  • BOTTOM 9 - Tyler Webb back out there looking to close this game. He immediately goes ahead on Pohl 0-2. Goes to 2-2 and Pohl goes down swinging at a fastball strike. Webb leaves a flat fastball up a little bit and it's lined back up the middle for a single. Clemson can tie it in one swing now. Webb goes ahead of McGibbon 0-2 in the count. He tries to hold back on a 1-2 curve ball but he's adjudged to have gone around. One out away. Baum takes second base. Indifference. Kieboom then singles him home to cut it to 4-3. It's up to Felder to keep it going for the Tigers. Felder hit the home run yesterday against Price. Felder is first pitch swinging and gets a good piece of the offering from Webb. It went to right center and Matthews camps under it for the final out. FINAL: Carolina 4 - Clemson 3. W: Montgomery (5-1) The Gamecocks (43-17) host the winner of the Charlottesville Regional. Dates/times announced Monday.

TOP 9 - Dante Roseberg misses a double just foul down the third base line. Holbrook chats with the umpire that called it foul. No better view than Blue's, but that was darn close. Rosy eventually pops out to right. One down. Pankake flies out to left. Two down. Marzilli pops out to center. Gamecocks lead 4-2.

BOTTOM 8 - Webb back out there looking to get through the top of the order. Wilkerson pops out to short and Brittle Ks. This is where you want to face Shaffer - in a position where he can't tie you or take the lead. Webb goes ahead in the count 1-2 on a sweet little change. Shaffer works the count back full and then goes down looking on a fastball on the outside corner. Shaffer unhappy but pitch far too close, especially the way Blue has called this game, to watch go by. Shaffer still barking at the umpire as he goes to third base. Gamecocks lead 4-2.

TOP 8 - Bright hits one on the screws, but right at McGibbon at first base. English drops a soft single to left field. I think he'll be stealing here. That's 21 multi-hit games this season for English, which leads the team. He moves to second on a hit-and-run ground out by Vergason. I mean, I say hit and run. English was trying to steal the whole at-bat. Vergason just happened to swing. English is caught trying to swipe third base. Probably not wise. Gamecocks lead 4-2.

BOTTOM 7 - Montgomery gets the first two outs pretty quickly. McGibbon popped up to second and Kieboom grounded out to short. Pankake with a backhand play to get the out. After giving up a single to Felder, Montgomery is lifted in favor of Webb, who gets a ground ball out from nine-hole hitter Stolz to Pankake. Gamecocks lead 4-2. Six outs remaining.

TOP 7 - Marzilli pops up to Wilkerson to begin the inning. Walker then pops up to Wilkerson. Two quick outs for Meyer, who will take every quick out he can get. Mini-shift on Dantzler again. If they'd play him straight up, he would have grounded out to second to end the inning. Instead, ball gets through up the middle for a single. Matthews with a check swing bouncer to first base. McGibbon fields and steps on the bag for the final out of the inning. Gamecocks lead 4-2.

BOTTOM 6 - Stolz hits a soft liner to left. Not the best jumps there by English, but he catches up to it for the first out of the inning. Top of the order due up now for Clemson. Wilkerson's soft liner is just a little bit softer and falls in to left field. Single, which ends a streak of 12 straight retired. Brittle then doubles down the right field line to score the first Clemson run of the game. Jack Leggett standing beside Jordan Montgomery backing up the play. Interesting spot to stand back behind home plate. Shaffer hits a bouncer to short, which gets by Pankake. Ruled a "bad hop single" giving Clemson runners at the corners with one down. Pohl grounds out 5-3 to score a run. Only play is at first. Two down with a runner on second base. Monty goes ahead in the count 0-2 on a beautiful curve ball to Baum. He hasn't thrown many of those this game, but he throws a good one there. Baum goes down swinging at a changeup in the dirt. Gah, when Montgomery can throw the curve and the change for strikes as well as locate his fastball, he's good. I mean, I guess that goes for most. Hard to do all three on one day, but still. Gamecocks lead 4-2

