Live from Carolina Stadium: USC vs. Florida ...

  • BOTTOM 9 - Payne pops out to second base. Dantzler cuts the lead in half with an opposite field home run into the visitors bullpen. Matthews falls behind 1-2 in the count. One of those pitches was a bad check-swing call. He pops out in foul territory to the first baseman. Brison Celek pinch hitting for English. He lines out to center to end the game. FINAL: Florida 5 - Carolina 4. L: Price (3-2) HR: Dantzler (4). USC will travel to The Citadel on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

TOP 9 - Gushue grounds out and Turgeon goes down on strikes. Two down for MattyP. He loses the strike zone against Ramjit and walks him on four straight pitches. Goes ahead of Cody Dent 0-1 though. Make it 0-2. Make it a full count. Got to get Dent. Don't want to face the top of the order here. Ooops. Price hits Dent with an 89 mph fastball. That couldn't feel good. At all. Fontana down in the count 1-2 and ropes a triple to the wall in right center. Nice piece of clutch hitting by a guy who was 0-for-9 on the weekend coming into the day. Pigott flies to right to end the inning. Gators lead 5-3

BOTTOM 8 - Marzilli pops out in foul territory to the third baseman. Pankake walked by Rodriguez. Maddox comes in and throws a breaking ball over the head of Walker, which moves Pankake up to second. UF decides, and probably a good idea, to put Walker on intentionally. Roth will pinch hit against Maddox. He falls behind in the count quickly 0-2. Make it 1-2 on a wild pitch. Infield in as the runners move up into scoring position. Roth Ks. Greiner up. Up to him. Greiner goes down looking. He can't figure out a slider right now. Tie game.

TOP 8 - Geez. One of those Matt Price moments where he just completely fooled Tucker with a fastball on the inside half. Tucker couldn't even get the bat off his shoulder, but just walks to the dugout. One down. Zunino pops out to right. Johnson pops out to Pankake at deep short to end the inning. Tie ball game. Top of the order due up for the Gamecocks.

BOTTOM 7 - Doesn't look like anything is going to happen this inning as Dantzler and Matthews both go down looking. English grounds out 3-1 to end the inning. Score tied 3-3. After 7 innings, Carolina 3 - Florida 3. Joey Pankake tied the game with an RBI single. Matt Price is pitching for the Gamecocks.

TOP 7 - Webb back out there to begin his fourth inning of work. Ks Dent to start the inning and then gets a ground ball off the bat of Fontana. Matt Price coming on now to face RHH Pigott. He pops up to Walker in foul ground to end the inning. Stretch time. Gamecocks sending Dantzler, Matthews, and English up. Score tied 3-3

BOTTOM 6 - Costen pinch hits for Martin against LHP Steven Rodriguez, who just entered for the Gators. He taps to third. One down. Greiner goes down swinging for the second out of the inning. Turgeon makes a heck of a play on a ground ball on the wrong side of second base. Slides and gets rid of it quickly. I would have thought Payne could beat that one out, but can't. Score tied 3-3.

TOP 6 - Webb gets a fly ball out to center by Johnson. Gushue walks to put one aboard off Webb, who has been very, very good again today. He had a couple of not-quite-as-good performances against UK, but he's doing well today. Gets a line out by Turgeon to Payne at second. Ramjit pops out to Marzilli in right center. It's nice having outfielders who know how to catch. Don't take that for granted. ninja Score tied 3-3.

BOTTOM 5 - Matthews lines out third base to begin the inning. English up. One thing the threat of speed and bunt does is draw in the third baseman close. That makes it tougher to field a ground ball as there's less time to react. English bounces what should be a routine grounder towards third, but it's just hard enough to get past Dent and into the corner. Standup double. WOW! Hekc of a play by Ramjit in left! Fly ball right on the rail in foul territory by Marzilli. Ramjit gets there just in time and basically runs over a fan to make the play. That could be a SportsCenter highlight. Pankake bounces a sharp single through the left side. English hauls tail around the bag and scores to tie this thing up. Gah, that kid can fly. And the Pankake kid can hit, too. Walker pops up to second to end the inning. Score tied 3-3

TOP 5 - Big inning here for Webb. Need to get the bats back up. Florida has their top of the order up. He gets Fontana to ground out to begin the inning. Pigott singles to put one on, but Tucker pops up to deep short. Two down. Meyers out to have a quick chat with Webb facing Zunino. He lines a 1-1 curve ball to center to end the inning. Big one there for the Gamecocks and Webb. Gators lead 3-2.

BOTTOM 4 - Pankake singles to left to break up the no hitter. Walker hits a lazy fly ball to left center. Pigott camps under it, but loses it somehow and it falls right beside him. Martin bunts the runners up. Greiner shoots a solid single to center. Runners had to freeze to be sure it dropped, but Pankake comes in easily from third base. Walker moves to third. Payne turns on a 92 mph fastball and launches it a long, long way but foul. Next pitch he flies to shallow right and just deep enough to get Walker in sliding around Zunino's tag. Greiner remains on first base. Dantzler ropes a pitch just foul that would have been a double. Dantzler grounds out to second for the second time. Gators lead 3-2

TOP 4 - Gushue strikes out swinging to begin the inning off of new pitcher Tyler Webb. South Carolina has a lot of arms available today and Tanner is not going to waste any time going to his bullpen. Turgeon shoots a double just inside the third base bag and into the left field corner. Ramjit grounds to third. Dantzler fields cleanly, looks the runner back, and throws to Walker. Throw was a little low and Walker makes the routine pick. Two down. Ramjit grounds back to Webb, who fields and takes his time, but makes the play. Gators lead 3-0.

