Two grand boys, Two state championships. 3-peat USC

  • Didn't think twice about the rant. 63-17 was the low point in the rivalry, IMO.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

  • Dabo didn't do it to motivate his team; he did it to save his job. After getting throttled 3 times in a row by us, he knew he would be on the hot seat if they didn't beat Va Tech (and the way clemson played against NCSU and us, that didn't look likely). It just happened that Va Tech was pretty terrible last year (I don't think they beat a ranked team all year) and for some reason decided to not let their mobile QB run when we showed them that a running QB will tear that defense up. Dabo needed the fan support behind him so he wouldn't get fired. The best way to do that at clemson is attack USC. He couldn't attack the results, so he attacked the university; and he couldn't wait until after Va Tech because then it is too far removed from the underlying event. It wasn't about motivation, it was about saving his job, and he decided that giving his recruiting pitch to the clemson faithful was worth a shot because it worked with all the football players he had on campus.

Spot on. That kind of rant coming from a head coach made the Clemson program look like a bunch of whiners, very non-professional. On top of that, it certainly didn't sound like something you'd hear from someone professing to be a Christian.

I still tend to blame the 2004 "fight" on circumstances that could have been avoided with proper rules in place. As you recall, the week leading in to the game, there were rumors that clemson players had targeted Syvelle Newton for injury. So, some of our players went to the hill endzone as clemson ran down it to taunt them. Obviously, they should not have done that...but at the time, it was within the rules. But that created some early shoving. Of course, we paid dearly for that as on the opening kickoff, Cory Boyd got his bell rung, fumble, led to quick points for the tigers. Anyway, the refs lost control of that game early. The actual fight was started when two clemson players kicked Newton in the helmet after the end of a play with players coming on and off the field for a punt. It was a perfect storm for a brawl.

Fast forward to this past season. Days after the Gamecocks handed the tigers a thumping on the field...and the week leading in to the tigers championship game in the acc. aBo sWinney went on a stagged rant that he said was triggered by a Steve Spurrier tweet. It was very quickly brought to his attention that Steve Spurrier doesn't even have a twitter account. That it was Todd Ellis who made the tweet. Still to this day, the coward has not apologized for the childish rant.

My opinion on this is obviously biased. But I think that rant was just as low a point in this rivalry as the fight in 2004. There is no place for that kind of behavior from a man that is supposed to be the face of your program. A man that outwardly uses his faith to gain positions of advantage. As for me, it has caused my hatred for the clemson football program to reach an all-time high. And I have zero respect for the man who "leads" that program. ZERO

He wasn't kicked in the helmet. A Clemson player shoved his head into the ground after a tackle, as I recall. A USC player shoved the Clemson guy and it went from there.

I think dabo's rant was funny. That's the funniest thing I've seen a coach do ever and every Clemson fan I know privately will admit it was ridiculous. Made him look like a fool.

  • The last 2 years, the score of the Clemson game has not been indicative as to how one sided they actually were. We very easily could have scored a few more in both games, but Spurrier laid off the gas. I always got the impression that it was because he sort of liked Dabo.

Remember what happened to UK after Joker Phillips ran his mouth after they beat us in 2010? Dylan Thompson was scoring touchdowns with 2 seconds left on the clock and Spurrier was calling flea flickers up 36 in the 4th quarter. Connor Shaw won't be taking a knee at the end of the Clemson game this year. It'll be Thompson or McEvoy throwing passes.

  • The rant was sad all it did was provide extra motivation for USC next year. Dabo just got his ass handed to him a 3rd year in a row. None of those games were even close. Dabo doing the rant turned himself into Ray Goff. How did that turn out for old ray? But none the less I am a huge dabo fan. The longer that ass clown is at Clemson the better it is for USC. I wanted Clemson to win enough games last year to get that ass clown an extension and guess what we have him for 5 more years. It says something about a head coach that both his fans and the rival fans want him at Clemson for a long time.
