Live updates from Charles Hawkins (FINAL)

  • TOP 9 - Kyle Martin doubles to left center and Rosenberg singles to center to put runners at the corners with no one out. Sullivan, pinch hitting, strikes out. English knocks an infield single to short for an RBI. Matthews with an RBI fielders choice. Grounder to short. Force out at second with Matthews safe at first. Marzilli now up looking for a nine-run home run. Marzilli walks. Pankake hits a routine grounder to short, but it goes right through the wickets of the SS. Matthews comes around to score. Vergason, who entered for defense last inning, coming to the plate. Vergason grounds out to second to end the inning. FINAL: Vandy 12 - Carolina 4. LP: Beal (1-3). USC falls to 19-8, 2-6 and will face Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

BOTTOM 8 - Seddon in to pitch. He gives up a leadoff home run deep over the bleachers in right field. Gets a pop out to third and then line out to center. Strikes out the final hitter of the inning. Vandy leads 12-1

TOP 8 - Walker singles through the left side, but nothing else doing. Marzilli flew out, Pankake and Celek struck out. Vandy up 11-1. Joel Seddon pitching.

BOTTOM 7 - Munson still on the mound and gives up a pair of hits to lead off the inning. Hunter Privette coming in and he gives up an RBI single. Don't see this very often -- 6-3-5 double play. Ground ball to Pankake with runners at second and third. Runner scores, runner thrown out at first. When Pankake throws to first, the runner on second breaks for third. He's cut down. Bases clear, but another run in. Two down. Lineout to right to end the inning. Vandy leads 11-1

TOP 7 - Payne hits an infield single and Greiner ropes a double down the left field line. That'll end the day for Beede, who just had the best start of his young Vanderbilt career. Dantzler has an RBI ground out to spoil the shutout. English bunts right back to the pitcher and Matthews grounds out to short. Vandy leads 9-1 at the stretch.

BOTTOM 6 - Three up, three down for Logan Munson. K, 4-3, 5-3. Still 9-0 Vandy.

TOP 6 - Carolina had just one hit on Beede coming into the inning, but get a pair to start it off. English serves a single to right and Matthews one to left. Marzilli walks to load the bases with no one out. Pitching coach comes out to visit and whatever he says works. Beede gets a bouncer back to him. Force out at home. Walker pops out to the catcher. Celek hits a line drive that one-hops to deep second. It's gloved and Celek, not the fleetest of foot, is thrown out easily at first to leave the bases loaded.

BOTTOM 5 - Sullivan starts out the inning with a strikeout, but then gives up a walk to Harrell to put one on with one down. Reynolds singles through the right side and then takes second base. Lupo and Kemp then knock back-to-back singles, Kemp's of the bunt variety, to make it 9-0 in favor of the 'Dores. Pankake makes a nice play on a ground ball, shuffles it to Payne, who throws high to first. Walker leaps and tags the runner just before he gets to the bag. Heck of an effort there by Pankake and Walker on that play. Vandy leads 9-0

TOP 5 - Nothing doing for the Gamecocks. Payne and Dantzler strike out. Greiner flies out to right. 7-0 Vandy.

BOTTOM 4 - Leadoff double to the LCF gap by Yastrzemski. He moves to third on a productive ground ball out to second base by Gregor. Navin and Conde will have to be the one to bring him in. Jerry Meyers out to visit. Navin hits a chopper over Dantzler. Pankake fields it deep in the hole, but doesn't have a play at any base. RBI single. Beal walks Conde to put two on with one down. Four-pitch walk to Harrell loads the bases, and that'll end the day for Beal, who goes 3.1 IP and throws about 70 pitches. Forrest Koumas entering the game. Reynolds bounces a 2-RBI single through the four hole. Lupo then executes a squeeze play and is safe at first with no one covering the bag. Kemp knocks an RBI single through the right side and all of a sudden, it's 5-0 Vandy. Patrick Sullivan entering to pitch and Koumas is going to see his ERA balloon after that outing. He gives up an RBI bunt single to Gomez. I'd keep bunting until the defense makes a play. Yaz swings away and grounds to Walker. Runner cut down at second, but the relay back is late. Two down. Gregor singles back up the middle to drive in another. Navin bounces out 6-4 to end the inning. Vanderbilt leads 7-0

TOP 4 - Nothing doing for the Gamecocks off of Beede. Pankake goes down on strikes, Walker flew out to center, and Celek grounds out to short. No score.

BOTTOM 3 - Nine-hole hitter Lupo Ks swinging and Kemp flies out to deep right. Two quick outs for the Bealster. Beal then gets a ground ball to Payne at second. Quick inning. No score.

TOP 3 - English pops up to short. One down. Matthews flies out to center. After being hit by a first pitch from Beede, Marzilli is picked off of first base. Quick inning for Beede. No score.

