BOTTOM 9 - Martin pops out. Carson goes down swinging on three pitches. English grounds out 3-1 to end the game. FINAL: Arkansas 15 - Carolina 3. LP: Beal (2-1) The Gamecocks (18-4, 2-2) and Arkansas play again on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. on Fox Sports.
TOP 9 - Seddon back out to the mound. No one throwing in the bullpen. Gets a pop out to Vergason at second. Then gives up a line drive double down the left field line. Single to left puts runners at the corners. Umpires gift South Carolina an out. Vergason fields a potential double play ball. Flips to Pankake, who falls all over himself and drops the ball. Umpire gives him the out at second anyway. No throw to first. Runner comes into score. Seddon strikes out the next hitter to end the inning. Arkansas leads 15-3
BOTTOM 8 - Dantzler walks to give the Gamecocks their leadoff runner. Greiner flies out to left. Britt goes down looking at three pitches. Don't think we'll see him at the plate tomorrow. Bright goes down swinging on four pitches. Now they're playing The Joker. Arkansas leads 14-3.
TOP 8 - Seddon gets Ficociello to fly out to center. Schwanke hits a line drive to right center. Tanner English lays out and makes a great diving catch. Half-injured kid playing in a lopsided game still playing hard. Wise pops out to deep second. Vergason catches it over the shoulder. Probably should have given way to English. Arkansas leads 14-3.
BOTTOM 7 - English works a leadoff walk but is wiped away on Vergason's second double play of the night. Pankake pops out to left center to end the inning. Arkansas leads 14-3.
TOP 7 - Vinson walks off Koumas to begin the inning. Lot of people still here, which is semi-surprising. Ficociello flies out to Bright, who camps under it in right field. Another walk will end Koumas' day. Joel Seddon in to pitch. He strikes out Wise but both runners on base steal on him. Runners on second and third with two down. Seddon issues a walk to load the bases. Seddon gives up a line drive single back up the middle. Hits off his shoulder and deflects into left field. Trainer out to check on Seddon. He stays in. Tough cookie. Infield single to deep short. Dantzler should have been covering third base. If he was, Pankake may have had a play there. Bases loaded, two outs. Bouncing single up the middle. Scores two. Gamecocks throw it around the diamond and the runner moves to second. Two in scoring position now. Seddon still in facing four-hole hitter Anderson. He hits a line drive right at Dantzler, who has the ball go right through his glove. Don't see that very often. E5. After 33 pitches, Seddon finally gets out of the inning with a pop up to Dantzler, who catches this one. Arkansas leads 14-3
BOTTOM 6 - Pankake singles and Dantzler doubles to the right center gap to put South Carolina on the board. Pankake coasts around third base and scores standing up. Greiner doubles to the gap in left center. That brings home Dantzler. Britt puts bat on ball and grounds out 3-1. Moves the runner up. Bright bounces a 2-1 fastball the other way and through the four hole. That plates Greiner. Arkansas calls in reliever Brandon Moore, who has been one of their best pitchers this year. He gets Martin to ground out and Carson to strike out to end the inning. Arkansas leads 9-3
TOP 6 - Mahan flies out to center. Serrano grounds to short. Pankake throws a one-hopper to Martin, who makes a nice play on the stretch. I've always liked him over there defensively. Pankake makes an error on a bouncer to his left he didn't get in front of. Hits off the heel of his glove and into center. One on, two outs. Koumas gets Anderson swinging to end the inning. Time to start chipping away at the lead. Arkansas leads 9-0.
BOTTOM 5 - Martin up. He hits a 2-2 grounder to short. He gets down the line quickly for a dude his size. Shortstop is slow. Martin looked like he may have beaten the throw out but he's called out by Blue. He's not happy. One down. Carson grounds out to short. Anderson didn't lollygag on that play. English grounds a single back up the middle. He's reached base twice upon his return tonight. FicoFico picks a line drive up just off the dirt for the final out of the inning. Arkansas leads 9-0.
TOP 5 - FicoFico hits a p-rod single to left to start the inning. Schwanke goes down on strikes to give Koumas his first K of the game. Wise hits a soft liner to Pankake. Caught. Two down. Make that two Ks for Koumas as he gets Morris to end the inning. Arkansas leads 9-0.
BOTTOM 4 - Greiner grounds out sharply to third. Britt goes down on three pitches again. Bright goes ahead in the count 3-0 but grounds out to the shortstop. Arkansas leads 9-0.
