Live updates from Carolina Stadium (FINAL)

  • TOP 9 - Patrick Sullivan to the mound. He strikes out Yoandry Galan for the first out of the inning. Haven't seen many slower bats at this level than that right there on those swings. Tanner English apparently catches a fly ball to had to be at least semi-deep left field. I can't see anything out there. Two down. Single and an E9 advances the runner to second base. Wild pitch moves the runner to third with two down. Can we just get this over with, please? Sullivan Ks him on a full count pitch to end the game. FINAL: Carolina 7 - Manhattan 0. W: Holmes (7-1). The Gamecocks (41-17) will play Clemson at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.

BOTTOM 8 - New pitcher, LHP Nick Girardi, into the game. First pitch he throws is lined just inside the left field foul pole for Walker's 11th home run of the season. Dantzler walks and Connor Bright will pinch hit for Roth. Bright bunts Dantzler to second base. Matthews comes up and knocks an RBI single back up the middle. English flies to the track but Vergason drops a double to left center to score another run. Gamecocks pouring it on here late in the game ... Pankake up with a 1-2 count and two outs and the game is in a weather delay. Must be lightning in the area ..... Pankake walks, but Marzilli bounces back to the mound to end the inning. Gamecocks lead 7-0

TOP 8 - Holmes gets Slattery to fly out and McClennan to ground out. Holmes gives up a single through the left side, a line drive, which is Manhattan's first hit of the game. Heck of a start by Holmes. He strikes out his ninth of the game, Kalousdian, to end the inning. Gamecocks lead 4-0.

BOTTOM 7 - Rosenberg leads off the inning against new RHP Mike Giordano. He knocks one to left center, which is settled under by Vega for the first out of the inning. Pankake strikes out and Marzilli lines out to end the inning. Gamecocks lead 4-0.

TOP 7 - Holmes motoring right along with a pop out to short. Then gets his career high eighth strikeout for the second out of the inning. Cleanup hitter Ramon Ortega lines out to right to end the inning. Gamecocks still on top 4-0.

BOTTOM 6 - A HIT! Joey Pankake drops a double to the gap in left center. Slides in head first into second, which brings up Evan Marzilli, who goes behind in the count 1-2 but works it back to full. He drops a single into right field. Walker hits a spinner off the end of his bat that carries over the first baseman. Ball falls very, very close to the line. It was hard for me to tell what happened, even after a few replays. It looked to me like dirt bounced up. I didn't see any chalk bounce up. It was really, really tough to tell though. Ball is called foul. Walker walks to load the bases with no one out. Dantzler is first pitch swinging and pops up behind the plate for the first out. Michael Roth pinch hitting for Kyle Martin. Just looking for a long fly ball and a sac fly. He strikes out looking. Perfect pitch by Sewitt. Low, outside corner. Adam Matthews digs in and goes ahead in the count 2-0. Count goes to 3-1 and he delivers a two-RBI single through the left side. Barreled that one up and shoots it through to score two. English then comes up and sends a line drive to deep right. Rock gets himself turned around and it hits off his glove and falls. It's ruled a triple. That scores two more. Vergason pops up to end the inning but the Gamecocks lead 4-0 and have to be feeling good about life right now.

TOP 6 - Eight-hole hitter Kalousdian goes down swinging on three pitches for the first out and sixth K of the game for Holmes. Pankake fields a grounder back up the middle and throws across his body for out number two. Vega goes down swinging for the third out of the inning. Make that seven Ks for Holmes now. No score. Gamecocks have the top of the order coming to the plate.

BOTTOM 5 - Matthews bunts right back to the mound. One out. English misses by four feet on a sweeping breaking ball in the wrong batters box. Two down. Chase Vergason works another walk. Good for him. Sewitt scared of the light-hitting second baseman? Rosenberg flies out to right to end the inning. No score through five.

TOP 5 - Two quick outs for Holmes. First pitch swinging by Slattery. Hits it off the end of the bat - dribbler up the first base line. Holmes fields and tags him out. One down. McClennan pops out to Marzlli in center. Holmes hasn't really gotten hit hard yet. The Jaspers are a very light-hitting bunch. Low team batting average and not much power. Holmes freezes Rock with an 90 mph fastball on the outside "corner", which sawed him off at the knees, too. No score.

BOTTOM 4 - Joey Pankake hits a sharp grounder to third to begin the inning. Great pick up over there by McClennan. He throws on to first for the out. That's two pretty nice plays for him over there in this game. Marzilli is hit on the elbow and immediately swipes second base. Walker goes ahead in the count 3-1. He flies out to right field, which is deep enough to get the runner over to third base with two down. Dantzler walks on a full count pitch outside to put runners on the corners with two down. Kyle Martin walking to the plate but is called back by Ray Tanner to chat. He falls behind in the count 1-2. He reaches for a changeup and pops up to first to end the inning. No score.

TOP 4 - Holmes retires the first two quickly. Gets Camastro to line out to Walker at first. He's hardly out of the box before it's caught. Murphy bounces out to third and Ortega Ks to end the inning. That's four strikeouts for Holmes, who has faced one over the minimum due to the HBP. No score.

