Just one of those nights

  • I have been waiting for us to bust out offensively and last night was the night! Now, I didn't expect 24 runs, but I'll take it all day long. Very good performance all around, pitching, defense, and hitting! It was nice to give our bullpen a rest, especially Taylor who has pitched a lot for us so far this season. CofC is a good team and has always had good bats, but the big question with them seems to center around their pitching. In most instances, they have to outscore you. Congrats to the Cocks!

There are just still too many issues for me to be happy with this team. I mean, yes we scored more runs than our basketball team does points but....Christian Walker is quite possibly our best hitter and he didn't get a hit until late when the game was decided. In other words, it was a cheap, meaningless, no pressure hit. You're not going to beat Florida, Vandy or the '29 Yankees with your cleanup hitter performing like that!
Then there is the pitching. Colby Holmes threw well...for a while! Then he got careless with a 19 run lead and started leaving it over the plate. You start doing that against Florida and 24 runs won't be enough! You should NEVER have to go to the pen with a lead that big but Ray Tanner continues to have his staff ill prepared and lacking focus, I guess!
I know it was a big win and I'm happy but I have to be a realist and call it like I see it and even though we're a top 5 team and just hung 3 TD's and a FG on a good team that was a blown call from being in the Supers last year, this team has issues and leaves a lot to be desired! But hey, I'm still a fan and I put in lots of exclamation points to prove it!

Don't forget that Sullivan came in with the bases loaded and no outs and proceeded to give up 1 run. That kind of performance from the bullpen won't cut it either. stache

In defense of our starter, Colby Holmes, or any pitcher hurling with a huge lead and long periods of time between innings, is going to lose concentration as the game progresses. Although Colby was pretty efficient through six innings, he might have been getting a little tired and that impacts concentration as well. CofC has some good hitters. I am not certain, but it may have been the longest stint of his career at USC.

One time I thought mine was busted but it turned out it was just the battery. :)
