Where were you ?

  • On September 11th.....

I was in class at FMU here in Florence and didn't get to see what had happened until a couple of hours later. I'll never forget, my political theory prof, normally a stone cold lady, in tears as she told me what happened. I remember every single vivid moment of that day.

  • I was still asleep, taking the 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift where I worked. My wife woke me up & said a plane had hit the WTC. I thought it was a Cessna like the one a couple of weeks earlier had done in Florida. But when I turned on the TV, I was glued until I had to get ready for work. Needless to say, there wasn't much work going on that day. In fact, my company had just contracted with a phone-pay service that was destroyed that day. So we couldn't even take payments over the phone for the few people who were calling in to do so. It was more than surreal.

Wealth is the product of man's capacity to think. There are no evil thoughts except one: The refusal to think.

  • Freshman at Carolina. One of the few mornings I did not turn on the TV before my 9:30 class. Got out close to 10 and saw everyone outside on their cell phones but I didn't think a thing of it. Then I saw a big crowd around a TV in the Russell House and saw what I thought was a plane hitting the building live....then I was told I was 2 hrs late. I remember every detail of that day and I will never forget. God bless all of our troops and officials.

  • Was in my bed, freshman year at Carolina. Mom called and said u need to get your ass to class, because we're going to war. Cut it on CNN right after the 2nd plane.

  • Freshman at Wofford. I worked in the mailroom that Tuesday morning before history class. I heard the coverage as I was sorting mail and couldn't believe what was going on.

  • Freshman in high school. When the first plane hit I was in math class and our teacher refused to let us turn on the TV. Went to English class and watched the rest of it live. I will never forget how I felt; i had never been shaken to the core like that and hopefully never will again. Really hard to describe those feelings, and I didn't even know anyone who had been immediately affected by the attack.

  • In bed. Girlfriend woke me up when she went to work. Saw the second plane hit live. I didn't go anywhere all day and just watched TV. I remember being kind of scared because there were rumors of car bombs at the State Dept and Capitol Building.

  • I was in the Navy and home on leave. I had been out drinking all night and barely asleep when the first plane hit; watched live as the second one hit. It was crazy because I didn't know if I should go back to Norfolk or what. I remember how angry I was.

My ship, the aircraft carier U.S.S. Theordore Roosevelt, deployed September 19th, 2001 and we spent 159 consecutive days out to sea as a result of it.

Crazy feeling. I knew that things would never be the same.

  • I was in my second year at USC and living in Captstone (hated that dump). I'd gone down to feed a parking meter, and I overheard something about a plane hitting the first tower on someone's car radio. I went back upstairs and watched until I had my first class which was canceled as soon as we walked in the door. Being in Comp Sci of course I saw plenty of middle easterners on a daily basis. They all disappeared for the rest of that week. There was like 5 people in my java classes instead of 55.

  • I had an appointment to meet with one of my grad. school professors at USC, and I was listening to WCOS as I was getting dressed. Charlie James literally stopped the music after the second plane hit and announced that America was under attack. His voice was breaking as he asked everyone to pray for our country.

When I arrived at the professor's office, she had not even heard what had happened. When I told her, she almost flippantly said, "Oh, well I need to turn the radio on." Obviously, she could not understand the magnitude of the event without having seen/heard it for herself.

I prayed for our President, our troops, our country, and especially for the families of those who lost loved ones in the cowardly attacks on innocent lives. I can only hope that some level of comfort will be felt by them now.

  • On the tarmac at LaGuardia on a Delta direct to Charleston. Had been at Standard & Poors and Moodys in meetings the day before. We took off between the 1st and 2nd strikes. Passed the towers approximately 45 seconds before the 2nd strike, watching from the window when it happened and not knowing what we were seeing at the time. Made it as far as Norfolk before we had to set down. When we landed, the pilot advised that we had been right in the area of the second jet and they had been looking for and trying to identify the jet in an effort to assist the air traffic controllers. When I got inside and talked to my wife on cell, she advised that the towers had collapsed. I could not even believe it at first.

  • In my 6th grade math class, Mrs. Powers. Always thought she was a legit teacher. I remember her turning the TV on and watching the news during class time. Couldn't believe what had happened.

Same here. They ended up letting us go home early. Our complex was viewed as a potential target.

It took me all day to get through to my family in NY. My cousin worked in one of the buildings in the WTC complex. Once I finally got ahold of him, he told me he had walked through one of the towers (can't remember which) about 45 minutes before the first plane hit.

Also talked with my ex-fiance (we were trying to work it out at the time) in Greensboro, NC. There were concerns in her area about the airport possibly being a target because the airport was a fuel depot or something like that. Went up to see her that weekend and saw firemen on one of the overpasses with an American flag. Everyone had their lights on, and blew their horns when they saw the flag.

I also remember the day we started bombing Afghanistan. I was at the NASCAR race in Charlotte (maybe a week later?). Everyone had the mini American flags on a stick. Just before the race started, the announcer came on and said: "Your attention please. Our troops have just started bombing Afghanistan." Loudest eruption I've ever heard.
