Wildcock? Why run it?

  • Watching Shaw running the ball to me is basically the same thing as running the wildcock. Wildcock is brought in to change up what the QB does. Shaw does this.

  • Only thing I could offer would be that it would probably be better to have another player more capable and stronger absorbing the hard licks that could happen on a designed delay between the tackles.

  • I think it just gives us a change of pace. Bruce is quicker and more elusive plus takes some hits off of Connor. I actually wish we ran it a little more.

I agree .....unless you have players like Arkansas had a few years back with Felix Jones and Darren McFadden and you run the hand off /keep with them ....why do it ? Shaw can do that and pass off the formation. All it says to me is .....we are running the ball with a token chance of pass.
Next year if they want to run it with Marcus,Brandon and Shon on the end around fake then OK lets do it . But then that would be the old single wing ,right ?

  • It doesn't seem that we've had a lot of sucess with it this season. I think it is a fading fad among college teams. JMO

  • At Flowery Branch Connor was an all-state wide receiver his sophomore season, with more than 1,200 receiving yards and 15 TDs - Might be exciting to see Ellington connect with Shaw for a TD Saturday night.

  • Not sure. It hasn't been especially effective.

13 attempts over 100 yards (can't remember what I just looked up-I'm gonna be toast at 60 yrs old-type_angry) 7.8 yards per carry and 1 touchdown. Not too bad. We need to use it more IMO.

Most of it on one play in garbage time against Kentucky. Otherwise very pedestrian.

  • you run it as a change of pace. since, in our offense, its not really a change of pace i dont see much good coming from it.

now, if we throw back to connor shaw on the play & he tosses it downfield out of the formation, that would be a wrinkle. not a change of pace

i fully expect something out of the ordinary from sos. the wildcock or cat will not suffice. or will the genius finally forego gimmicks & just run run run run take a down or two

If Lattimore ran for 204 yards on 26 carries and broke 2 for long td runs, would you say the same?

Ellington has the speed to break the long runs. Give him enough carries throughout the season in the wildcat and see if he can add that change of pace that we need. I think between him/wilds/shaw, that's 3 capable options running the ball to win our next 2 games. In my opinion I don't think Shaw and Wilds can do it all alone. Gotta have a change of pace. Hell I don't care if it sweeps to Byrd. We don't have a dominant enough of an o-line to expect to dominate a very good team we'll face in the bowl game if we handle business against Clemson.

Not really the same thing, IMO.

By running wildcat you give up the prospect of having a reasonably effective passer.

Lattimore/wilds are better rbs than Bruce. Shaw may be a better runner out of scramble and zone/read than Bruce based on what the defense will be looking for,

I don't see the point. Ellington is not a mind blowingly explosive player that demands to be featured. He is a good sec player probably in the future, though.

The difference is it is usually a run play where the RB gets the direct snap. However because the QB is in the formation they don't pull a DB for another LB. And yes, it does help if the QB is a receiving threat but not required.

  • I just don't think spread teams with dual threat qbs usually run a lot of wildcat, it is forfeiting an advantage the team has consciously assembled: the defense having to prepare for run or pass.

If you got an elite player you want to get a touch, perhaps, but nothing about his season suggests he is that level a player. Looks like a good sec player, not a huge difference maker.

His returns have been below the sec average, he has less than 300 yds rushing and receiving combined and 27 yds passing.

I think he is good and will get better if he focuses on football.

    VBCock

  • I'd like to see us utilize more of the wildcat-style misdirection off the sweep in other shotgun/pistol formations, but with Shaw getting the snap. Spurrier has run a sweep followed by a fake sweep (or vice versa) a few times before (trying to recall the specific game). I'd love to see Byrd or Sanders come across the middle to create confusion.

Then again, I'd be happy to see us run it for 250/300 yards off read options and I-form plays Saturday. Whatever works for the win!

    gamecockpete

  • We torched the taters with the wildcat two years ago. They sell out to stop the run and lob it over their heads. Would heart to see that again.

I hear those touchdowns only count as four points.

It is the same thing. 204 yards on 26 snaps is a fantastic ypp for a formation that is almost entirely runs.

Really? A rb iin a conventional system is exactly the same thing as the wildcat. Didn't know that.
