Notes on catcher ....

  • I'm told that it's very unlikely that Grayson Greiner will be able to catch next weekend. He could be in uniform and he could be available to hit if all goes well. Being a catcher, it would be too much strain on his knee to squat down pitch after pitch. He had successful surgery this morning at 7 a.m. He will need to work hard to rehab and he'll have to have things go his way in order to play next weekend, but it's not out of the question that he could hit.

Erik Payne is the backup catcher. Patrick Harrington still can not throw.

When was the last time Payne was behind the dish? It could be important this weekend if heaven fordbid DR has an injury or we have to play four or five games in three days.

  • We have Rosey, who is a very, very capable defensive catcher. I am sure the plan is for Erik to never don the gear.

I cannot remember him catching at USC. I hope it does not come to that.

  • At least Tanner knows the situation in advance so Payne can get some very important practice reps behind the dish.

Would Greiner be ready to catch WHEN we make the College World Series or would he still be relegated to just being the DH?

    Too far away to know.
