Who else wants to see Matthews in the 8 Hole?

  • He's killing us in the 5 hole.....

Would really like to see Tanner Lead off and move Pankake to 5 hole actually....

Doubt lineup is changed, there are players struggling with the stick but we are winning. If anything I would consider moving Vergason to leadoff simply because he is taking pitches, making contact and seems to be pretty confident at the plate. Then move Joey to the 5 hole.

  • Only possible change I see is Verg and Matthews swapping places.

And I agree with 03cock, Verg would be great at leadoff. Very patient at the plate with a good BB/K ratio.

  • I don't know, really. English has still been striking out a little much. Pankake started hitting again the other night, and he walks a lot more than English.

As for Matthews, I can see it either way. On the one hand, he has struggled in the CWS. We all know he left a few on base the other night, so that is that.

On the other hand, he has come up huge in some of the biggest situations this year. and against some of the best pitching. He was one of 2 guys who has hit Florida's pitchers consistently, which are obviously some of the best in the country.

He also has HUGE power. He can change the score dramatically with one swing of the bat. Probably one of two guys we have who could hit it out to dead center. I am fine with however Coach Tanner chooses to make the order.

Pankake has been hitting all CWS. Only had 2 K's, just having difficult success of something falling for him. He is a rbi guy all the way and shouldnt be hitting leadoff. Makes regular contact and drives a lot of balls to the outfield.

  • My Lineup would be Marzilli, Vergason,Walker,LB,Pankake,Whoever is DH,Matthews, Greiner and English.English batting last gives us another potential guy with speed to turn line-up over.He would be like another leadoff guy.

    fbenton08

  • I like those lineups a lot but how about go with what got us to the championship that way there is no excuse if we lose one

    2001A

  • The only one I see is the vergy Matt switch. Tanner said him self he isn't seeing the ball at all especially sliders.

  • I'd like to see Adam moved down. He's just left way too many on base. A good contact hitter in the spot would be nice. Vergy would fit. There will be a meeting with English this off season where he's told we'd like him to lead off next year but he has to stop striking out so much to stay in the line up at all. His strike outs verge on him being a liability rather than an asset. We've excelled this year despite our offense and not because of it. These things are hard because of all we've accomplished and how much we like these guys but, as Ray would say, it is what it is. Go Cocks.

English is hitting over .300, so he gets out less than all but Walker. He leads the team in multi-hit games also. He does strikeout some, and doesn't walk as much, but the BA is what it is. He is no more of a liability than anyone else.

Our team batting avg was about the same as Florida's this year. Not great, but not horrible. About the same as last year.

  • I get what you are saying, but there will be no discussion about Tanner being out of the line up. Cutting down in Ks, yes. He knows that he must.

Still, think about the last two Arky wins. We don't win without what he did at the plate to drive in runs and get on base to score runs. As bad as some of his strikeouts are, he absolutely has been key to beating Arkansas twice. As key as anyone that is not a pitcher.

  • Tanner strikes out way too much to hit leadoff. You need more than just speed to hit in that spot. He will hit leadoff eventually but he's not there as a hitter just yet. I like Pankake leading off. He has struggled some but he has hit a lot of balls on the screws right at guys and he has a better approach at the plate. I do think Vergy should move up.

I agree. Pankake is seeing the ball good. He's not swinging at bad pitches. Had a little bad luck with some hard hits not falling but they will start to fall. I like the idea of moving him to fifth and Vergason to lead off.

  • Lucas, I'm not trying to be ugly but I want Matthews to bat where the coach puts him. I believe he knows somewhat more then what you or I know. I will trust his judgement! As for the others who have posted, again I will defer to the coach. I believe Tanner knows more then any poster on this board.

No one thinks they know more than Tanner about baseball hopefully not anyway I sure don't. I don't see nothing wrong with playing what would you do? I think some take it the wrong way just because someone might make a comment on what they think should happen it's all in good fun and it helps pass time.

Lucas, I could choose to put absolutely no thought into my response and say that I trust Coach Tanner to put Matthews where he wants him. Instead, I'll say that I would switch Verg and Matthews.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

  • Been saying the same thing. I know Tanner is loyal to Mathews, but agree he has been killing us in such a key RBI position. Of course, Tanner always seems to push the right buttons. I hope it continues.

Pankake is like 3-25. Yes he has been a bit unlucky but the numbers do not lie. I think he is starting to come around though and is seeing the ball a bit better.