TOP 6 - Bright up and goes down swinging on four pitches. Two straight Ks after bouncing a double off the wall. English with a bouncer to left field over the head of Shaffer. He's going for second all the way and slides in safely. The throw from Baum is wild and goes all the way to the fence near the USC dugout. It takes English a while to recognize it, but he makes it to third. He stands there with one out and Vergason up. He lines a breaking ball through the right side to score another. Rosenberg bunts Vergason to second to bring up Joey Pankake. He goes down swinging at a slider in the dirt. Nice pitch there by Meyer. Gamecocks lead 4-0

BOTTOM 5 - Another bouncer back up the middle. Montgomery fields this one cleanly and gets McGibbon headed to first base. One down. Kieboom hits a slicing liner ticketed for right field. Vergason reacts quickly, two steps and a dive and snares it in the webbing of his glove for the out. Nice play there, Vergy. Nice play. Two down. Montgomery up 1-2 in the count to Felder. Routine play by Vergason on a two-hopper ends the inning. Gamecocks still lead 3-0.

TOP 5 - Gamecocks have the top of the order coming up. Pankake lines out to left to start the inning, but Evan Marzilli singles to put one on with one out. Christian Walker up and has a check swing strike called. Hit-and-run attempt with Walker, who sends a pop fly to right. Felder camps under it, but drops it. Marzilli was scrambling back towards first. No way he can reverse course and make it to second. He's thrown out 9-4-6 for the second out of the inning. Walker on first, then moves to second when Dantzler walks. Two on for Matthews with two outs. Matthews barrels up a fastball but it's right at Brittle in center, who makes the catch. Gamecocks lead 3-0.

BOTTOM 4 - Montgomery goes ahead 0-2 on Shaffer with a straight change and fastball for two swinging strikes. Shaffer, however, works the count back full. Montgomery gives the change and Shaffer goes fishing for it. Great pitch by Monty. So hard to see that from him. One down. Vergy makes a nice play in front of the bag on a bouncer from Pohl, who isn't exactly fleet of foot. Baum hits one on the screws, which is about the first of the day for Clemson, but it's right at English. Gamecocks lead 4-0.

TOP 4 - Quick inning for Jonathan Meyer. Tanner English with a flare to center. Brittle makes a nice sliding catch for the first out. Vergason hits a bouncer to second. Easy play there for Wilkerson. Rosenberg Ks to end the inning. Gamecocks lead 3-0.

BOTTOM 3 - Three up, three down for Montgomery. Stolz and Wilkerson both ground out to third base. Brittle goes down looking again. Someone tell him to swing at something sometime. That being said, strike three wasn't overly close. This blue has a big zone for both teams. Just something to remember later. Gamecocks lead 3-0.

TOP 3 - Dantzler singles to lead off the inning, but he's cut down quickly as Matthews grounds into a 6-4-3 double play. Connor Bright up. He strikes out on three pitches to end the inning. Quick one there for Meyer. Gamecocks lead 3-0.

BOTTOM 2 - Pohl goes down swinging on an offspeed pitch in the dirt. Rosenberg throws to first for the out. One down. Monty has lost his control for a minute walking five-hole hitter Baum and falls behind 2-0 on McGibbon. Second pitch was borderline, but perhaps a little low. McGibbon shoots an offering from Montgomery the opposite way and just inside the third base bag. Goes for a double and gives the Tigers two runners in scoring position with one down for Spencer Kieboom. He pops up on the infield to Dantzler. That one doesn't have the distance to get the run in. Two outs. Montgomery freezes Felder on a 1-2 pitch. Fastball low and outside. Hit his spot. Rosenberg didn't move. Gamecocks 3 - Clemson 0.

TOP 2 - Leadoff single by Vergason to right field. Put some barrel on it and dropped it in there. Rosenberg up and bunts him to second base. Pankake walks to put two on. Both runners move up on a slow roller to second by Marzilli. Walker up and gets underneath an offering from Jonathan Meyer. Flies out to left field to end the inning. Still 3-0 Gamecocks.

