TOP 9 - Costen walks on five pitches to start the inning. RHP Johnny Magliozzi in to pitch. English bunts him up. Kind of surprised they didn't bunt him from the left side to put him a couple steps closer to the bag and put more pressure on the defense. Either way, sac bunt is successful. Tying run in scoring position with one out. Saiko grounds out 6-3. Routine play for Dent. Costen hustles back to the second base bag. Chase Vergason up as the Gamecocks' last hope. Count goes 1-1 on an offspeed pitch called a strike. Vergy lines a single through the right side. Cory Reid comes up throwing and puts it right on the plate. Costen stumbled coming around the bag. He tries to go back to third base but he's thrown out. Wow. And that's how it ends. FINAL: Gators win 3-2
BOTTOM 8 - Belcher still on the mound and still throwing well. Gets Turgeon to pop out lazily to left. One down. Gushue pops up to Pankake at short. Shafer serves a single to right but is picked off at first base. Florida leads 3-2.
TOP 8 - Bright's flare is caught at deep second by Turgeon. One down. Greiner bounces a single back up the middle to give the Gamecocks a base runner. Greiner caught trying to swipe second base on an 0-2 pitch. It was a fastball outside. Count goes to 2-2 on Celek, who now hits with the bases empty. Celek pops out to short to end the inning. Gators lead 3-2.
BOTTOM 7 - Bader up and taps it back to the mound. Belcher throws to first. One down. He walks Fahrman on five pitches to give the Gators a base runner. Dent lines to center for the second out. English didn't have to move. Martin grounds to third. Vergason makes the play look easy. Gators still lead 3-2. Carolina has Bright, Greiner, and Celek due up. Three of the hottest hitters on the team right now.
TOP 7 - Tanner English leads off the inning. Hits a sharp grounder to third. I know he's fast and so do you but he looked quicker down the line than usual there. Tobias throws him out by a half step. One down. Saiko takes a walk. Probably see some action here at some point on the bases ... maybe not. Vergy drops a bloop single down the left field line. Pankake hits a fly ball to right field. Shafer settles under it and hits his cutoff man as Saiko tags and goes to third. Gators call in LHP Daniel Gibson to face LHH LB Dantzler. He rolls over on a fastball that seemed to be over the heart of the plate. Knocks it to second base. Play is made. Gators lead 3-2.
BOTTOM 6 - Defensive changes. Iskenderian is out. Bright to second base. Vergason to third. Costen to right field. Belcher notches the first two outs of the inning on fly balls. Tobias knocks a single to give the Gators a two-out base runner but he's picked off to end the inning. Belcher faces the minimum. Gators lead 3-2.
TOP 6 - Dantzler up and hits a baseball 400 feet to straightaway center. Too bad it's 404 out there. One down. Bright and Greiner both rope singles to left. Celek hits a soft fly ball to center. Martin camps under it. Runners can't advance. Iskenderian down in the count 0-2 but works it back to 3-2. He's frozen with a filthy slider. From my vantage point up here, that looked like a pretty darn good pitch. Gators lead 3-2.
BOTTOM 5 - Martin up. He hits a slow roller to Pankake at short. Makes a nice play there. One down. Routine grounder to Pankake. Two down. Gushue flies out to shallow center. Gators lead 3-2.
TOP 5 - Saiko up and grounds the first pitch he sees to Tobias at third base. He's been solid over there today. One down. Vergy caught looking at a fastball that appeared to be a bit inside. Pankake pops out down the right field line for the final out of the inning. Gators lead 3-2.
BOTTOM 4 - Ramjit drops a bunt up the third base line. Probably not a bad idea to challenge the USC third baseman. Iskenderian is late getting there. Belcher tries to make the play but the runner is safe by a step and a half. Tobias pops out to center. English has to go back a step or two but makes the play. The smattering of fans in attendance thought that might carry out. Maybe if this game was on a softball field. One down. Hit and run ... Bader hits it through the left side right where Pankake should have been. He hadn't moved much but his momentum was taking him toward the bag. He lost his footing as he tried to go towards the hole. His feet seemed to be in cement. Runners on the corners with one down. Runner takes off from first. Greiner clutches and then tries to throw the runner out at second. Throw tails high and to the right off of Vergy's glove and into shallow center. Runner at third scores. Belcher fields a sharp ground ball back to him and throws to first for the out. Then catches a soft liner back at him. Gators lead 3-2
TOP 4 - Greiner pops the first pitch of the inning up the chute. Caught by the shortstop. Celek lines a single back up the middle but is cut down at second on a ground ball by Iskenderian to second base. Georgie beats the throw to first so no double play. English bounces to third base. He's out at first. Score tied 2-2.