BOTTOM 2 - I don't know if Beal has gotten ahead of a hitter yet in this game. Leadoff single by Nevin to center... Wait. Gets ahead 0-1 to Conde. Navin steals on a 1-1 pitch and is gunned down by a mile by Grayson Greiner. Bases cleared, one down. Conde then serves a single to right. Could have had first and second, no outs, but now just a runner on first and one down. Harrell sees a first pitch ball. Little flare in front of short. Beal, Pankake, and Dantzler -- none can get there. Ball bounces, but Dantzler picks it up and flips it to second for a force out. Two down. He gets Reynolds swinging at a slider to end the inning. No score.

TOP 2 - Brison Celek leads off with an infield single to deep short. He continues to put forth quality at-bats. Payne goes down swinging. He had 3 Ks last night, one already today. Greiner goes down on strikes. He's just seeing a steady diet of off-speed stuff right now. Two down for Dantzler, who swings at the first pitch and hits a nubber to third. Conde makes the play. No score.

BOTTOM 1 - Beal making his first career start. Walks leadoff hitter Tony Kemp, who then steals second. He falls behind Gomez 3-0 but works the count back full. Gomez hits a chopper towards third. Dantzler charges, picks it up on a short hop, and makes a good throw across the diamond. Great play there by the JUCO transfer. Beal kind of ignoring Kemp on second base. Gets a great jump and swipes third. Greiner didn't have much of a chance there. One on, runner on third. Yaz up and up in the count 2-0. Beal works the count full -- third time in three batters that has happened. He gets Yaz swinging at an inside fastball. Really needed that to keep that runner on third base. Tanner out to visit the mound. He gets Harrell swinging to end the inning and strand the runner. No score.

TOP 1 - Tyler Beede takes the bump for the Commodores. He's a low to mid-90s kind of guy on the mound. Definitely a power righty. He comes at Marzilli with five fastballs on six pitches. He gets Marzilli swinging for the first out of the inning. Pankake lines to left and Beeded has two outs on eight pitches. Christian Walker digs in. Hitting .323 this year, which is fourth out of the starters. Quickly falls behind 0-2 fouling a 95mph fastball straight back. Walker goes down swinging on a breaking ball to end the inning. Nice little start there for Beede. Beal headed to the mound. No score.

Absolutely perfect afternoon for baseball in Nashville. Couldn't draw up a nicer day. The wind is blowing in just a bit from center, which is a change from last night. The ball still jumps pretty good in this park though. South Carolina is currently taking batting practice, so we should have lineups in about 20 minutes or so. Keep ya posted on that.

We know that freshmen Evan Beal and Tyler Beede are starting on the bump for their respective teams. Both pitched and played in the Canes Baseball organization and are very familiar with each other. I don't know how close the two were, but I know they were on the same team at times. Beede didn't play each weekend and neither did Beal, so they weren't around each other game in and game out.

  • This is the first time this year that the Gamecocks have used the same lineup twice. That's pretty incredible.

  • Koumas needs to move to mid-week.....he just doesn't have it right now

    uscshoe

  • Putrid. Koumas has seriously regressed this year.

    Kyle4usc

  • got a feeling we don't see Payne after this inning.

we need to win the mid week games...

  • No better options than him right now. I have been perplexed at why we haven't seen more changes but I have cocome to the conclusion that there are no answers. The players on the bench just aren't good enough.
This team is just not very good. We gave up more earned runs in 1 inning today then we did in 5 games in Omaha a year ago. We also have made a pitcher all sec today and our batters wont adjust. And haven't all year.

    Kyle4usc

  • Koumas doesn't need to see the field period. This is absolutely a terrible showing. We don't have any starting pitching outside of Roth.

Also, when Sullivan comes into the game we have conceded.

It's scary to think who will pitch next year without Roth, Webb & Price. The incoming freshmen better be lights out.

I'm not claiming to be an expert and I doubt the others are either. I think the majority of us have been patient to see what develops as far as pitching and it just hasn't. It is time to look at it as it is.

    Jeff4SC

  • Vandy is going to keep bunting until we show we know how to stop it.

I was sick in bed listening but not posting, but my feelings would be the same. Last night despite scoring 8 runs, we left a ton of guys on and struck out way to much. Nothing I said hasn't been truthful, still love em but we aren't a good baseball team. Please try to convince me otherwise.

    Kyle4usc

  • I have a serious question...why does Sullivan continuously get to pitch?

    Jeff4SC

  • seen this all before...usually its in Hoover where we cant field a bunt...no worries. Tell Sully and Munson to take one for the team and get ready for tomorrow.

Exactly my point...so you concede at only 5-0?

    Jeff4SC

  • I have never seen a team fail so miserably with runners on. That was absolutely disgraceful. Bases loaded and nobody out and can't score.

Not only that BUT the pitches they swing at. Tomorrow is a huge game in this season so far.