BOTTOM 1 - Jordan Montgomery with the biggest start of his career. Wilkerson is first pitch swinging and hits a sharp bouncer back up the middle. Montgomery gets a glove on it and it deflects towards second base. Vergason reverses course and makes the play. Brittle Ks on a pitch that he didn't swing at until it was already past him. Shaffer hits a bouncer back up the middle and it, too, deflects off Monty's mitt. This one deflects to Pankake, who would have had no shot. Makes the play. Gamecocks lead 3-0.

TOP 1 - I would have gone with Patrick Andrews if I was Clemson. Haselden ain't that great and I think his results against South Carolina have been mixed, if memory serves. I told scribes up here that before the game. Anyway, Joey Pankake up and drives one off the top of the wall in left field. Think Tanner is going to want to move the fences in a foot? Leadoff triple. Marzilli sends a fly ball to medium depth in left. Baum settles under it, hits his cutoff man, who throws home. Ball beats Pankake, but Blue rules he gets under the tag. I've watched it about three times now and I can't tell. What I do know is Blue was mid-punch calling him out but changed the call to safe. Leggett displeased and comes out to argue. No avail, obviously. Walker walks on five pitches. Dantzler up and hits a sharp grounder to first. McGibbon steps on first and throws to second. Ball hits off Walker and into shallow left. Walker takes third and comes home on an RBI single by Adam Matthews. Bright then comes up and gets some good backspin on the baseball. Deep fly ball to left field off the wall for an RBI double. Guys are absolutely tattooing Haselden. That'll end the day for him after giving up 3 ER on 3 H and a BB. Jonathan Meyer entering to face Tanner English. He hits a squibber to second base. Almost beats it out. Nice little start there for the Gamecocks. Gamecocks lead 3-0

3:45 p.m. - Clemson will start David Haselden, who pitched four innings of relief on Friday night. Threw 62 pitches.

South Carolina and Clemson, Part II, forthcoming at 4:34 p.m. The Tigers knocked of Coastal Carolina 5-3 in the Noon game. We know that Jordan Montgomery will go for the Gamecocks. We don't know anything yet about the Tigers. I'll give you something as soon as I know it.

What we do know is Carolina is the visitors today sitting in the third base dugout. They're wearing the yankee greys with black caps. We also know that if Clemson wins tonight, the Tigers will also be the home team tomorrow by virtue of a coin flip.

Sounds desperate to me. What quality pitchers does Jacklegg have left?

  • Thanks to their rain delay and the extra innings, Clemson had already burned four starters (including Haselden) before today's game. Leone is obviously done after 127 pitches against Coastal.

They have only one player left who has started more than a single game - Jonathan Meyer. He has six starts, posting a 4.39 ERA and record of 2-5. Their best reliever was lost for the year a couple weeks back, and the best remaining guy threw 28 pitches to close out Coastal.

Unless Haselden bounces back strong, they are going to need bubble gum and duct tape to hold the staff together for 9 innings today.

  • I think it's complete BS that we are 2-0, hosting as a national seed and could potentially be the away team for 2 games.

I think it's complete we have to beat our archival 2x to advance. I hope this never happens again. The damn tournament is nerve wracking enough.

I have no problem being the visitor tonight. I understand that rule. The BS part of the rule for me is that we are visitors in the winner-take-all game via a coin toss. We are the home team and have earned the right to be the home team in the final game.

Well, hopefully we wont have to worry about being visitors tom night with a win this afternoon. I am ready for some Carolina baseball.

I've never understood the rule. The higher seed should be the home team every time. Flip a coin only if you are equal seeds in Supers or Omaha, and give precedence to national seeds.

Yeah, the clemmers want jackleg fired for not putting Brady in there.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable rationale for firing a coach to me.

  • Right Espn, the plate was extended on felders at bat. Of course that's the reason he struck out. Not because of good pitching...

    swayinandplayin

  • Wow, this 9 hitter had 2 HR vs Coastal today. Thats impressive, have we got 2 bombs from our 9 hole hitters all year?
