Why do some non-alums raise a toast

  • I'm usually a live and let live type of person. I'm kind of on the fence on this. I think it's fine for the students. I raised my hand while I was in school before I graduated. As for non-graduates, but loyal fans, I will leave you with the words from my diploma and let you decide for yourselves if you should raise your hand in the toast.
"Know all men by these presents That the Board of Trustees by virtue of authority vested in it by the State of South Carolina upon recommendation of the Faculty of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences has conferred upon (my name) the degree of Bachelor of Arts together with all rights, honors, privileges, and responsibilities to that degree appertaining."
If a non-graduate wants to toast Carolina during the singing of the alma mater that's fine with me AS LONG as they sincerely believe in the final line of the stanzas...FOREVER TO THEE.

I am not an alumni and I have never raised my hand to "toast" when attending a USC game, but you can bet your snooty a_ _ that I will from now on! Also, try telling my 75 year old father to cease and desist from raising his hand to toast after attending games for 40 straight years!

Haha, if you want to pretend your an alumnus, be my guest. I was just asking in my original post why some non alums did it. I figured they just didn't know the rule, which is fine. If you know the rule and do it anyway I personally thinks its kind of pathetic.... Like others have said its a privilege that was earned by graduating from USC. Your father can buy as many tickets as he wants but it's not going to earn him a degree.

  • Well everybody was bitching about the "yellow coats" last year. Maybe security can stay busy checking alumni cards from those that raise their arms. So does the OP look around and start thinking to himself "ok that one could be an alum, no way on that one, there's a maybe"..........

    Definition of ALUMNI

According to the Mirriam Webster online dictionary, the definition of "alumni" is: 1: a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university 2: a person who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate

That includes a lot of people. Why is it such a big deal? Maybe those who are not "alumni" should not stand either. I'm not a graduate, but am an alumni, according to the definition. I graduated from another college. Not real sure where I stand (or don't stand).shrug I really don't think it's done out of disrespect, so don't understand the big deal. Should we go down the line and call people out for singing? nono

see definition of almer mater also that I posted above. its pretty clear.

however that being said, I don't give a crap who does it. personally, when I was growing up going to games and my parents did it, I left my hand down because I hadn't earned it. thats just me though. things have meanings.

um nope. its for alumni. thats why the song is called the alma mater.

al·ma ma·ter or Al·ma Ma·ter (lm mätr, älm) n. 1. The school, college, or university that one has attended.

Has attended. Doesn't mention graduation. So if you "have attended" but not graduated you can be included? Tempest in a teapot! JMO

  • My father probably doesn't even know it is for "alums" only. He does it because he is a die hard fan. I tell you what, why don't you have the university announce to the fans before each game that non-alums are not allowed to raise their hands during the playing of "your" song. We certainly don't want to damage any "grads" self esteem.

    Englandcock

  • Anyone that has called themselves an alumni is not one unless he is with a group of alumnus then they are alumni.
Ladies you are not alumni either, you are alumna.
    Alum is is a sulfate.

Wow...As an alum, I find your attitude quite sanctimonious and asinine. Were it not for the non-grads that support the Gamecock Club and buy tix to sporting events, our athletic programs would suffer tremendously. They may not be alums and have degrees from USC, but they are a part of the Gamecock family. And I, for one, am thankful that they support and celebrate our university.

I never have as a PC grad, but the variety of hand "signs" that people give always gives me a chuckle. My dad had me do it as a kid, & explained the meaning early on. He always said "imagine you are holding up a wine glass by the stem". Not knocking anyone who does, but I choose not to now since I'm the lone non-USC grad in my family.

Cocker, what year did you graduate PC? I also graduated from PC in 1990.

  • My Father considered himself an alumnus. He graduated from University High School. He did attend undergraduate school for a couple but got called to defend his country in WWII and never got made it back. He would say he spent 6 years at USC, took full course loads, never failed a course and never graduated.

What does any of that have to do with raising a toast during the alma mater?? Like I said already if your doing it because you don't know that it is for students/alum then cool... However if you are doing it even though you know what it represents, then that is stupid.. I along with others never did it until we were students, out of respect for what the alma mater stands for.... Just like I wouldn't go around wearing my class ring if I wasn't an alumnus.... It's called tradition

Does it diminish the value of your diploma to have a non-alum celebrate our university by raising a toast to it? Are you so insecure that you need to exclude others from celebrating our fine university by demonstrating your inclusion?

Uh, you serious Clark? I'm not an alumnus, but I definitely say "we" and "us" when referring to the Gamecocks. As a 27 year old Gamecock who has been a fan for my 27 years of existence, I believe I have earned that right.

I can understand raising your toast even if you didn't graduate. Did I graduate? No, I didn't. Did I want to? Absolutely. Unfortunately my family's financial situation didn't allow me to and now I have to attend college where my employer wants to pay for my school. You better believe though my heart is with the University of South Carolina no matter what my degree will say.

I don't raise my toast. I consider that a punishment to myself for not trying hard enough in the years I could of earned my way into college. That's something I will always have to live with when WE cheer OUR Gamecocks on in the WB.
