  • I wouldn't be surprised to see Zack Smith get into the mix at DH . Smith was one of the best hitters in the CPL in the summer of 2011 .

  • Looks about right to me. If it isn't Webb Friday night I think it will be Monty, with either Beal or Koumas being the other starter. I also think Holmes sticks to Sunday. I'd like to see Koumas get another shot as closer. I think he's got the stuff and the attitude for it if he'll fully embrace it like Price did.

  • My gut tells me that Webb will stay in the pen even though he could certainly be a successful starter throwing like he did in the post-season of 2012. I think the starters are going to be Montgomery, Holmes, Beal, Seddon, and Koumas but I don't have any idea what order they might be.

  • Bryson Celek will be an upper classman and and will probably get a good look at First and DH. Also I dont know about Webb being a starter. I know he has the stuff to be a great starter, but he enjoys being a reliever just like Westmoreland did. They like having a feel for the game before coming in, instead of setting the tone. Just like Price having a "closers mentality," instead of a starter.

  • Britt should be in the mix at first as well, right?

I tried to split up the two lefty's...that is why I put Holmes on Sat. instead of Sunday.

About the only place Celek gets a shot is dh or ph IMO. Way to slow and not athletic enough to see the field on defense.

I didn't know Westy liked being in the pen. I never heard that. I thought he wanted to be a starter. I'm still wondering what his plans are for the future.

I thought Zack Smith was recruited to be a pitcher.

He played at first a few games this year, for whatever that is worth. Tanner wants power from 1st. He has been skeptical of Martin playing 1st because he has not shown that power. If he thinks Celek can hit 15 HR, he will play 1st. Tanner is very, very adamant about this. I guess it's still the gorilla ball in him. It has always been that way. I cannot think of one first baseman we have had that didn't have sick power.

Smoak, Pearce, Walker, even Nick Ebert had nasty power numbers.

Britt will be looked at there. Whittle has said he likes him on the mound.

MCR- was that you who said you like Kyle Martin on the mound? That he reminded you of Roth? Wouldn't that just be too much of a coincidence, if we had another 1st baseman and power bat turn into a crafty lefty on the mound?

I would love to see Pankake pitch. He has one of the best arms I have seen in the infield in a while. I just do not want to see him not play SS. I think the only way would be him as a closer.

Based off of Whittle's last article it sounds like Westy isn't really in the staff's plans for next year. If I'm not mistaken he was not on the active roster for Omaha.

I've never seen Kyle pitch. JW was very high on him but I don't remember if he said he liked him on the mound or not.

I think Whittle listed him as a pitcher but I don't believe that's correct . Don't think he pitches any . USC-Sumter had a pitcher named Tyler Smith that was drafted .

Oh, somebody said that he was Roth-like on the mound, and I think Whittle agreed. That would just be too much symmetry. There is just no way it would work out as well.

Although, most good high school players are very good pitchers AND very good hitters. Even Callahan hit well over .400, I think. Curt Britt hit over .400, and has some power, if I am remembering correctly. I am curious as to who our 1st baseman is. I think that Martin has the power to satisfy Tanner, it's just a matter of him finding it. He is a very big boy for a freshman.

  • Some comments from Holbrook on Zack Smith in The State today :

The Gamecocks struggled to score runs late in the CWS, and with Walker not returning, Holbrook likes the potential of one of his incoming sluggers, USC Sumter transfer Zach Smith, who can play the outfield or serve as the designated hitter.

“We love his bat. He’s strong. He’s got bat speed. He has hit for a high average at the college level,” Holbrook said. “We recruited him to hit in the middle of our lineup and we think he can do that. Hopefully, he’ll fill a void and make up for some of those RBIs and home runs we lost with Walker.”

I could be wrong, just something I have heard from people close to the program (everyone has their sources right?) rumor

Celek did NOT play a few games at first this year. He's not a 15 home run guy. He's about the 5th option at first base.

That's a lot of shifting around for dubious benefit . It gets Shrock's bat in the lineup, but there are better ways to do that . Pankake played so well defensively the last month or so I would expect him to stay at short . Unless he wants to pitch . He's not going to pitch and play short .
