Live from Carolina Stadium: USC vs. Wofford ...

  • BOTTOM 11 - Leadoff walk to Vergason. Bright bunts him up. At least that was successful, finally. Roth pops out to right and Greiner grounds out to second to end the game. FINAL: Wofford 5 - Carolina 4 (11 innings) L: Beal (1-2). South Carolina will host No. 1 Florida on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

TOP 11 - Another leadoff walk. That's three straight innings. It's going to come back to bite sooner or later. Sacrifice bunt is successful. Diamadurous and Doyle due up. Diamadurous ropes an RBI single to left. Costen made a diving attempt onthe sinking liner but could not come up with it. Doyle is hit by a pitch and that'll end Beal's night. Seddon comes in and gets a pair of ground balls. Wofford leads 5-4

BOTTOM 10 - Walker with a ground out to third and Dantzler with a ground out to second. Two quickies. Costen Ks on a breaking ball in the dirt. 4-4.

TOP 10 - Leadoff walk. Failed sac bunt attempt and strikeout leave the runner at first with one down. Stolen base moves Eck swipes second, but Beal registers another strikeout. Runner on second with two down now. Shortstop Cantrell up. He looks at first pitch strike. Make that two pitches, two strikes. Slow roller towards Pankake at short. He makes a nice charge play and throw to get the final out of the inning. Score tied 4-4.

BOTTOM 9 - Rosenberg, Marzilli, and Pankake all strike out. Gamecocks not exactly hitting their stride before Florida. Also in danger of burning out a key arm -- Beal -- if they don't end this thing quickly. Score still tied 4-4.

TOP 9 - Leadoff walk by Belcher and a successful sacrifice bunt by Wofford puts the go-ahead run in scoring position with one out. Diamadourous up now, and, yes, I know I'm spelling that wrong. Doyle on deck. Evan Beal coming in to pitch. He gets a pop out to deep short. Should have been Costen's ball, who is now in there in left field after pinch running. They're going to walk Doyle. Smart, smart play. Cleanup hitter pops out to English in right to end the inning. Score tied.

BOTTOM 8 - Kyle Martin leads off the inning with a walk. TJ Costen in to pinch run for him. Vergason, who came in for defense in the eighth, asked to bunt. He watches a strike go by, fouls one off, then pulls the bunt back on a two-strike curve ball that is taken for a called strike. Yeck. Costen swipes second and is in scoring position. Matthews Ks on a sweeping breaking ball. English Ks on a high fastball to end the inning. Man, oh man. It's going to be a late night tonight for ole Whittle. Score tied 4-4.

TOP 8 - Top-of-the-order hitter Foster singles. Diamadorous strikes out. Sully will give way to Hunter Privette. He's in to face Doyle, who absolutely tattoos one onto the concourse in left field. Lands on the walkway between the permanent red seats and the bleachers. Nolan Belcher comes in and immediately loads the bases on two walks and a single. There's only one down. Ray Tanner goes out to the mound for a visit. That's very, very rare. Whatever he says works as Belcher strikes out the next two to end the inning. Score tied 4-4

BOTTOM 7 - Pankake fans at a breaking ball outside to strike out for the first out of the inning. Walker pops out for out number two. Motoring right along here. Dantlzer is up and fans at a 1-1 breaking ball of the 68 mph variety. Then he chases a fastball high and out of the zone. That's working a hitter. Nothing doing that inning for the Gamecocks. USC leads 4-2 going to the eighth.

TOP 7 - Sully back out there. Gets the first hitter swinging to begin the seventh. Make that two strikeouts for the man with the one-seam fastball. Ground ball out ends the inning. Gamecocks lead 4-2 at the stretch.

