Would you trade 81 Football for 2010/11 Baseball?

  • Clemtech fan posed this question to me. Would you rather have a 1981 football national championship or the past 2 baseball championships. I said without a doubt and without hesitation the baseball. His argument baseball is a minor sport to most in the country but football was what everyone wanted.
My point is I was 9 years old when Clemtech won that. My only reallocation of “that season” was growing up as a child and seeing those coke bottles everywhere. As an adult I sure can take pride and solace in the baseball championships. They he throw out the decade of cheating yada yada what they all talk about their “great” past. The way I see it is. Yes your( Clemtech) grandpa & daddy could beat up my daddy( USC) but my daddy gave me boxing lessons so when today roles around we are pounding you’re a$$ into submission in every sport we step between the lines.
I digress, but the primes of the question is I’ve tried to look at it without Garnet glasses and still I would not take a bought and paid for championship 31 years ago for what we have had the last 3 years. Maybe I’m missing something so I thought I would pose the question to the board.

  • I love winning in baseball, but I'd rather have one in football than 5 straight in baseball.

  • For me, i take baseball only because I was 2 in 1981 and wouldn't remember it anyway. All things being equal I'd rather have one in football than 2 in baseball, but, that said, that is clemsin's problem isn't it? The football title is no longer relevant it was so long ago.

  • I would take a Football National championship over two in Baseball. However, I will take 2 "clean" Baseball championships over a tainted football championship.

  • I'll take our two legitimate baseball championships over their one illegitimate football championship any day.

  • Like I posted in this thread, let them continue to live in the past. 1981 was a wonderful time, the music was on tape, the movies were in standard definition, the computers were lightning fast with those state of the art 356 processors and when you needed to find something you looked in the outdated encyclopedias. Who doesn’t want to go back there?

Truth is that no one wants to hear the overweight balding person who cheated and for a split second once had it all; they want to hear the stories from the attractive person who pulled himself up by his bootstraps and now is on the cusp of having it all and earning it the right way. That is why CU has such disdain for us today.

We are not Clemson and I for one don’t ever want to become them. Let’s let them party like it’s 1981.

Not even close, Football is the supreme championship PERIOD. I don't care if we won 10 baseball championships in a row, I want that 1 football title.

  • I'm with you. I was 6 in 1981 and had no football allegiance whatsoever so even if it was USC that won it, I still wouldn't have any experience of it and it would mean very little to me.

If both were current, I would take a football championship over 2 baseball titles, but I would not take a 30+ year in-the-history-books football title over the actual experience of watching my alma mater win back-to-back baseball national championships.

  • This is 2012, right? The past is great, but you have nothing to sell except for some pieces of paper and a trophy. Along with some tarnished coaches.

If it were a 2005, or even a 1998 championship, I would take it, but we do live in the present. Our 3 straight beat downs are more important than their distant memories.

  • I will take my two back to back baseball now and get my football in the very near future than to live off of a championship from 30 years ago.

  • I wouldn't trade those two baseball titles for anything.

  • Tell him they do not have an NCAA Championship, they have an Associated Press Championship.

The NCAA has not awarded championships in Division 1 football.

  • I would take a football championship won today over the 2 baseball titles but a championship that was won the year I was born isn't relevant to me nor did it solidify them as any sort of power. I wouldn't trade our 2 baseball for minnesotas 6 football championships or whatever they claim bc the fact is they are no longer relevant. Ill take where we are now bc the excitement and joy I get from being a fan now, with all the first we are experiencing is unrivaled by any past glory of clemson.

  • Agree with joetheogre. I'd rather have 1 football championship than 5 baseball championships. Heck, I'd rather have a basketball championship than 5 baseball championships.

  • Hard to beat back-to-back championships!! That's something special!!

    billyjimjeffbob

  • Not today. I would rather have a current football championship. But I will take a current baseall championship over a 31 year old football championship. And back to back is a lot different than 1.

  • Having attended all the Baseball home games, the SEC tourney, and the CWS in Omaha the last two years...I wouldn't trade those two years for an undefeated season and National Championship in Football.
Baseball has more games and a more intimate environment at the stadium. You become part of the team experience for 4 months of the year. Omaha is a venue and I'll never forget the look on my wife's face when we won that first CWS. It was a teary look of wonder and disbelief that will never be duplicated!
I love football and have had season tickets for 30 years but I would never trade that first CWS win for one in football.
    Can't I just have both???lol

  • I can see how someone could downplay the accomplishments of winning 2 Nat. titles in a row in baseball because they probably aren't big baseball fans to begin with. But if you had any idea how hard it was to win 1 baseball title, let alone 2 in a row, I think you'd change your tune. Not many schools can say they've done what we have. I like that fact.

Here is my question. They won / bought that SHIP 31 years ago.

Most of those posters on TIGNET are 20 and don't even go to Clemson.

Good rebuttal would be first, how old is the poster, and second if he wasn't born to STFU.
