Regarding drafted players signing

  • JJ Cooper ‏@jjcoop36

Only 9 players in the Top 10 rounds failed to sign. One of them, Preston Tucker, is still eligible to sign as a senior.

  • This seems relevant:

Only six first-round picks signed for more than slot: Gausman, Giolito and Shaffer, along with Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora ($3.9 million for sixth), Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager ($2.35 million for 18th) and Boston shortstop Deven Marrero ($2.05 million for 24th). Ten first-round selections signed exactly at slot and 14 signed below.

I'd guess they had already discussed terms with the team prior to the draft.

  • Most of the talking heads said this draft was below average. Im guessing that factored into so many signing at or below slot.

What's everyones opinion on Appel? The Stros offered him 5 million to go first and he declined then dropped to Pitts and turned down 3.8. To big an injury risk for me to turn down that money then re-enter next year.

  • I remember when Bobby Cox said about Josh Fields that somebody who turns down that much money to play ball must not really want to play ball.

I think he already has very little to worry about financially.

I'm surprised he didn't sign but his agent has been doing this a long time and somehow it seems to turn out positive for the player.