BOTTOM 6 - Martin pops out to short to begin the inning. Payne with a dribble back to the mound to bring up Adam Matthews with the bases cleared and two outs. He walks, then English singles through the right side. Little two-out magic. Rosenberg singles back through the middle to bring home a run and put runners at the corners. Marzilli strikes out to end the inning. Gamecocks 4-2

TOP 6 - Leadoff single to left starts the inning. That brings up Doyle, who is one of the top two catchers in the SoCon. He hasn't been catching much due to injuries, I believe, and he's playing in right field. He's not bad out there either. He goes yard just over the wall in LCF to bring this back to a one-run game. Patrick Sullivan in to pitch with a 2-0 count. He ends up walking him on four pitches, and the walk is charged to Westy. Sullivan gets a GIDP 5-4-3 though to clear the bases. Another walk puts a runner on for Roney. This game has slowed down. Rosenberg throws a strike down to second to get the base runner trying to steal. Gamecocks lead 3-2

BOTTOM 5 - Rosenberg pops up to short and Marzilli grounds out to short. Pankake ropes a double inside the third base bag. Not two minutes after I tweeted that the Gamecocks haven't flirted with a long ball on a night that the wind is blowing out, Christian Walker puts one into the grounds crew tunnel below the scoreboard. That's his second of the yearn Dantzler grounds out to end the inning. Gamecocks lead 3-0

TOP 5 - Panake makes a very nice play deep in the hole for the first out of the inning. He has the best range and the best arm strength. He's just inconsistent. Wow. Erik Payne with a nice play just to his side of the second base bag. Man. I didn't think I'd see that from him. Getting better, folks. Getting better. Single just inside the third base bag puts one on for the Terriers. Single to right center puts two on, but Westy gets out of it with a fly ball to left to end the inning. Gamecocks still on top 1-0.

BOTTOM 4 - Gamecocks get a pair of runners on, but can't do anything else in the bottom of the fourth. Matthews reached on an infield hit, Martin singled to center. English grounded out to the pitcher tough to end the inning. Gamecocks lead 1-0.

TOP 4 - Pair of quick outs for Westy -- Pop out to center and ground ball to third. Dantzler still doing a very good job of picking it up. Make that three quick ones. Strike out looking. Gamecocks still up 1-0.

BOTTOM 3 - Adam Matthews leads off the inning with a four-pitch walk and moves to third on a single to center by Tanner English. English moves up to second when the throw from center gets by the third baseman. Two in scoring position, no outs for Dante Rosenberg. He pops his first pitch up in foul territory to first. One down. Infield at double play depth in the middle and in on the corners for Evan Marzilli, who has reached base in all 21 games so far this season 17 - with a hit. He walks on seven pitches. That loads the bases for Joey Pankake. He gets a good piece of one and lines out to center field. Plenty deep enough to get the run in from third. Runners at the corners for Walker, who pops up to the catcher for the final out of the inning. Gamecocks lead 1-0

TOP 3 - Westmoreland gets his hitters ... There was a two-out error on Joey Pankake. Didn't stay down on a ground ball. Westy works around it though. No score.

First two innings - Neither team has had much of a threat just yet. Wofford began the game with a walk, but Westmoreland got out of it facing the minimum. He got a fly out to left and a double play ball of the 5-4-3 variety. Marzilli singled to start the game, but he was doubled off on a hit-and-run line drive off Pankake's bat to right field.

The wind is blowing out today to left field as some storms appear like they may move in. No shocking developments in the lineup. Just getting Kyle Martin, next year's every day first baseman, some in-game reps. There's nothing wrong with Walker. They've got Adam Matthews back into the lineup again tonight.

    South Carolina

    CF - Evan Marzilli
    SS - Joey Pankake
    DH - Christian Walker
    3B - LB Dantzler
    1B - Kyle Martin
    2B - Erik Payne
    RF - Adam Matthews
    LF - Tanner English
    C - Dante Rosenberg

    LHP - Adam Westmoreland

  • Does Joey P remind anyone else of Reese Havens? A little more muscular than most middle infielders, good bat. Heck even his build, face and batting stance remind me alot of Havens.

  • We continue to leave men all over the basepaths and it seems like every mistake our pitchers make gets tattooed.

  • Their closer is making us look terrible. About 24 hours ago, I said an easy win tonight would be a great way to go into the Florida series. Oh well.
