Why do some non-alums raise a toast

  • SCGamecock84 said...

Cool, go for it man. Some of you guys are taking this thing way overboard. I was asking the question why do non alums do it... I'm not mad that they do whatsoever, I just wonder if it's because they don't know it's traditionally meant for students and alumni. Some of you are acting like Im telling non alums not to participate in sporting events. The Alma Mater has to do with the school side, not the football side of things.

Why be dumb enough to ask the question in the first place??/

  • This is by far the most pretentious thread I have ever read on any site. Good job everyone.

You cant tell me you didnt know your question would turn out like this. If so then you prove that a degree doesnt mean you have common sense.

No - you're just telling the ones that raise a health during the alma mater that what they are doing is stupid. I personally don't do it but man I have to tell you - your OP and subseqnt replies in this thread are beyond haughty/pretentious.

  • This thread has certainly brought out the worst in everyone. The toast is for students and alums. If you didn't graduate from Carolina you are not an alum (someone actually said on here that they consider themselves an alum even though they didn't graduate). I don't do it even though I am a dues paying Gamecock Club member who buys seats every year and who pays a hefty USC law school loan every month because I respect it as a tradition for Carolina alums. They've earned the right to do that and I haven't. I've earned the right to wear a Citadel ring and they haven't. Some people can't respect that apparently and will even go to the lengths of calling a poster obscene names on a message board to prove it.

  • Since I am not part of "we" or "our" then I guess I have no right being a booster either!!! Hmmm where would that take the program? I don't raise my hand and I don't sing the song, but I stand .....is that ok? Yes I wish I had a degree from USC...and a degree from MIT, Harvard & Yale, but I don't. I elected to leave the Citadel and join the Marine Corps. My mom went to USC and I have never known nor loved any other team! Let the "wanna be s" be just that and get over yourself. Many of the fans don't know and have been raised doing it all their lives.

BTW I have one of the better looking wives on here and I do pretty good for myself even though I didn't go to USC. Be sure and identify yourself at the games and I will stand behind you when you correct those who aren't doing it right.....waaaayyyyyyy behind you.

why is the question so dumb?

Because you obviously assume that everyone in the stands went through the same orientation that you did and understand it was for students and alums only. How would they have acquired that info? Did you ever stop to think that they may merely be paying a courtesy? I for one welcome anyone who comes to WB to participate and feel honored that they respect the University that much. Thats why the question seems somewhat out of place to me. It doesn't seem well thought out.

If that's the case then don't do it at football games if we all can't participate.

Haha, if you want to pretend your an alumnus, be my guest. I was just asking in my original post why some non alums did it. I figured they just didn't know the rule, which is fine. If you know the rule and do it anyway I personally thinks its kind of pathetic.... Like others have said its a privilege that was earned by graduating from USC. Your father can buy as many tickets as he wants but it's not going to earn him a degree.

Wrong. Pathetic is the original post in this thread. You sound like a real pretentious ass. I hope you don't plan on procreating.

  • I'm a graduate, and could care less who does it. I think anybody who supports the school and its athletic programs should do it. I do however, wish everyone would do it properly.

  • That's fairly elitist...if they are fans, drive to the games, and cheer for the Cocks, why should they
be excluded ? This is not India...a caste system....divisive at best...

During the alma mater? I notice this at every usc sporting event I go to. Do they not know that it's an alumni thing, or are they trying to pretend they're an alumnus?

I have never raised a glass even if half my family graduated from USC. I graduated from Lander but always been a Carolina fan. Just my opinion. Just curious if you go around and ask if people are alumni. This is a great discussion to help divide a fan base.