BOTTOM 3 - Jonathan Crawford has an 85 mph changeup. Nolan Belcher has an 85 mph fastball. Belcher's fastball gets Turgeon swinging to begin the inning. Came back from down in the count 2-1. Pankake fields a hopper to towards the hole. He throws a one-hop bullet to Dantzler. It handcuffs him a bit but he's able to glove it and stay on the bag for the out. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that throw. Two down. Dantzler snares a pop up to end the inning. Score tied 2-2.
TOP 3 - Tanner English is hit and takes his base. Saiko goes ahead in the count 3-0 and then takes a mammoth swing at a 3-1 pitch. Little bit of a jam job and it flares to shallow left for a single. Two on, no outs and O'Sullivan will come to the mound. Vergy bunts the runners up. Crawford throwing a steady diet of sliders to Pankake to go ahead 2-2 in the count. Set him up perfectly for the heat. Two down. Dantzler up and hops out of the way of a low, inside pitch. The ball gets past the catcher and English scores. O'Sullivan out to talk to the umpire claiming it hit Dantzler. It didn't good call by Blue. Dantzler then lines a single to right field to bring home Saiko and this game is tied up. Bright strikes out on a high fastball to end the inning. Score tied 2-2
BOTTOM 2 - Shafer hits a bullet to left off of Belcher to begin the inning. Drops in for a single. Ramjit drops a soft single to center. English can't quite get there. Runners on first and second with no one out for Tobias, who has really struggled this year. He gets down low showing bunt but pulls back looking to hit. Tobias drops a bunt on the next pitch. Iskenderian was there and is able to set his feet and throw with plenty of time. But he throws high and way off the mark. It goes into foul territory and all runners move up a base. Runner in, runner on second and third. Bader pops up in foul territory near the Florida dugout. Isky doesn't have a clue. Not even close. Gives Bader another chance but he taps back to the mound. Belcher looks back the runner and throws to first for the out. Fahrman lines a single to right. Brings in another run. Runners on the corners. Dent looking for a safety squeeze. Pops up two foul but neither can be caught. He eventually pops up to Dantzler at first for the out. Two down. Martin lines out to Dantzler at first to end the inning. Gators lead 2-0
TOP 2 - Fastball is coming out of Crawford's hand pretty good tonight. He seems to be spotting it up very well at 95 mph from my angle up here. Dantzler pops out to center for the first out of the inning. Bright hits a line drive single to right field. The surprise in that is it was to right, not that it was a line drive. One on, one out. Greiner up and hits a high drive to deep left. Bader puts his hand against the wall and settles underneath it on the track. Two down. Celek draws a walk. Golly bums, it's fun watching a hitter so locked in. Iskenderian bounces into a U6 fielders choice to end the inning. No score.
BOTTOM 1 - Nolan Belcher out to the mound. He moves up a day in the rotation. Martin reminds me of the Gamecocks -- first pitch swinging. He pops up to center. English hardly has to move. One down. Turgeon behind in the count 2-2 and fouls off a pitch. He pops up behind the third base bag in foul territory. Iskenderian had some troubles with those plays in the fall and preseason. He was a high school shortstop and not quite used to that angle. He fights it, but makes the play. Two down. Belcher gets Gushue swinging on a breaking ball to end the inning. No score.
TOP 1 - Jonathan Crawford entered as one of the best pitchers in the SEC this season but he's failed to live up to the hype. He's only just a few good games this year but he starts off strong getting Saiko on strikes with a 94 mph fastball spotted low, away, and on the black. Great pitch there. Chase Vergason up. He tries to bunt on the first pitch to challenge Tobias, who is a little iffy defensively. Vergason isn't that fast but he drops a good bunt. Tobias also makes a nice play to get him by a step. Not really a strong throw, but got rid of it quickly and accurately. Two down. Pankake up and ahead in the count 2-1. After taking a fastball strike, he lines out to center to end the inning. No score.
For those who haven't seen this place before, there's always a lot of blue on the field and a lot of empty seats in the stands. It's 326 down the left field line, 404 to center, and 321 down the right field line. The allys aren't marked. The South Carolina bullpen is in right center. The Florida bullpen is up the left field line and it's obstructed. We can't really see what happens in there. Jonathan Crawford is toeing the rubber and Graham Saiko is digging in. We're about to get underway.
Hey folks - Sorry I'm running late today. Per USC, Tyler Webb is not available for the game tonight. He has some arm soreness and is day-to-day. He'll be re-evaluated tomorrow.
