I still tend to blame the 2004 "fight" on circumstances that could have been avoided with proper rules in place. As you recall, the week leading in to the game, there were rumors that clemson players had targeted Syvelle Newton for injury. So, some of our players went to the hill endzone as clemson ran down it to taunt them. Obviously, they should not have done that...but at the time, it was within the rules. But that created some early shoving. Of course, we paid dearly for that as on the opening kickoff, Cory Boyd got his bell rung, fumble, led to quick points for the tigers. Anyway, the refs lost control of that game early. The actual fight was started when two clemson players kicked Newton in the helmet after the end of a play with players coming on and off the field for a punt. It was a perfect storm for a brawl.
Fast forward to this past season. Days after the Gamecocks handed the tigers a thumping on the field...and the week leading in to the tigers championship game in the acc. aBo sWinney went on a stagged rant that he said was triggered by a Steve Spurrier tweet. It was very quickly brought to his attention that Steve Spurrier doesn't even have a twitter account. That it was Todd Ellis who made the tweet. Still to this day, the coward has not apologized for the childish rant.
My opinion on this is obviously biased. But I think that rant was just as low a point in this rivalry as the fight in 2004. There is no place for that kind of behavior from a man that is supposed to be the face of your program. A man that outwardly uses his faith to gain positions of advantage. As for me, it has caused my hatred for the clemson football program to reach an all-time high. And I have zero respect for the man who "leads" that program. ZERO
