how did we "cheat"?

  • I dont know a whole lot about the situation other than the fact the 12 student athletes got a lower rate at the hotel and something about a "SAM Foundation"? I have no idea what that is but I dont understand the cheater label. Now, I could be very wrong. Im just trying to clarify it for myself and yes I have read up on this too.

  • Our compliance dept approved a rate they had no business approving. OR, it was something they should be monitoring.
And our guys should have known what they were doing with these boosters was a no-no.

It was embarrassing and something we've learned from. Glad the NCAA accepted our penalties! That was a huge thing!!

  • 1st of all there was a lot of shoddy journalism involved with the repeated references to us giving out 56 large in extra benefits. That was all about the whitney. No doubt compliance dropped the ball here but everyone knows NO ONE ever pays rack rate. Plus there were non-athletes getting similar deals.

More problematic was the deal in Philly. Everyone knows what those 2 guys were doing-on their own apparently- was totally against the rules. This is where we dodged a bullet imo.

The taters are just a stupid bunch.

I would not call what we did as "cheating". It was incompetency in the compliance dept.

We were not out there doing illegal things, to gain a competitive edge.

  • They would have totally beat us if those hotel rates were higher, thats practically steroids.

Yea let's use them as a scapegoat when that whole thing was so minor and trivial.

  • I mean we didnt preform an action of any sort that would contribute to giving us a upperhand on the field so I dont see how its cheating.

It seems kind of scary that you would say that.

I think you are splitting hairs trying to differentiate between cheating and breaking the rules.

We didn't. The Whitney thing was a borderline joke, and everything with SAM foundation came down to some unnamed NE program (rhymes with Mutgers) calling friends in NCAA compliance because they kept losing recruits to us.

The Foundation helped dozens of poor kids visit over twenty schools across the country, but the NCAA used the founder's Carolina degree to claim that the athletic visits to South Carolina ONLY were recruiting violations, but the exact aided visits to every other school were ok.

No one goes to Rutgers unless they have to. They suck at sports and they are in New Jersey.

They don't know what cheating is??? You are joking, right? Cheating has been the necks only means of survival over the past 30 + years...

  • We had booster out of control and cheating in Philly, but it was pretty contained. That had nothing to do with compliance really, it was just a booster stepping way over the line and Pretending he didn't know he couldnt.

The Whitney is interesting. I dont know whether the Whitney manager was intentionally cheating or whether he was making a business decision. Either way it was more about public perception. The public looked at the leases based on the published nightly rates. USC compliance looked at it in the prism of reasonable monthly rates in Columbia. Compliance maybe should have known better based on appearance of impropriety.
