Offense still lacking

  • I'm thankful for what our pitching has done up to this point, but we need more production out of the offense. Almost every game we play is a struggle. Why are we having issues putting teams like Chas. Southern away? Offensively, we have lacked the past couple of years. Even though we won two national championships we did that with pitching and defense. Now, supposedly, this team is more talented, but it's still having trouble scoring runs consistently. Are we going to blow everybody out? No. But, a few easy games every so often would be nice. We had better hope that we continue to win the majority of our close games because it looks like it's going to be another year where we're going to be involved in a lot of them. I continue to be less than thrilled with our lack of offense. I have no problems with the pitching. We should not be barely squeaking by teams like VMI, Princeton, Chas. Southern, etc....They do not have anywhere near the pitching we're going to be seeing in SEC play. Sorry, but I expect more.

Offense is down in college baseball all around the country. If you play quality teams (I know you won't believe it but we have) then runs are going to be tough to come by. Just go to D1 Baseball and check out some of the scores of the better teams.

We would all like to score a few more runs. But I think we all just have to accept the fact that when the NCAA made the changes to the bats they did it so run production would go down. And it has.

We probably should not be taking a game agains Charleston Southern to the 9th inning. But it happens. We get everyones best shot. You will see it tonight against App St. Going to be a tough game.

Princeton, Elon, clemson are all quality teams. They have some decent pitching. Good pitching against these bats will slow you down. There have been a few balls that have really been hit solid by both teams in some of the games I have watched and the ball will just not jump right now. Cooler weather does that.

I still believe some of the younger guys are going to come around. When they do the offense will pick up. But as long as we have the pitching staff we have at South Carolina right now I think we will be alright.

    So????

    Blitzer

  • How many teams can win nearly every game they score 2 or more runs? Our staff will help buy our hitters time to mature?

    MCR

  • I agree it is struggling now.

Why do you continue to complain about the offense the last two years? Using those teams as examples of disappointing offense starts to take away from your original point (which was valid) and it is just a useless argument. We won the damn national championship 2 years in a row.

All that said, we don't care what you expect. If you expect more than two natty's in a row, we've got nothing for you as a program. Need to follow the Globetrotters. Thy never lose.

  • In the last 2 games we have had 2 and 3 strike outs which shows improvement. I think the runs will come.

  • Just a question.

What is the current won loss record......I know it is strange but I always look at that first for some reason.

And Postal has it right....some bats are clearly not popping in the colder weather....other schools are talking about it.

That you are still worried and down on us gives me a good feeling. Don't ever change.

Andy likes to win with style. He was really disappointed with the 11-2 football season too because our margin of victory wasn't nearly as wide as it could have been. Sorry, he just expects more.

For each of the past two seasons, Andy has picked out something that's going to eventually kill our chances at a special season, only to be proven wrong time and time again. He has zero perspective and is a top-10 all-time worst poster, IMO.

The real issue with Andy isn't with his ability to recognize issues. Yeah, we're definitely struggling to score runs and put away mediocre teams. Anybody with a pulse can recognize that. Andy's problem is that even after one of the best two-year runs in the history of college baseball he still doesn't have faith in the coaches and players.

I actually feel sorry for Andy because of his pessimissm bias. While he's whining about runs or defense or pitching or the length of the outfield grass, the rest of us have been enjoying the best moment in the history of Gamecock athletics. Poor guy.

    Interesting, thanks for the numbers.

Andy, your reply? Kidding, we all know what you're going to say. You probably won't even read the first stat...you know the most useful one.

Have to examine the level of competition imo. You can't just say 15 games and examine the stats like it's all even.

Wonder if rainmaker can give us the average opponents rpi...Haha, jk rainmaker

Sort of like Kentucky's 18-0 record - best team in baseball ... W - L record can be misleading considering who they've played.

    johnhunt

  • The only really troubling stat there are the strikeout numbers. We gotta start putting the ball in play. Make the other team have to play baseball. And not that I'm agreeing with Andy, but our competition hasn't been good (outside of App and if you consider Clemson good) and we're K'ing a lot. UF, uga, and Vandy all have better arms then what we've faced thus far.

    EastTnGamecock4361

  • I think we will be fine. Christian Walker is batting over .500 with men on, and Marzilli is now batting close to .300 with men on. We are young and just beginning to find our stride.
