Why do some non-alums raise a toast

During the alma mater? I notice this at every usc sporting event I go to. Do they not know that it's an alumni thing, or are they trying to pretend they're an alumnus?

Not that I'm an official or anything (are you?) but I think that anyone who supports the University of South Carolina can raise a toast to the school. Go Cocks!

Where is the rule that you have to be a graduate to toast the university. I am a graduate and welcome all who raise a health - graduate or not.

You can usually tell the non-alumni because they raise a toast like they are giving the spurs sign. They also are generally not as good looking and their wives are uglier.

my father was a member of the gamecock club my whole life, and we never did it when i was growing up. to me it was one of the privileges i earned with my degree.

I never have as a PC grad, but the variety of hand "signs" that people give always gives me a chuckle. My dad had me do it as a kid, & explained the meaning early on. He always said "imagine you are holding up a wine glass by the stem". Not knocking anyone who does, but I choose not to now since I'm the lone non-USC grad in my family.

I am not an alumni and I have never raised my hand to "toast" when attending a USC game, but you can bet your snooty a_ _ that I will from now on! Also, try telling my 75 year old father to cease and desist from raising his hand to toast after attending games for 40 straight years!

I prefer if only Alums did it but if a non-alum does it then it doesn't piss me off unless they're trying to act like an alum. I understand why they would want to be a USC alum though... It's only the greatest university EVER

Definition of ALUMNI
According to the Mirriam Webster online dictionary, the definition of "alumni" is:
1: a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university
2: a person who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate
That includes a lot of people. Why is it such a big deal? Maybe those who are not "alumni" should not stand either. I'm not a graduate, but am an alumni, according to the definition. I graduated from another college. Not real sure where I stand (or don't stand). I really don't think it's done out of disrespect, so don't understand the big deal. Should we go down the line and call people out for singing?
