Why would someone tell someone they aren't a true fan?

Somebody told me yesterday that I couldn't possibly be a true fan of USC because I didn't graduate from there.
I told him I don't give a health during the alma mater, and I respected that only alumni should be doing that.
Then we started talking recruiting, and he had no idea who Connor Mitch was. I told him thank you and stfu.

I think some (not all) alumni might feel a certain connection to the university that fans who didn't attend USC generally wouldn't have. But that doesn't make an alum a "better" fan. Alumni status has no correllation with how how rabidly one follows the various USC sports teams. Sounds like he is just showing his ignorance.

These threads typically take on a life of their own. You have included a fandom argument between alumni vs. non-alumni and sprinkled it with non-alum's extending a toast at the end of alma mater. Bravo. Should be an interesting read.

As an alum, I have no problem with non-alums raising a toast at the end of the alma mater. I see it as a way of showing support for the university and the team. Spurrier does it with the team after the game. He isn't an alum.

You are a fan. Don't worry about it. I am a Grad who lives and dies Carolina sports but i have several Buddies who aren't grads who put me to shame.
One is a Ga Tech alum. My Wife is a North Carolina grad who is a much better fan than me. Gotta educate them.

I, too, do not go to USC. HOPE scholarship is a beautiful thing.
That being said, I bet I know more about the school and athletics than 75% of the students at the school.
The real USC is the one that didn't finish in the top 25. The real Carolina is Academic Fraud U. South Carolina back to back Top 10. Got it.

I went to Miller -Motte they dont have an athletics department at the moment so I chose to be a Gamecock fan. Is that cool? Can I pull for the Gamecocks? Of course i won't raise my hand and toast during the alma mater safety first

If you went to Miller-Motte you still can't be a fan of the Gamecocks. The president of that college recently started an online athletics department so you have to pull them in their fantasy league. I think they open up the season with The University of Phoenix.
