Pankake watches the runner, not the coach in that situation. He's going to third if the runner is going home. Holbrook doesn't stop the runner heading for home untl he sees the ball in the OF glove. It's a hard spot to be in.

thanks. figured since Vergason was putting on brakes after his turn. definitely tough for pankake to be aggressive on 1st to 3rd.

Exactly...esp. with less than 2 outs CH esp. wants to be sure. Ball was hit moderately sharp & not real deep...like you said, gotta be sure he gloves it cleanly. This hasn't been an issue the previous 2 years w/CH. These younger players while no doubt talented, are, as Tommy Moody said, letting their instincts take over. Classic table-setters like Whit Merrifield seem to come in w/good base running savvy. Guys that are use to clearing the table, like a Joey Pankake, sometimes have to learn the hard way!!

holbrook is not responsible for the trailing runners - just the lead guy. it's up to pankake to read the play and the runner ahead of him. in that situation the third run is the important one - pankake should have done everything to protect the third run. it was his blunder, not holbrooks.