BOTTOM 3 - Tanner English up and is first pitch swinging. Flies out to the track in left to begin the inning. Ball jumped off the bat pretty well. I can't see left field from my view in the press box, but it carried pretty deep. Interesting how two of the three people who have been here all season long are sitting on the second row of the press box instead of their normal seats. I digress. Vergason walks. Rosenberg grounds into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. No score.

TOP 3 - Holmes deals again in the inning getting the Jaspers in order. Adam Matthews makes a great running catch just in fair territory and crashes into the wall just in front of the berm. Holmes fields a tapper back to him and Vergason fields a Sunday-hopper. Both throw to first for their respective outs. No score.

BOTTOM 2 - LB Dantzler up and works deep into the count. Getting Sewitt's pitch count up is not a priority. Seeing pitches to begin to get the timing and used to the arm angle is important. He lifts a 68 mph offspeed pitch deep to the track in right field on a full count pitch. It's caught on the track for the first out. Martin grounds out to first base U3. Matthews up and takes a ferocious hack at the first pitch and misses. He ends up flying out to right field to end the inning. No score.

TOP 2 - LB Dantzler makes the first two plays of the inning. Charges and picks one. Sits back on the second. Both plays made. Two down. Holmes hits McClennan - grazes his shirt, but still counts - to put one board. First Manhattan runner of the game. Holmes gets Rock swinging to end the inning. No score.

BOTTOM 1 - It could be a long day for Manhattan if Sewitt pitches the rest of the game like he did to Pankake. First pitch a 78 mph fastball belt high that Pankake watches go by a little high and right down the middle. Sewitt isn't close the rest of the AB and he walks on five pitches. Pankake is stealing on the first pitch though and is thrown out at second base. I imagine USC will run as much as they can. Marzilli fans at a 66 mph off speed pitch giving Sewitt two outs. Walker grounds out to third. Going to be beneficial to see some pitches the first time through the order to get timing down. Side-armers are typically easier to hit the second time through the order. No guarantee though. No score.

TOP 1 - Lets see which Colby Holmes shows up today. He falls behind 3-1 in the count to Vega, who is 32-of-35 in SBs this season, but gets him to pop out to Pankake at short for the first out. He Ks Camastro looking and then Murphy swinging to end the inning. He threw a couple of nice changeups that inning. Good start to it for Mr. Holmes. No score.

4:35 p.m. - Clemson has defeated Coastal Carolina 11-3 in a game that seemed to take forever, weather delay or no weather delay.. The Tigers will play at 4 p.m. tomorrow against the winner while Coastal will take on today's loser at Noon. Both games are on ESPNU. South Carolina and Manhattan will begin today at 5:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m., Clemson is leading 10-3 but Coastal has the bases loaded with no one out in the top of the seventh inning. It's going to be impossible to project the start time for South Carolina and Manhattan right now, but what we do know is the USC game will start 50 minutes after the final out is recorded in CU/CCU.

  • Wow........that dumb pick off at second on the fly to right speaks volumes to how Coastal Carolina has looked and played today. They have been VERY poor in all aspects of the game.

  • I'd just like to take another opportunity to thank The Eye Center for sponsoring our game threads this year. They do incredible work and you can see them for all of your eye needs. They're market leaders in Lasik, can get rid of that pesky astigmatism, and really do whatever you need done. Please give them a call or check out their website to see how they can help you. If you're interested in Lasik surgery, you can get $200 off by mentioning either myself or TheBigSpur.com. Bill "Oot Oot" Golding is a patient and you can see what he has to say above. He's pictured below with Dr. Clary.

  • John,

Clemson's pitchers threw quite a few pitches. Where do the two pitchers that threw today rank on Clemson's staff?

Maybe you could recommend them to the umpire that robbed us of that HR a few games ago?

In my opinion, they have about three No. 2/3 starters on their starting staff. Pohle has done fine for them this season. Haselden is one of their veterans, but he hasn't had a great year. Both will be unavailable tomorrow. No huge losses.

  • Question - what happens if a national seed doesn't win the regional? Where is the super regional played?

The two teams who are matching up will bid. It is typically the other Regional host site. For example, if South Carolina loses, N.C. State will probably get the Super, assuming they win their Regional. If they don't get out of their Regional, it's just whoever puts in the best bid.

  • I like how Dante is looking.

And, Colby is being Colby, which is a good thing. I have to go to work in a minute, so ya'll hold it down. Hopefully, the bottom half of this inning will not be over before I have to go.

    GO COCKS!

A minor story. Happened in the locker room. He was accidentally head-butted. Didn't miss any time. Did affect his play. He wore a band-aid for a few days.

Do just what the announcer said and CROWD the plate. Get right on top of it and he has no choice but to come across the plate.....

  • We have hitting issues, this guy doesnt even have great movement on his pitches. We are missing not him missing our bats. Way to be PC about it ray, but this guy is absolute garbage.

    Kyle4usc

  • I meant more for the next game. Even Jamie Moyer puts teams in a funk for the next game or two and he throws 75-80 from a normal delivery.

This joker is at 65 and strange. Doesn't help the outside corner has an extra 6 inches for him to throw whiffle balls at.

  • Both pitchers have combined for a no hitter through 9 combined innings.
