Live updates from Carolina Stadium (CANCELED)

  • 10:25 p.m. - Tonight's baseball game against USC Upstate has been canceled. It will not be made up. USC hosts LSU on Thursday at 7 p.m.

10:20 p.m. - The rain has started again out here. The game isn't starting anytime soon. There's no drop dead time in which the game has to restart. I think we're going to be waiting around a while.

9:15 p.m. - The projected time to resume the baseball game is 10:30 p.m. It is still raining at Carolina Stadium.

9 p.m. - No decision yet on what is going to happen. The coaches are chatting right now. The rain has stopped but there is still lightning in the area. Every time a lightning strike hits, we're 30 minutes away.

8:30 p.m. - There's nothing concrete to report as far as start time or anything like that. The rain has slowed almost to a stop. This field drains very, very well. No puddles anywhere in the grass and very few on the dirt. It shouldn't take this place long to get ready once everything is good to go. There was a lightning strike just a few minutes ago and the minimum wait resets to 30 minutes every time there is a strike of lightning.

Weather Delay: After the top of the second inning, we went into a weather delay. It's raining pretty good right now. Will probably be a while before we get going again.

TOP 2 - Nine-hole hitter Brody Greer just pushed a bunt to first base. He burned it down the line and beat Belcher to the bag. Lead off single. Stampler grounds through the right side and all of a sudden there are two on with no one out. Bumgardner sacrifices the runners up. Perfect bunt. I thought he beat it out. Was certainly close. Belcher goes ahead in the count 0-2 to Liput, who is hitting .322 with two bombs this year. Belcher bounces his next pitch in the right-handed batters box and Greiner gets over there and blocks it. Saved a run. Make that two straight times that has happened. Belch making his catcher work hard. He freezes Liput with an outside fastball for the second out of the inning. Belcher strands the pair in scoring position getting Weber swinging on a slow curve. USC Upstate leads 3-0.

BOTTOM 1 - Joey Pankake watches strike three go by. Evan Marzilli with a second-pitch, two-hopper to first base for the second out of the inning. Christian Walker hits one right on the screws, but it's right at Guers in left, who started out just a couple steps shy of the track. Upstate leads 3-0

TOP 1 - Colby Holmes taking the hill for the first time since April 22 against Auburn. Want to look and see what his velocity and command is like as this is supposed to be like a midweek bullpen for him. He'll go one, maybe two innings tonight. Holmes comes out of the gate giving up a bloop single down the right field line to Stampler. Bumgardner lines out to right, but that's when Holmes starts to lose it a little bit. He hits Liput with his first pitch of the at-bat and then gives up a sharp single back up the middle to Weber to score Stampler. Marzilli's throw looks weak and is way up the third base line. Greiner can't get over to it and the runners advance to second and third as the ball goes to the screen. Guers hits a sac fly to right field. Matthews got in a great throw, but he had no chance given the depth. Ray Tanner comes out to the mound to chat with Holmes. Ray rarely makes the move. When he comes out, he usually comes to give a little pep talk. Cook singles back up the middle. It wouldn't have mattered, but it seems like a ball that Pankake should have at least knocked down. He was a good two feet away from getting a glove on it. It wasn't hit that hard and was well to his side of the bag. It would have still been a hit and the run would have still scored, but it's a ball I expect to stay on the infield. After that, Jerry Meyers comes out to call in Nolan Belcher. Obviously, my info on Seddon being the first out of the bullpen was not accurate. Something much have changed since earlier this afternoon. Belcher was warming from the time the game started and Seddon hasn't picked up a ball yet. Second pitch that Belcher throws is lined back up the middle for a single to put runners on first and second with two down. Belcher gives up a line drive down the left field line. Freshman Tanner English makes one heck of a sliding catch to keep a double and two more runs off the board. USC Upstate leads 3-0

6:45 p.m. - Tonight's game will start on time at 7:06 p.m. and is still set to be broadcast on SportsSouth.

It's been raining pretty good out here late this afternoon but the tarp is about to come off the field. There's still a light drizzle going on and fans have not been let into the stadium yet. That said, we've got to be getting close to time to getting started. No delay has been announced.

Colby Holmes will start on the mound and go one or two innings. Joel Seddon will be the first out of the bullpen, based on what I was told earlier today. I also expect Nolan Belcher and Adam Westmoreland to get some time. I don't expect Forrest Koumas to pitch. He'll start Friday, I'm told

  • Whittle, have I missed something...why no Roth Friday? Simply bc Forrest didn't throw Sunday?

    howardscock1

  • Roth I assume will be pitching Thursday since it's the 1st game of the L.S.U. series

    gamecockbrad

  • Ah, didn't realize it started Thursday...thanks.

  • man we look sluggish early.

  • Uh...so...what are we supposed to make of that Colby? Not what Tanner had hoped for I'm sure.

Not sure what to make of him. His velocity was OK, his location was not. It was more about him getting out there and throwing some pitches more than anything else, but wanted to see more success than that.

Yes but I'm more concerned with what that means for Saturday. Was he feeling ok? Confidence issues after that?

  • Seeing him warm up, I mentioned to my wife that he didn't appear to be throwing hard at all and looked like he didn't feel well. Hope he's ok.

I'm not worried about confidence. I don't know how he feels. We'll ask after the game.

  • Not real good effort so far. And the umpiring has been questionable. I believe that bunter from upstate was safe on the lollygag throw by belcher. Home plate was giving an extra 2-3 inches on each side of the plate. Of course our pitchers cant take advantage of it.

    Kyle4usc

  • Life, upstate is far from a cupcake. They have a solid team, but that said we arent real focused right now.

Belcher definitely big leagued that throw on the bunt. Hate seeing that stuff.

  • From the looks of game so far, I think we better hope for a rainout. Don't care how good Upstate might be, looks like we have lots to lose and little to gain with this crowd.

  • Two games in a row I'm reading about a weak throw from Marzilli. What's with that?

I think it was weak because he came up thinking they'd hold the runner. Looked surprised they were sending him. It was the aggressive play to send him rather than load the bases with 1 out. If he'd come up gunning he could have gotten him.

Wasn't a weak throw, off target.

In my opinion, it was a weak throw, but my guess is he didn't get a good grip on the ball given that the grass is wet. Rarely does he have a weak throw. Others said he had a weak throw against Georgia. I, however, did not.
