conference changing members

  • i am part of a company that does consultation work for conferences and universitys. it is about to get crazy with some conferences like the big 12 starting to look for new members. they have to get two new members quickly because you cant have a conference championship without 12 members. i dont exactly know which conference they will raid, but it will probably start a snowball effect. this is where the taters think they may be invited. my believe is that we will see 16 team mega conferences. if you dont win your conference championship you will not go the playoffs. there will only be 5 or 6 conferences, which would give you the teams for the playoffs. this will be the ultimate down the road plan, with 2 or 4 team format next year. i have heard that there is discussion of all other teams not in the mega conferences forming like a divison 2 or something and having their playoffs. we are not that far off as the sec and acc have 14 already, and the others will have to follow. notre dame will probably move to the big 10 when they realize, along with nbc that if they dont they cant be relative or win or be in the playoffs. the problem they face is whether the big east will become a bcs member conference. going to be interesting as teams start to make their moves. this is going to be crazy and change the college landscape as we now know it. stay tuned.

  • I hope things have settled for the time being. The only scenario I can see is, as you mentioned, the Big 12 adding two to get to get to 12.

I don't see the SEC or Pac 12 moving anytime soon because no one in their region really makes sense to, The Big ten would only go for Notre Dame. The Big 12 has a pretty sweet TV deal at the moment and I doubt ESPN wants more realignment because it will affect it's deals with other conferences. Maybe Clemson and FSU leave, but even then the ACC would still have 12 teams. I suppose they could take another Big East leftover.

If there is a rule for conference champs only, teams would want to be in conferences with fewer teams. A ten team Big 12 is easier to win than a 14 team SEC.

Hopefully things can settle for at least 3-5 years so no one makes any rash decisions.

  • The Big 12 will not be getting FSU & Clemson. I see them taking Louisville for all sports & BYU for football only.

  • The SEC is so far ahead of everyone except maybe the big 12 that it really would be unfair for only one team from the SEC to make the playoffs under that scenerio.

That would be like the NFL getting one team and the Canadian Football League, the Arena football league, and the girls lingerer league getting a team.

  • clemson will never win in a conference with big name teams unless they get a big name coach. Their best bet would be to stay in a weak acc where they can at least claim they are the best team there (dang, I'm laughing hard). If they only play one big name team a year, then they stand a chance at an upset every once in a blue moon. I know this, and they know this. They won't be leaving anytime soon. they can't stand the thought of winning less than 8 games guaranteed every year with that weak schedule.

Any move that adds North Carolina and Virginia markets makes sense for the SEC. 14 is a horrible number scheduling wise. With the permanent opponent caveat, it takes way too long to play everyone in the conference. I expect the SEC to push hard for NC State and Virginia Tech after this season and move to 4 - 4 team divisions.

If/When Clempson, Fla St, Ga tech, leave for the Big 12 and NC State, Va Tech move to the SEC, then UNC and UVA will move to the Big ten

ND needs to accept the last spot in the Big Ten or Maryland will be their 16th member.

Then the acc will merger with the big east form the pull my finger conference.

I am all for Clemson being in the "Pull My Finger" conference with Boise St., Rutgers, and South Florida...

There was a former coach (maybe a coordinator at OLe Miss) who made the rounds of ATlanta radio shows and was on the SportSouth Sunday nite show for awhile who predcted your exactly scenario back in the mid to late 90s. It may have been just prior to the BCS or maybe when the first BCS complaints got heavy.

Wish I could think of his name, He was an entertaining old guy but a lot of (yunkschters)* didnt like him.

Conference expansion involves multiple factors. Academics plays a larger role than fans recognize. This is the number-one reason FSU will never join the Big 12 and it’s such a strong reason none others are needed.

    He has one thing wrong

West Division: Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, (another team)

East: FSU, Clemson, West Virginia, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kansas, Louisville

It will be North South. Texas will be on one side and OK on the other. They will never give the new teams an easy road to the championship game