BOTTOM 3 - LB Dantzler grounds out, again, to the right side. Matthews works a one-out walk but is left standing there after English pops out to second and Marzilli strikes out swinging. Gators lead 3-0.

TOP 3 - Holmes gets two outs on ground balls to Erik Payne at second base to Fontana and Tucker. Bad news is, Pigott hit between them and he launched his second home run of the season into the bullpen in left center. 2-0, 2 down. Zunino unleashes on a Holmes offering and makes it 3-0. Holmes has given up five hits through three innings. Gators lead 3-0

BOTTOM 2 - Kyle Martin goes down swinging at some high heat. He's not going ot catch up to 92 or 93 up there like Crawford is throwing. He's a down-in-the-zone hitter. Greiner grounds out to second. Payne hits a sharp shot back up the middle. Fontana shows why he's SEC All-Defensive team making a diving play and throwing out Payne without a problem. Gators lead 1-0.

TOP 2 - Gushue pops out to Matthews in right. He stumbles briefly but recovers and makes the play. Turgeon ropes a single to right field. The ball bounced on the dirt and Payne almost had it, but it went underneath him. A "Wingo woulda had it" play, but a tough one. Holmes goes 0-2 on Ramjit. He goes down swinging on a 2-2 pitch. Dent goes down swinging on what looked like a nice little change from up here. It was hard to tell though. No matter the pitch, it was a swing and miss. Gators lead 1-0.

BOTTOM 1 - Evan Marzilli leads off the game hit by a pitch. Good to get the leadoff runner on, but now we'll see what happens. No action on the base paths as Joey Pankake lines out to left. Christian Walker pops out to right center. Two down as Marzilli stands on first. Well, with a 1-2 count on Martin, Marzilli takes off and is cut down stealing. I thought he was safe. Blue disagrees. He's the only one whose opinion matters. Gators lead 1-0.

TOP 1 - Nolan Fontana has been semi-quiet this weekend. Can't hold him down for three straight games. He leads off with a single. Pigott flies out to center. Tucker hits a hot shot that short hops Walker. Incredibly difficult play. Bounces off him and into foul territory to put runners on the corners. Zunino lifts a high fly ball to the right field corner. Matthews tracks it down, but it's good enough for a sac fly. Johnson pops out to left, but the Gators are on the board. Gators lead 1-0

Hey folks. Sorry we're running late today. Got over here late from the scrimmage and there were some things happening in the press box. I'm here now though! Gamecocks are currently taking the field. Beautiful day at the stadium. Lots of empty seats right now. The threat of weather may have kept a few folks away, I guess.

  • I'm surprised Celek isn't back in the lineup today. He looked good last night.

    Jeff4SC

  • We just can't seem to get out of the 1st inning without giving up a run.

    Jeff4SC

  • suprised they didnt sac with pankake there or hit and run..

  • Marzilli was safe. Same freaking umpire that was behind the plate last night.

Marzilli takes off and is cut down stealing. I thought he was safe.

Definitely looked safe from my vantage point as well.

  • Holmes threw that ball right down the middle. Good grief.

    Jeff4SC

  • Another one right down the middle. Holmes just can't go a game without giving up home runs.

    Jeff4SC

  • HRs kill us. It takes us multiple hits, a sac bunt and a walk to get runs across and UF just kills it.

  • True...but you can't just groove pitches right down the middle and that is what he did. We need to answer with something or this game is over. We should be able to hit this pitcher they are throwing and we aren't.

    Jeff4SC

  • Making this pitcher look like an all star.

    Jeff4SC

  • Holmes is leaving the ball up again. The gators have some power, but you got to pitch smarter than that. You have to be either high, or down in the zone. He is over the middle a bit much as well. He is not bad, its just every little mistake costs you against these guys.

Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.

  • If you watch Crawford, he is making more of the same mistakes up in the zone. We are just not making him pay. By the end of the year, this will change. These guys just have to get more comfortable.

The last pitch of the 3rd was 97. That made him look like an all star.

  • They also look lost. Matthews walked and then English comes up and swings at the first pitch.

    Jeff4SC

  • We moved Price to the pen bc a few blown saves and now he pitches 1 1/3 innings in a close game 1 inning up 7 runs and it caused us to pitch 8 bullpen innings Friday which killed the pen and now 6 today.

  • Whittle,

You agree with Kendall? SC infield not very quick or instinctive?

  • Whittle, and dudes,

Do ya'll think maybe we ought to go with Roth on fridays, Beal on saturdays, and Webb on sundays?

I am not giving up on Holmes or Koumas, but they would be good relievers as well. The long ball is killing us, and we need to get into games early. Price will give us the closer in the end, its just in between, or to start with that Tanner has some thinking to do.

BTW, I don't think andy will agree, but our outfield is a LOT better than Fla's.

    Webb definitely deserves another chance.

  • Price is our second best pitcher and best pro pitchin prospect. Let him start and pitch 110+ innings instead if 55ish.

  • Walker is crafty with his slides. That guy is a competitor, and a baseball player. He does have good speed for a first baseman.
