What is the highest a Gamecock has ever been drafted?

  • I know George was the first overall pick (and FYI one before Lawrence Taylor). Besides that I'm thinking John Abraham at #13?

I was just thinking that we're going to light up the first round next year with Alshon.

  • I hate to say it but Alshon will probably get screwed in the draft next year. Nimrod GMs, coaches and owners will take Broyles and Blackmon before him because they are stupid.

Where was John Roche drafted? Owens?

How about our two great pitchers in 1976. Someone help me with their names.

Blackmon is legit. Broyles however is a product of the system. They throw a short pass to him on almost every single play. He only had 105 more yards than Alshon, but had 43 more receptions.

  • Strange subject line. George was drafted first. Can't get higher than that.

Another trivia fact: he was the first of four Heisman winners drafted by the Saints.

    Enjoy "watching the film."

Interesting, never knew Gordon Beckhams father was quarterback here. Really wish he would have come to USC, but then again Reese was a baller.

Yes. Between Big George and Succop, we have had the whole field covered.banana

How about our two great pitchers in 1976. Someone help me with their names.

For basketball (using NBA data only during the NBA/ABA era):
Tom Riker (1st round, 8th overall, 1972) -- would be a lottery pick today
Kevin Joyce (1st round, 11th overall, 1973) -- lottery pick today
Brian Winters (1st round, 12th overall, 1974) -- lottery pick today
John Roche (1st round, 14th overall, 1971) -- lottery pick today

    Tom Owens (4th round, 58th overall, 1971) -- (would be a 2nd round today)

Alex English is the best ever NBA player coming out of South Carolina, but he was drafted "only" at the 23rd overall position. (2nd round that time, would be a first rounder today).

Looking back at those early '70 teams, I just said wow! From '71 to '74, we produced a lottery pick on draft day every year. In '71, we had Roche, Owens, Riker, Joyce on the same team. In today's term, that's three lottery pick plus a 2nd rounder on the same team! The next year, after losing Roche and Owens, we reloaded with Winters. Again three lottery picks on the same team.

    Two "OT" notes:
    (1) My all time favor team was the '70 team; with Bobby Cremins. Joyce was a better player, but Cremins was the defense guru and ultimate role player that the '71 team missed.
    (2) Joyce was the starting guard of the 1972 US Olympic team. For the younger fans, if you ever saw the replay of that famous time-had-already-run-out last play, Kevin was one of the two US players sandwiched the Russian center. Unfortunately, this time he could not out-jump the taller guy like he had done in the ACC championship game.

  • Smoak, I would think is the highest Baseball guy at #11 which was steal by the Rangers IMO, too bad they traded him to the waste land of Seattle. JBJ could maybe go higher if he has a big finish to this season, but I think he'll get dropped a few spots because he's not the tallest guy on the field (not really sure why this matters, but some of the info I've read suggested it) and he's had some odd injuries (non of which have shelved him for long). If he drops to mid 1st round he'll be a steal for someone as he really is a 5 tool guy. No one gets a better read/jump on the ball than JBJ.

  • To comment on what richcock1 said....Yea, and we got Marcus carrying the ball 30-40 times a game, so that kinda cuts into Alshon's numbers.....if only GMs could see it our way...Alshon THE BEST period.

that is a heck of a summary.

however, going back a little more, i do believe that gary gregor & skip harlicka were BOTH drafted in the first round of the nba draft back when they graduated...the year before we moved into the new building & roche and company came on.

maybe they did not keep records that far back...there were a lot fewer nba teams. neither skip or gary every amounted to anything in the pros, it might have been more frank mcguire setting them up, who knows...but i do think this did happen

Sharpe went at #7. Scott went at # 14.

From that same general area, Andrew Provence was a third rounder despite being one of the best defensive linemen we ever put out. Injuries shortened his NFL career dramatically.

Ryan Bethea could have been a first rounder if he had a brain to go with his incredible talent. But, he didn't.

For us "older" guys who remember those teams, this is GREAT info! Those years have memories for me that I will NEVER forget. I was there at the opening of the "Old Mcguire Arena" and witnessed the start of it all...John Roach hit a shot at the buzzer to be of all people...Auburn. Roach, Owens, Ribock, and Billy Walsh were all Soph's...Cremens was the only upper classman out there...great memories. I doubt that they will ever be matched. PLEASE...no rude comments about our current Coach...
