What is the worst example of a coach's son playing..

  • simms2000 said...

Ridiculous his name was brought up as in you think he would have made the team on his own at UGA, Tenn, Bama, LSU, Auburn, Florida, etc? Come on. A 5'5" receiver?

Nah, he didn't make the team because his dad was the HBC. What was I thinking?

He never played, he never embarrassed the university on the field. It's not comparable. We are talking about kid's who played.

Shane Burnham started, and was a joke. As was Cody Hawkins. Saul Smith started in front of Rondo. Can you not see the difference?

Walk-on spots are for kickers, long snappers, then it's all favors to coaches, and coaches sons.

It's a whole new ballgame when one of them starts. That is what the discussion is about.

Steve...you started the thread! Now you want to dictate someone's opinion because you apparently have a man crush on Scotty. No one has anything against Scotty. The fact that everyone loves him has nothing to do with it.

You asked who played at a level that had no business being at that level if it were not for being a coach's son. Scotty fits the bill. He was a 5'5" (generous) wide reciever in the SEC- which is a league only surpassed by the AFC and NFC.

A walk on at this level is a hell of a football player. And i think you were being a bit generous calling him a high school "star." So who did he take playing time from? Another walk on. Another third/fourth stringer.

He is precisely what you described when you decided to start the thread. He is a guy that would not have played at this level if it were not for his father being the head coach. If you can't see that, I'm sorry.

He did not "Play", you see. He did not play any meaningful snaps in a game.

We had to suffer through watching Shane Burnham play almost every snap for the better part of 4 years. He was absolutely awful. He would jump on piles after someone else made a tackle.

If you want to bring in Scott Spurrier, fine, he never played, though. We have no evidence of how bad he was, other than he was short. I don't know him, I know of him. I know none of the players had a problem with him. Regardless, there is no play we can refer to as evidence to his suckiness, you see the difference now?

  • Saul Smith is 7 years older than Rondo. They never played together, people.

Steve...he played in 13 games as a Junior and earned a letter. Put on Scholarship as a Senior. That's a pretty decent amount on PT. I would bet his senior stats are similar. Don't tell me he didn't play at all. Go back at look at how many walkon's lettered.

Why can't you just accept the fact that had he not been the son of HBC and brother of JR, he wouldn't have been in that position? Again, you started the thread and now that names are coming out-other than Shane Burnham (who, all he ever did here was bust his ass), you want to add in all of these little hurdles to your question. Did he PLAY, did he EMBARASS the university, did he...who cares? The guy got a chance that he would not have otherwise had if his father wasn't coach. That was the whole point of your thread here.

mark love was a few years after me in high school but he was a hoss. it pained me to see him play behind burnam.

He was 250 + and could hit like a truck. Absolute shame he had to play behind Shane. Disgusting. Really pisses me off.

All Shane did was bust his ass???? OMG. Yes, Simms, I was embarassed to have Shane as a MLB. Yes, he cost us several wins.
To justify his playing because he 'busted his ass' is asinine.

  • I was embarassed that we won 15 games over his final three years. I wasn't embarassed that he was our LB. Was he pretty bad, yes. If he played on this year's team, it would be embarassing. But he fit right in on those 5 win a year teams.
