Why is there no 10-second rule in WBB?

  • Seems pretty dumb to me. There's a shot clock, but you can dribble the ball around on the other end for as long as you want?? Doesn't make sense. Somebody help me out.

  • The trade off is the shorter shot clock.

I like the shorter shot clock, but I wouldn't like having no 10-second rule.

You have 30 seconds to get it up, and get a shot off. The thought is that females, for the most part, do not run as fast, and can't get it across as fast as men. Understandable. If you dribble around under your own basket for 30 seconds, you just turn it over on your own side.

I see what you're saying but I don't that as the rationale. If high school girls can get the ball across the half-court line in less than 10 seconds, then the elite players in D-1 basketball shouldn't have any trouble doing so. That seems like a little bit of a slap in the face of these girls. However, the UConn coach is advocating lowering the rims to a more reasonable level comparable to the average heights on women rather than the 10 foot goals for men. He says that the volleyball net is lower for women, which I never knew, and it makes women's volleyball every bit as exciting as men's volleyball. I'd love to see it moved down to 9 feet 5 inches or so, as he suggests. That would allow more women to play at or above the rim.
