Even though we didn't make it to Omaha from 2005 to 2009. We were ALWAYS in contention. And that is what you hprave to look at. Not many programs can say that. People thought the 06-08 team was worthy because we had Darnell, Smoak and Havens. But the pitching was short and I always was afraid of that. Considering the lag in facilities for the longest time that Toman and Tanner had to deal with during those years. Id say we were pretty darned good.

    1) Every team was in contention for Omaha.

    2) Our facilities were the same when we made it to Omaha as when we didn't. I doubt that Coach Tanner would have used our facilities as an excuse.

    3) The primary reason we didn't make it to Omaha from 2005-09 is, as you say, because we lacked good pitching. I have no idea why the quality of our staffs plummeted during those 5 years. Any ideas why?

With the exception of 2005 (.278), our hitting was at .299 or above. Our fielding was .971 or better. Our ERA, though, was, from 2005 to 2009, 3.78, 4.60, 3.93, 4.36 and 5.07, respectively.

Also, keep in mind that these are overall stats. I'm sure our SEC stats would reflect a higher ERA.

You never cease to amaze, uscpansy.

I'm starting to think you are some kind of parody. This can't be somebody's real thoughts on our baseball team.

Its a true statement! I didn't make it up. Can you not deal with reality?

The reality is that we won the SEC, beat both UF and Vandy during the regular season, climbed to #1 with a depleted and makeshift outfield, and will be a top 8 seed in the NCAA's.

    That is the reality.

So Vandy's baseball program sucks I guess. Even with all that talent.

    Well played, sir.

He's a troll, period. This garbage is intentional. He starts with his chum and then his pal runs in to defend him. It's like a tired hotel lounge act at this point.

I agree. He's just doing this to get a rise out of everyone. Al's "hall monitor defense" is the same type of trolling.

Best thing would be to just let Andy post a negative thread and then either ignore it or laugh at it. Creating long threads debating him is exactly what he wants. I admit, though, that even though I know Candy is a troll, I will still sometimes take the bait.

this team has done a great job over the last 15-20 years. I don't think they have gotten the attention deserved b/c of so many great teams that never made it to Omaha but that's to be expected when a team doesn't live up to those lofty expectations but they have been a great team for 2 decades

    I don't agree that we've been a "great" team for 20 years.

I think you could characterize our teams from 2000-2004 as "great." Any team which wins the national championship is great. If we don't completely fall on our faces in the NCAA tourney, this year's team would rightly be considered great. Beyond that, I think we've had a very good program, a team which finishes more often than not in the top 20-30.

Going forward, I'd consider a "great" team as one which finishes in the top 10 and/or makes it to Omaha. I believe we'll meet that definition more often than not for quite a while.

  • Much more annoying. You can express concerns, I think everyone agrees with that. It's that its like a broken record and most of the time doesn't make any sense.

  • There is no sunshine pumping going on continuously on The Sarge. There is admiration for a program that since Coach Tanner has been here has been a Top 10 National program. Amazing college baseball players have donned the Garnet and Black under Tanner. The 2011 team has numerous flaws. Injuries, less pro talent and questionable base running have plagued this team since the beginning of the season. Has that stopped them from overcoming all of that to be a top 8 seed and the SEC champs? No this group has fought through all the obstacles placed in front of it. They are the defending National Champions and every member on this site pretty much admires these facts except for 2 posters. All of these things are downplayed by these aforementioned posters and people here are simply getting sick and tired of it! People wouldn't have a problem discussing issues that aren't rosy if they weren't harped on all the time!

Not anymore annoying than the constant sunshine pumping thinking everything is great and rosey all the time.

    Andy,

If we were floundering, and struggling for an NCAA bid, I could really understand why you would post, the way you do.

But you continue to ignore the facts as to where we are, how we got here, and where we are going.

You do nothing but post negative insights about our team, when you yourself basically don't understand the game of baseball.

Again, we are the SEC champs, currently #1 in the country, will be a top 8 seed, and doing this with a makeshift lineup.

You need to acknowledge that, like most people, including media types from around the league do.

    1) There is a lot of sunshine pumping on The Sarge. Nothing wrong with that, though. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and, with respect to our baseball program, there's a lot of sunshine to pump.

    2) Coach Tanner has done a very good job as head baseball coach at Carolina. He is one of the top baseball coaches in the country. He's led our teams to many Top 10 finishes. Let's look at where his teams have finished (rankings by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and USA Today, respectively):

    1997 - unranked
    1998 - 16, 19, 18
    1999 - unranked
    2000 - 4, 9, 8
    2001 - 12, 15, 13
    2002 - 2, 2, 2
    2003 - 10, 6, 7
    2004 - 3, 3, 3
    2005 - 25, 26, 23
    2006 - 13, 12, 15
    2007 - 10, 11, 10
    2008 - unranked, 28, unranked
    2009 - 25, 21, 21
    2010 - 1, 1, 1

In 11 out of Coach Tanner's 14 years, he's led our team to a Top 25 finish. In 6 of his 14 years, he's led us to a Top 10 finish. This year will no doubt make 7 Top 10 finishes in 15 years. That record would certainly make any coach - and any fan base - in any sport proud. It makes me proud. Not worshipful, but proud.

    3) I don't think our team has numerous flaws. I see only two - lack of hitting and, to a lesser extent, baserunning. Of all the possible flaws for a team to have, they're the ones which can be overcome in order for the team win. Our pitching and defense have made us difficult to beat. Going forward, if Coach Holbrook can recruit better hitters at a few spots we can become near impossible to beat.

    4) Coach Tanner doesn't use injuries as an excuse. That's one of the things I like about him. The players who were asked to replace the injured have done as good a job, if not a better job, than the players they replaced. That's the mark of a good team - and good coaching.

    5) We are, in fact, the defending national champions. I was well pleased when we won the title last year. Last year's title has no relevance, however, with respect to the performance of this year's team. Our opponents don't spot us runs because we won the title last year.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

  • Straight from the urban dictionary:

One who fails to realize the reality of a situation, and instead continues to support/ballyhoo a person, program, etc.

The sunshine pumper sees that their team and coaches are playing hard equating to good, when in fact the players are not performing adequately and the coaches have failed to properly recruit/train/coach the team.

I'd love to see some examples of this on this forum in the past 15 months.

If you can't sunshine pump the defending national champion that is also currenly the unanimous #1 team in the country in the major polls, when CAN you sunshine pump????

Seriously, think about that for a minute....

Why even pretend to be a fan?
