  • I understand you must pitch like it's your last game, but I really wished we could have saved Roth for DJ Baxendale Thursday night.

    In Ray we trust.

Agree. Monty should be able to beat Kent then we would have had Roth and Holmes set vs Arky.

Maybe Ray does not think that a team in the final 5 of college baseball is a pushover.

You have to win this game or there is no game against Ark.

  • I understand this move. Regardless of your starter, every game you win and move on, your chances to win it all improve. Losing against Kent State with Roth on the bench isn't a chance you can take.

I know they're not a push over but a Saturday starter in the SEC should be able to beat a #3 from Kent St. He is going to have to pitch eventually (hopefully) and that would save Roth and Holmes vs Arky. I want a chance to win it all and if we lose before the championship round it doesn't matter to me when it is.

This you can't question anything Ray does stuff is crazy. Its a message board with broad opinions on different parts of the game. Doesn't mean I don't love Tanner or USC just means I would go another route with the rotation. Monty, Koumas and Belcher are going to have to pitch if we advance so it might as well be vs Kent St in my opinion.

I get the move but if Monty has to pitch to play for the Championship I just think you start him vs Kent. Its been a great year and im not going to think less of this team if we lose to Kent or one of the next two games vs Arky. If we get through this bracket anything can happen and in my opinion Roth and Holmes have good shots to beat Arky as well as Monty Kent.

You can question him. I just don't know how smart that makes someone look who questions the two time defending national champion coach who won 22 post season games in a row, and has made the final 16 12 years in a row. You see the logic there?

If we lost to Kent st, and started Monty, every person on this board would be questioning Tanner for that. It is very easy to make "decisions" when there is nothing riding on it. as is the case for us fans.

Holmes did not have much for Arky the other night.

  • This is a "no-brainer". You HAVE to go with your best shot to win EACH game. Win with Roth today, then figure who is the best available tonight. If fortunate enough to win then, figure out who is best on Friday. Tanner would be crucified if he were to start Monty at noon and we lose thus Roth never got the chance to pitch again.

I havent looked at the actual numbers, but I wouldnt be surprised to find that Kent St has a better offense than Ark

I know two people who would not question a Montgomery start vs Kent State, even if we lose.

I wouldn't, because I understand that you use your best pitcher against your best opponent.
You wouldn't, because you do not believe anyone should question any decision by our coach. In your world, starting Roth or Montgomery, or even Dante Rosenberg, on the mound is the correct decision, as long as the decision was made by our coach.

And yes, if Tanner wanted Walker to play LF, Roth to catch and English to pitch I'd trust in him. He has earned complete and total unconditional support from our fan base in my eyes. He is beyond question by anyone with less knowledge and/or baseball accomplishments than his.

Pretty sure everyone on this board falls in that category.

    But that's just my .2

Pretty sure your assessment of "everyone" is inaccurate. By your logic, assuming you have never been a head coach of a college sports team, every decision by every coach in every sport is always correct. Not only that, but every decision by every politician and business leader outside your own area of expertise is also correct. Everyone's perfect!

Wow, not even close. I said Tanner is beyond question because he's EARNED it, not all coaches/leaders/etc.

He has earned that right in my eyes because, as I said, he is the "2-time defending National Champion greatest in our school's history" coach.

And by "everyone on this board," I stand behind the assessment that no one on this board has accomplished what he has in baseball. Therefore, to me, none of us should question the man that is the greatest we've ever had in any sport.

Question Brad Scott? Hell yeah, he sucked.
    Question Horn? Yep, see above.
Question Hymen? Sure, he's made some mistakes

Question Tanner? Not me. He's EARNED my unconditional support through his continued stellar performance.

    But again, that's just me.

Hense, you are sitting at home, jabberjawing on a message board, while Tanner is in Omaha trying to win our third straight national Championship.

Yep. Didn't realize you were part of the we can't discus any strategy a coach uses on a message board crowd. Roth pitched great like we knew he would but I don't buy into Kent St was a great offensive club. They scored 2 earned runs in Omaha and I think Monty would have beaten their #3 guy too. Their hitters piled up stats in a weak conference. Weak enough they won it by 5 games.

  • Funny thing is the SAME ones on here questioning the Roth start today are the EXACT same ones who would be blasting Tanner had he gone with Jordan and we lost 8-6 and were on our way home. Some folks you cannot win with so why bother trying.

Go through my posts and please show me where I've ever bashed Tanner or one of our players. Sorry baseball strategies should be open for discussion on a message board. Tanner knows the team better than us but I thought Monty would have beaten Kent St to today. Granted I dont think he goes 9 and saves the pen but it would have been nice to have the best post season pitcher ever going against the Hawgs tonight. Also his decision to start Roth really should not be judged until Monty goes vs Arky. Roth did what he was expected to IMO.