TOP 4 - Spoon, the team's leading hitter, serves a single to right center to begin the inning. Anderson bounces a single back up the middle to put two on with no one out. Vinson drops a bunt single up the third base line. Was a sac attempt, but a perfect bunt and Dantzler just can't make the play. Ficociello wrung up on strikes. Not sure if the umpire called Strike 3 because he went around or because it was in the zone. Van Horn not happy. Neither is FicoFico. Van Horn gets warned. Five-pitch walk to Schwanke brings home a run. Same deal with Wise. Beal has lost the zone. Most of these pitches aren't close right now. What's funny is Meyers went to the mound after the K and Beal promptly walked two people. Greiner visits after a first pitch ball to Morris and Beal throws two strikes. Beal puts a fastball right in there and it's crushed to left center. Hops over the wall into the Arky bullpen for a ground rule double. That plates two more. Another walk re-loads the bases. Fans growing restless wanting a pitching change. Not yet, says Meyers. Beal throws a wild pitch to bring a runner in. I think Greiner may have gotten crossed up on the pitch. Didn't look like a typical block from him. Serrano grounds out 6-3. Runners can't advance. Two down. Beal gives up a two-RBI single to left. That'll end the day for Beal, who gives up seven earned runs on six hits. He was so, so good the first three innings and so, so bad the fourth. Forrest Koumas comes in and gives up a home run on his first pitch of the night. Yeck. Vinson lines out to left to end the inning. That one was brutal. Arkansas leads 9-0
BOTTOM 3 - Shon Carson up and hits about a 25 foot single up the third base line. He swipes second on a 0-1 pitch to Tanner English. He eventually goes down on strikes on a beautiful offspeed pitch from Astin. He had me frozen. Vergason walks. Umpire still doesn't like that outside corner on left-handed hitters. Pankake hits a sharp bouncer to the right of the shortstop. It's bobbled. Pankake is still thrown out at first. I clocked him 4.62 to first base. You'd like to see him there about .3 quicker than that. Dantzler goes down on strikes. Missed an opportunity there. No score.
TOP 3 - Fastball knocked for the first hit of the game back up the middle by Jake Wise to begin the third inning. Morris bunts him up 1-3. Mahan hits one on the screws but to English in center. He makes the catch running in. He is much-needed out there. Two down. Beal ahead in the count 2-2 on Serrano after a 93 mph fastball strike. Then gets caught looking on an 88 mph fastball strike. Good Beal. No score.
BOTTOM 2 - Grayson Greiner to the plate. He hits a breaking ball about 350 feet but foul and out of the stadium. Takes a fastball down the middle for a strike on a 2-1 count then bails out on a 2-2 slider swing. Wasn't within a few feet of touching that one. One down. Britt at the plate making his second start in the batting order. Curt Britt goes down swinging on three pitches. That was quick. I only saw two. Musta blinked. Bright up and swings at the first two pitches and misses. Bright has been real good this season but he swings at every pitch within reach and is pulling everything. The scouting report is going to get around on him. He hits a bouncer to short. Throw is high and pulls Schwanke off the bag. Bright gets in under the tag, umpire rules. Turns his foot on the base and walks gingerly back to the bag. He's on first with Martin up. He fists a pitch back to the mound. Astin snares it for the final out of the inning. No score.
TOP 2 - Beal back to the bump. Not sure what his problem is -- he doesn't strike out the first hitter. Weak sauce. Fly ball to center. Umpire isn't liking the outside corner today. Couple of borderline pitches go against the Bealster as Vinson reaches on a 3-2 walk. Ficociello tries to bunt for a base hit but Beal makes a very good, athletic play bouncing off quickly, getting his feet set, then firing to first base for the out. Nice play. Ruled a sacrifice bunt. Vinson moves up to second. Count goes full on Schwanke, who chases a high fastball to end the inning. No score.
BOTTOM 1 - Tanner English up for his first plate appearance since March 6. He works a nine-pitch walk to begin the game. Great at-bat from last year's strikeout king but one of the better guys on the team this year at working the count. Vergason bounces into a routine 4-6-3 double play to clear the bases. Pankake works another walk. He takes off for second as LB Dantzler takes a rip at an offering from Astin. He hits a hard ground ball but it's right at Ficociello, who plays it off his chest and throws out Dantzler at first base. No score.
TOP 1 - Evan Beal out to the mound for the Gamecocks. Through one batter, he has his good stuff tonight. Strikes out Mahan on a filthy slider. Really is good stuff from the guy. Then Ks Serrano. Holy moly. Three up, three strikeouts. Doesn't matter who's in the field if he's going to strike everyone out. Put me at third! No score.
I'm not overly surprised that this is the way that Chad Holbrook went with his lineup shuffle. I'm sure it's the best way to do it. My hunch and my feeling was to go with DC Arendas at second base, which means minimal moves in the rest of the lineup. But I'm a reporter.
It's a cold night out here with a bit of a breeze coming in from left field. It's not the greatest day for baseball but they've played in worse.
Tonight's game is on CSS. If you live in Columbia, it's been picked up by Time Warner Cable channel 506.
