Early look at 2013: Infield

Some key contributors will return, others will want bigger roles, and fresh faces are coming in looking for time. In this early 2013 preview, we take a look at the infield.

  • JW,
In an interview yesterday with Kornblut, Ray said that whoever played first would do so because of hitting.

We must have hitting at the corners...

I think Payne, Britt and Zach Smith are 3 options at 1st besides Martin.

  • I agree with Whittle about Martin and his defense. He's pretty good around the bag. I don't think he will ever be a guy who hits double digit home runs. I do think that he can be a guy who hits 6 to 8 home runs but also hit for a pretty high average.

  • Tanner was on with Korn yesterday and he said Schrock was probably to good to sit and he will find his way to the top of the order. He even said SS was an option, not sure if we should take that Pankake is moved to P or3B. He said LB to 1B isn't out the question but not preferred and 1B will go to whoever is hitting the best. Nothing earth shattering. Thanks for all your work JW!

  • Didn't zach smith play first at sumter last year?

  • Thanx, JW.

Do you get the impression that even if Kyle Martin were to look like he would be a .325 avg guy, but with 5-8 HR, that it would not be enough power at first?

I think Brison Celek could probably hit 13 HR next year, but most would probably come in midweek games, and he would hit around .260. I wonder if Tanner would rather have that? I wouldn't think so, but you never know. I also really have no idea just how good of a hitter Celek can be.

I would think in this dead bat era (and dead ballpark era in Omaha), you would think it would be better to have a guy hitting for high average to all fields than a guy that can pull a few more home runs but won't hit for the same average.

  • Is Harrington done? Or just done at catcher?

Completely agree with this. We should learn from Arizona that hitting for a high average is more effective than hitting for power at TDAP.

We had already learn that...easier said than done.

Maybe one day we will be as good as Arizona.

I think Tanner and staff have adjusted the way we play ball since the change of the bats. We just struggled at the plate this year. What else can you say. Other than a few games we struggled to score a lot of runs. Why was anyone surprised we did not score more in Omaha. Most teams don't out there.
