Would you trade?

  • Jeff Scott for Spurrier Jr?

Scott used to get ripped by both Clemson and South Carolina fans. When he got the WR coaching job (Promoted from GA) our WR's were horrendous. He has taken our probably most untalented position and made it our most talented. A lot like BL as done with yalls DL.

I still don't think WR coaches do much actual "coaching"....and I'm not sure if Hopkins/Brown improving are due to them being the 3rd/4th options last season vs 1st or 2nd a few years before or Scott's development of them.

Regardless....Jeff Scott has more than proven himself IMO...hard worker, better recruiter than I ever dreamed of....hope he's learning everything he can from Chad Morris.

I'd trade Caldwell for Shawn Elliott.
I'd trade Harbinson for Lorenzo Ward I think as well.
I'd trade Dabo for JC Shurburt
I'd trade Batson for Steve Miller

  • I wouldn't trade him. So I'm not sounding as if I'm saying that strictly as a blindly loyal USC fan, I say that because as you mention, I agree that I don't think WR coaches actually do as much "coaching" as other positions. Great athletes actually need very little coaching. I honestly believe the best we've had and Clemson has had are/were going to be great if a fire hydrant with "WR Coach" painted on it was standing on the sidelines.

If part of luring Coach Spurrier to USC meant allowing him to have Steve Jr. on his staff, then Jr. as our WR coach wins this debate, hands down, with the above opinion not even counting into the equation.

  • You mean the guy that coaches the WR's that had 11 receptions for 83 yards against us? No, I don't want that loser. As it relates to pure coaching ability I wouldn't trade a single one of your coaches for a single one of ours.

Why don't you ask the coaches at Byrnes about Jeff Scott's hard work and great recruiting....

Jeff Scott is a good recruiter but not a great recruiter. Not sure I'd trade Junior for Jeff Scott. Now, if you offer Aubrey Hill or Trooper Taylor...

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

I bet Iowa State wouldn't trade players/coaches with Oklahoma State either....since they beat them to death and everything.

No way Auburn would trade Chizik for Spurrier...
And the last thing a Utah Ute fan would do is trade Kyle Whittingham for Saban.

  • I'd say Spurrier Jr has done MUCH more than Jeff Scott as a WR coach.
I'd say as a recruiting coordinator, Scott is somewhat better than Spurrier Jr. But by a very small margin. Recruiting classes prove they are fairly equal. Slight edge to the Gamecocks.
So, would I trade them...no way.

Dabo and Scott seem to make a good recruiting team. But I can honestly say that there isn't one coach on your staff that I'd trade with.
Heck, I'd say that about everyone from the AD to the women's Cross country coach.

I'd consider trading for Dan Brooks.

Your examples have no contextual relationship to your question. In the last three years when your superstar WR's have played against USC they looked poorly coached and overwhelmed.. Scott is known as a recruiter who has never read the rule book or heard of a dead period. What you are looking for is validation for Jeff Scott as a coach. I think he is a sh*t coach and worse person.

    Really?

    Who has he recruited?

As far as coaching, he has done nothing up there, to develop anyone worthy to make him invaluable as a position coach.

    Cockbert

  • Scott's coaching consists of a single year with Watkins and a WR core that's underperformed compared to their recruiting rankings. Bubba has coached Clayton, Rice, McKinley, and Jeffrey. I'll take Bubba. I also assure y'all that quite a bit goes into coaching wideouts.

You're probably right. I suppose Lawing has signed his share of good players over the years.
