I think it was 1963,,,USC and Wake Forest. Dan Reeves as QB and Wake's big gun was a runningback named Piccolo. We came back in the 2nd half to win. Reeves got hurt. My hero and my team from that day on!

I think that was the game that Piccilo scored ALL of WF's points...he did it all...running, receiving and doing all of the kicking!

My dad was at that game. He tells the story all the time. Jerry Frye (Sarge's son) was his high school football coach in Clover. He would always take 3 or 4 guys with him to Columbia to the games on Saturday and my dad got to go most of the time. They would go by Sarge's house and eat and then go to the game.

He said when Reeves got hurt Coach Frye said, "come on" and they all followed. They didn't have any idea where they were going but he walked them all down to the corner of the stadium and the guard/usher just waved and let them all by. Next thing he knew they were all in the training room with Reeves on the table, a couple of doctors, a couple of coaches, Jerry Frye, and my dad and 2 or 3 of his buddies.

  • I`d like to see if anyone can top this one-how about 11/26/53 in Charlotte against Wake Forest. Johnny Grambling was our QB. I went with an uncle and I`m sure he wanted Wake to win but for some reason I was pulling for the cocks. That`s never changed and I`ve been with them ever since-59 yrs and counting...........

I guess you don't get the gist of his post. You have to read the one above his.

Oh, I got it. Studley Hungwell had women falling all over him, right there in the stands at W-BG.

My first game was the 1962 home opener against Georgia, 6-6 tie. I was a freshman at USC.

  • 1996 against Florida. Spurrier called a play action pass from inside the ten with under 30 seconds left when they were up by 21. I hated Spurrier then... lol

    I don't think you did.

He was poking at the OP's post. Don't think he was actually making out, in the stands.

You're absolutely right. I skimmed through the original post and totally missed the subtle brilliance of mpcoan's humor.

  • Mine was against Notre Dame in 1976. Have no recollection of it, and I thought I had witnessed Joe Montana when I was an infant. Someone on this board completely ruined it for me when they told me Montana redshirted that year.

ND won, but I would not even know I went if my Dad had not told me about it.

The first one I remember was Michigan in 1985. I did not remember Mike Hold playing at all, but learned he did. All I remember is us getting the holy crap beat out of us. Seems to be a theme here.

Thank God for Spurrier. He has made our young generation have much better experiences than us. I love that man

  • 2005 Florida game. Was on my first trip to Columbia from DC. Came down for a college visit, Dad is an alumnus and wanted to get me down for a game at the Willy B after visiting schools like UMD, VT and JMU. Woke up at 8 am to get to the fairgrounds and tailgate with all his college friends. Gamecocks took it to the Gators, student section was raucous doing the gator chomp at UF as the seconds ran off the clock for a USC win. Made up my mind before I walked out of Willy B that I was going to be a Gamecock.

  • One of the games in '77. Not sure which one. My Uncle Joe Tronco took me to my first Gamecock game. He passed away last week at age 93. I had just turned 14 and had moved here from Birmingham, AL. My "team" had been Alabama. I wasn't sold on Carolina until the '84 season, lol. Can you blame me?! Thanks, Uncle Joe!

  • 1974 Carolina vs. UNC. Ron Bass runs for over 200 yards and we beat the "Un-Carolina". The next year I am a freshman, and I have been hooked ever since.

  • October 29, 1983 at home against NC State. We won 31-17 and I was 3. Story goes that my dad had tickets in the endzone and as we walked out of the portal into the stadium while Carolina was warming up my dad looked up and one of the practice field goals was coming through the uprights and he caught it with his free arm while holding me in the other. He said he was real excited and thought it would be something I would remember forever but he said I shrugged it off like it was to be expected that if you went to a football game you caught a football. I'm just happy I can say my first game was a win. We played a cool schedule that year (Georgia, LSU, FSU, SoCal, Notre Dame, though none of those except Georgia was any good that year) and went 5-6.

As an aside, I've looked online for a program from that game and can't find one. There's one out there from that year's UNC game but not that I can find from the NCSU game. Anyone have one out there that they'd be willing to part with? I'd love to get one framed. PM me if you know of one.

  • I don't remember who we played, but it would've been one of the first games we played when the West Grandstand was rebuilt in '72. My dad started getting seasons tickets then, and has been sitting in the same seats ever since, good times and bad. I don't think he's ever left a game early, even during the waning days of the Brad Scott era.
