, but he rarely does.

I don't have to be in love with everything going on to be juiced about our recruiting or our success. I have several sources close to the program, not as many as Tony and JC, but I still am connected and I know about more of "the bad" and the good that goes on behind the scenes than many.

I am happy SOS changed to accommodate our QB's strengths, I am happy we won the bowl, got to 11 wins. I love the Joe Robinson hire, but just like JC said, unless SOS is willing to make better players available to special teams and allow more in-season practice time and emphasis, it doesn't matter who really coaches special teams, its not rocket science. We need recruiters to capitalize on the success of the past two years, and we will capitalize, maybe just not as much as if we had spent to hire Bisaccia, Lance Thompson, etc...

I am not an eternal optimist and just like many, sometimes I over react to news I don't perceive as great, but at the end of the day, we all love the Gamecocks.

  • Good post and explanation of your concerns with the coaching hires. I don't think many would have had problems if this is what had been said initially. What upset people, including me, was the sarcastic way in which you expressed your opinion of current and future coaches without even giving them a chance or knowing what they are capable of.

  • Cockfather, what do you see in store for the offense next season?? I mean, do you see SOS sticking with was successful & utilizing that part of the playbook more like he did?? What have you heard, if anything about this?? Thanks

    Trenchtown Cock

  • I have said this a couple of times, but can't remember if I have said it over here. We will be better in the long run not hiring Lance Thompson. I'm telling you he's a dick, thinks way too highly of himself and I think would have created division on the defensive staff because of his overbearing personality! Would love to have Bisaccia, but doesn't look that will happen and we will have to move on. I can also tell you that I know some folks in coaching as well and they have had nothing but good things to say about Botkin. They think he will do a great job here! Just wanted to share that.

I think SOS found his groove with Shaw in the final two games against Clemson and Nebraska. I expect we stick with the zone read/shotgun for the most part.

I think it will also be intriguing to see how SOS incorporates both Anderson and Adams into the offense. We may have our own version of Gronk and Hernandez.

This post sounds like some of mine and your phone conversations... JBK the eternal optimist and the Father of ALL Cocks letting the coach come out in him...lol You know I RESPECT YOU and YOUR opinion very much and because I know that you have sources you see things differently than the average fan. I also know that when you get on a roll venting it is easy for people to take you the wrong way. All this to say that you don't need to let people on this board get under your skin. You and I both know that NO ONE Loves the gamecocks more than either of us do but I am sure there are many who love them just as much, they just don't know the inside like we have been blessed to have access to. Those who know and respect you TRULY APPRECIATE your insight....

I actually think hiring Whammy was the best thing based on where we are at this time and the players we have and I think he will do a good job because he still has Brad and because the players Love him and want to play for him. Are there bettr DC's out there that were available? Probably but I personally don't feel like any that were a better fit at this time. And the slow start in the bowl game was just more of the same as when EJ was here. And the Botkin hire I am ok with because Whammy is comfortable with him and the guy has a fire about him that will become contagious. He will be the Shawn Elliott of the defense.... I really believe this...

And one thing I learned from talking to you and you being a former coach is that continuity is HUGE and Whammy feels that with the staff he has in place now. And as much as I liked the idea of Lance Thompson at first when I started thinking about the WAY he recruits and the WAY SOS requires them to recruit I don't think he was the guy.

As for the offense you hit the nail on the head. I believe that next year our Offense will be a juggernaut. Mangus has done an AMAZING job with Connor and Connor will only keep getting better. And watch the transformation with Connor between now and this season as Fitz helps him become bigger, stronger and even faster....

As for the special teams coach he seems to be a great one but we do have to have better players on those teams to be better....

You are my brother and we Love the Gamecocks and what makes this all so much fun is we can agree to disagree but every saturday durig the fall we know for the first time EVER in the HISTORY of this program that we have a team that has a VALID CHANCE to win NO MATTER WHO WE ARE PLAYING !!!!!!! Go Cocks !!!!!
