Wide Receiver

  • Probably unpopular but here is my humble opinion:

    1) quantity over quality. The numbers are there but I'm not sure this is an overly talented group. TM top three WR are Ace, DL, and Smith. Ace is a good receiver. But at 5'7 he will be limited. DL can block. Smith hasn't shown he can produce in games.

    2) Speed. Byrd is the word. Can he catch? Ace is more quick than fast. The rest aren't burners by any stretch. Need speeds.

    3) Coaching. The biggest issue IMHO. Jr has been blessed with some individually extraordinary guys. Rice, KM, and AJ. I'm sure he has helped in their progress. I think it is glaring though the lack of progress the WR unit, as a whole, has shown. Look at Lawings crew from day one and the growth and transformation to graduation. Now look at Jrs crew. Night and day. Our WR, even the best like AJ, show difficulty in technique. The inability to create seperation. Watch our games last year. You can gave all day to throw. Guys have to get open.

WR is a huge question mark. On paper it seems we have talent. The jury is still out if they will be put in position to be successful.

    DV away. :)

  • There has always been a debate when it comes to WR coaching. I believe the discussion is good.

  • D. Smith is one of the fastest players on the team. He just needs to show up in game situations

  • On the money with all of this.

We need Shaq healthy and ready to contribute.

  • I couldn't say either way simply because I have not seen enough of any them other than Ace and DL. I will say up until last year, I never remember DL dropping a ball and he made a few really nice tough catches. After his drop early last year, he seemed to get in the proverbial dog house. He's faster than I thought and I think he could have a nice year. Not 50 cateches but a solid year. I feel like Brent, Shaq or jeffrey will emerge, but I really don't have much to go on.

And that debate usually consists of good WRs are good because they're good, bad/average WRs are bad/average because of coaching.

I think it's more that most players don't progress much while here, whether good or bad.

Huge difference from what Lawing does.

  • First and foremost I would caution our fans against being overly critical of JR. There isn't going to be a change there, and it may enter into the equation when SOS decides how long he'll coach. We have a bad habit of eating our own.

Secondly, when you compare the development of our receivers to CU and UGA I think it is pretty clear that we are doing better. I'm obviously taking recruiting into consideration. I also think the position is developing better than it has under previous WR coaches.

I do share your concerns that we may lack that bigtime playmaker this season.

I dont think thats a fair assessment considering so much if based upon qb play. What would Alshons numbers have been last year if Garcia played better? Fact is both KM and Gurly play/played in the nfl even though neither arrived as true wideouts. Thats progression.

  • You cannot compare development in a defensive line and a wide reciever corps. Completely different animal.

With our run game now a focal point, you aren't going to see multiple guys with 8-9 catches and 120 yards. Just not. I do think you will see a lot more 4-6 catch games across the board, especially with tight end drags opening things up.

Also you have to take into account Connor getting confortable.

I like Jr as a wide reciever coach. Just because you don't see development doesn't mean there isn't any or won't be.

  • On offense, I think we will play to the strength of our team this year, which is at running back. Coach Spurrier is a smart guy. The Nebraska game was frustrating at times with receiver play, but not all is lost. Smith got open, but he just dropped the ball. He needs to get confidence with a good first couple of games this year. Unfortunately, Shaq's shoulder will present a durability concern this year. But if we can get a stellar half season out of him (for a freshman), I'm happy. I look for a lot of tight end routes and running back routes this year. Then hit Byrd with a long ball every now and then to keep the D honest. Even his clear routes will be effective if he can catch one or two early in the year.

No, we don't have a proven stud coming into the year but we can still win.

You left a big name off of here... Eillington has a chance to be a big play maker this year in the passing game. He made a few last year and should figure into many more big catches this year.

Shaq, Jeffery, Ellington, ACE, Buster and Byrd... out of these kids, we should be able to get 3 playrs to step up and make enough plays to give us a chance to win 9 or 10 games.

I agree some questions have to be answered. Ace is gonna catch a lot of balls this year IMO

To call out WR coaching is a little crazy to me . The player KM arrived as and the player he left being is amazing . His footwork was perfect at times . He didn't dream that up

    .

That quote is certainly true. Lawing is great, but D line is ALL about developement with a few noted exceptions at end. I don't know much about Jr's coaching, but I do find it illogical that posters claim he bascially just had to get out of the way for the good ones and hasn't coach up the others - no credit all the blame?

  • Shaq Roland is listed on the ESPN SEC blog as a newcomer to watch. I agree with this. If he picks up the offense quickly, he could make some waves.

  • Rory Anderson may line up at TE, but he's made 3 TD's with only 8 receptions, as Mr. Whittle graciously pointed
out in a recent article. He looks like an excellent possession receiver at worst, and a star at best....

Additionally, look at the DL recruiting. Matthews, Robertson, Clowney, and Quarles were all top 100 recruits with Sutton, Ajiboye, Ingram, Geathets, and Dukes being top 250. That's serious talent.

  • Well I have to admit that the offensive has been the biggest disappointment in the Spurrier era followed by quarterbacks then receivers. The offensive line has contributed greatly to our quarterback play. I still say our best offensive line play and quarterback play was Blake Mitchell's senior season especially the last 6 games of that year.

    GamecockWorld

  • We will be fine at WR. Ace will probably catch 40 or so...then there will be a lot of guys catching 10-20 passes each. The lonpass play we be more prevalent(see last years Nebraska, Clemson games). And some are posting we may get to 9, possibly 10 wins? That would be very disappointing...I think we will better this year than last, personally.
