Greiner to miss Regional

  • Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina freshman catcher Grayson Greiner sustained a lateral meniscus tear to his left knee during practice on Wednesday afternoon at Carolina Stadium.  Greiner will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Thursday with Dr. Chris Mazoué with USC Sports Medicine.  He will miss the 2012 Columbia Regional.

For the season, Greiner has played in 55 games with 48 starts including 42 behind the plate. He is his hitting .236 (41-for-174) with six homers and 31 RBI. Greiner owns a .258 (24-for-93) batting average in the league with 12 of his 234 hits, extra base hits (eight doubles, one triple, three homers). He has also driven in 18 runs and has a .462 slugging percentage in SEC contests.   Defensively he has been sound as well as he has thrown out 17 of 39 runners attempting to steal on him.  He was yesterday named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and recently accepted a spot on this summer’s USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Greiner earned SEC Freshman of the Week after the Mississippi State series. It marked the second straight week a Gamecock had earned Freshman of the Week accolades. Greiner had a key solo home run that jumpstarted a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth as the Gamecocks came from behind to defeat MSU 7-6. Greiner collected three hits over the weekend with a pair of doubles and the home run. He also scored two runs. He also had a grand slam in the 8-0 win over The Citadel.

Coach Tanner will address Greiner’s injury at Thursday’s Pre-Regional Press Conference.

  • Maybe its time to move Walker to Catcher. He played that position in HS and it might help his draft prospects.

Don't think he has the arm. Also, defensively, it is a key position. I can imagine someone like Auburn and how they would run the first time we put Walker back there. Walker could not doubt handle it mentally, I just don't know if he could feasibly throw runners out. He would give it his best, and not complain, though.

You also have to be able to throw breakers in the dirt, and be confident in doing so.

Dante can get the job done. He is a good catcher.

Lets just hope nothing happens to him this weekend. Who will be the back up? Harringinton? Payne?

  • Defensively we'll be just fine. Dante can handle the pitchers and he is solid behind the plate. I'm not very confident in his bat, but Greiner has been scuffling lately. Still not a good thing for our offense, which wasn't setting any records as it was.

  • I gotta think E Payne will be the back up this weekend. Guess we'll find out tomorrow from Tanner.

With 234 hits in league play alone how is is BA so low? He should be stomping the guy from LSU. LOL J/K JWstir

Sucks for GG and the Yardcocks!

  • This is a huge loss - great kid. I am confident that Dante will step up. We will miss his presence in the lineup.

I wonder if, when Roth pitches, that Roth bats for himself, and the DH is used in lieu of Rosey?

I doubt it, prolly a dumb idea.

  • huge loss, he's very steady behind the plate and also keeps base runners honest. even though he is not tearing it up batting average wise he is a long ball threat. I don't think d r can get it done over the long haul

You can only DH for the pitcher in college ball.

  • I honestly don't know who the backup catcher will be at this point. We'll ask a lot of questions about that today and we'll have a story posted early afternoon.

  • Is the postseason roster set per weekend or for the whole tourney? Do we have to have Greiner on the roster this weekend for him to play past this weekend?

Can't lay my hands on the rule, but the general rule with all things NCAA is once a roster is set there's no changing it.
