What team makes the most sense to join with A&M?

  • Obviously anything that any of us say is purely speculation based on variables that we may not even know. I would think that the SEC would look first at a school that would bring fans and viewers, preferably in an untapped market. Furthermore, I think the league would prefer to bring in a team with an already mature athletic program to avoid the long period of irrelevance that we had when we joined up.

I've heard so many names thrown out there - from Oklahoma and Missouri in the midwest to South Florida, Louisville, West Virginia from the Big East, Central Florida, Memphis, and East Carolina from the random category, as well as several ACC schools.

I think an ACC school makes the most sense if there is one willing to leave that conference. I think it would be unlikely that a perennial basketball power would choose to leave the ACC, especially when it offers a better than average chance of a BCS Bowl berth due to the general weakness of the football programs. I think that would eliminate UNC, Duke, and Georgia Tech right off the bat. I think Maryland and Virginia are also basketball-first schools, and additionally are way too esteemed in the preppy sports like field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, etc. to join a conference that doesn't even discuss such sports. I know the money is good but they would be throwing away elite national status in those "Olympic sports".

I think Florida would balk at Miami or FSU and I think USC would fight against Clemson. BC and Wake Forest aren't in the equation for various reasons.

I think Virginia Tech or N.C. State make a lot of sense for a variety or reasons. Both are looked done upon by their in-state rivals as the "Tech" school. Both are football-first schools, although State certainly has a long tradition in basketball. They just haven't been any good for the last decade or more. The Research Triangle of North Carolina is a huge market if the SEC could pull N.C. State. Virginia Tech has less of a market advantage but could pull from the Va, WV, PA, DC areas.

Just curious what others think about this.

  • Maryland- they bring the DC/Baltimore markets. They have no major rivals in the conference. WVU is their biggest rival. It would be a mutually beneficial relationship.

    Simply the best.

  • I think you've summed it up nicely. Va Tech and NC State would be my choices.

  • I think the SEC has already been in touch with who ever it is. Obviously it will have to open up a TV market that is large enough and I also think this school will have an established basketball program that will generate even more money and I really think it is Missouri.

  • UNC. Payback would be a bitch

    Trooperdel

  • The short list..
Md - good tv market, no big ties with others.
WV - same as above. VA Tech won't come due to being a top conf. team, and coming in as a mid level team.
    MO - Same as MD

  • I see the market draw in Maryland but I seriously doubt they would leave a conference that they have had so much success in basketball and many other Olympic sports AND have already gone to BCS Bowls as a result of that affiliation.

Is there any indication that Maryland is interested?

  • NCS, WVA orECU.
NCS as they are more football oriented although a large portion of their fan base does not realize it. Might have a problem with the NC legislature.
ECU because of the size of their alumni base and it brings in the NC market.
West Va is a possibility because of their ties to the Pittsburgh area.

  • I would like to see someone that adds to the basketball product or at least not take away from what a lot see as being weak in the first place.

Ask KU, UF, LSU, Ala, and MSU about the WEAK B'ball produce...SEC has won the NCAA's a few times I think...weak...NO.

  • I'd like to add ECU as a slap to the north carolina ACC schools.

If not, Maryland or Mizzou sounds good.

  • Maryland NC State or Louisville.

I like Louisville but just like the Taters they don't bring a "New" market to the conference. Bottom line is what will the SEC look for, a new market to tap into, a football power to bring in more championship calliber teams, or a mid level university that has both football and basketball history to compete right away.

Hate to say it but both Clemson and Fla St bring instant competition in football/basketball and baseball, but will SC and or Fla object, Can they object and if so who would do the objecting? How many "blackballs would it take to keep them out?

I know most of the fans here don't want Clem but really I see it hurting them more than anything. They would be a 6-6 type team more often than not, especially with their current staff and Im not sure they could afford a better staff, at least not in the near future.

    Agreed

  • I predict;

UNC, UVA and MD to Big 10.

NC State, Va Tech and Oklahoma to SEC

    Big East and acc merge

ND might take one of the Big 10 spots. They should if they are smart.

Maryland has never liked being on the top end of the ACC. They are a northern school, just like they were a nothern state 150 years ago.

They will not agree to be at the edge of the SEC, note SOUTHEASTERN Conference

They would go to the Big 10 if/when asked.

  • NC State.. if for no other reason but to force the jackasses on the radio/tv/media up here to have to say that 3 letter word.

Actual call from a radio call in show a week or so ago...
Caller:"I would like to talk a little about the SEC..."
Interupted by the host "Why?" and caller was then hung up on by the host...

That is what it is like living up here..

  • Eventually it will be a 16 team league:
    13. Texas A & M
    14. Missouri
    15. Maryland
    16. Either Va. Tech or NC St.

  • I would like MD and NCSt, personally. They could be brought in with the new members from the west. Either one with TAM, and the other with a 15th school from the west, to be named later.
